Mobile Suit Gundam: Reconguista in G

Mobile Suit Gundam: Reconguista in G (ガンダム Gのレコンギスタ, Gandamu G no Rekongisuta) was a 2014 television anime series produced by Sunrise and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of the original Mobile Suit Gundam. The series aired in Japan from 2 October 2014 to 26 March 2015, spanning 26 episodes, and introduced the Regild Century timeline — set thousands of years after the Universal Century, an era whose history has become taboo and largely forgotten.

Reconguista in G was Tomino’s return to the Gundam franchise’s creative helm after Turn A Gundam, and it explored themes of lost history, energy dependence, and cyclical conflict through a setting where the Capital Tower — an orbital elevator — serves as the sacred centre of civilisation. The series is notable for its dense political world-building, featuring multiple factions including the Capital Guard, Capital Army, Amerian Army, G-IT Corps, Pirate Corps, and the lunar settlement of Towasanga.

Plot

Synopsis

The story follows Bellri Zenam, a cadet of the Capital Guard tasked with protecting the Capital Tower, a sacred orbital elevator that supplies photon batteries — an energy source that sustains civilisation. During a skirmish with the Pirate Corps operating the vessel Megafauna, Bellri discovers the YG-111 Gundam G-Self, an ancient mobile suit from a forgotten era that only he can pilot.

Alongside Aida Surugan, an amnesiac woman of mysterious origins, and the pirate crew of the Megafauna led by Captain Donyell Tos, Bellri becomes entangled in a conflict spanning Earth, space, and the Moon. The various factions — each with their own agenda regarding the Capital Tower and its energy supply — collide in a struggle that reveals buried truths about the Universal Century and humanity’s relationship with technology.

Development

Conception

Yoshiyuki Tomino conceived Reconguista in G as a return to the Gundam franchise after his work on Turn A Gundam. The Regild Century setting allowed Tomino to create a world disconnected from the Universal Century’s continuity, whilst still allowing references to that era through archaeological discoveries and technological relics. The title “Reconguista” references the Reconquista — the historical reconquest — suggesting themes of reclaiming lost knowledge and confronting buried history.

The series’ core concept of an orbital elevator (the Capital Tower) as a sacred object provided a fresh take on the space colony conflicts that have defined Gundam. Rather than colonies seeking independence from Earth, the conflict in Reconguista centres on competing interests seeking control of a single structure that provides the energy all of civilisation depends upon.

Production

The series was produced by Sunrise with mechanical designs by Hajime Katoki, character designs by Hirotoshi Takayanagi, and music composed by Yugo Kanno. The animation utilised modern digital production techniques whilst maintaining Tomino’s distinctive approach to action choreography. The series was known for its fast-paced dialogue and complex political narrative, which some viewers found challenging but others praised for its depth.

Music

The series featured music by Yugo Kanno, with opening themes “Reconguista” by Hashimoto Miku and ending themes including “G no Senritsu” by Hashimoto Miku. The soundtrack blended orchestral and electronic elements to reflect the series’ themes of ancient technology meeting modern civilisation.

Release

Compilation films

Following the television broadcast, the series was re-edited into five compilation films released between 2019 and 2022:

  • Gundam Reconguista in G I: Ike! Core Fighter (2019)
  • Gundam Reconguista in G II: Bellri Gekishin (2020)
  • Gundam Reconguista in G III: Uchuu kara no Isan (2021)
  • Gundam Reconguista in G IV: Gekitou ni Sakebu Ai (2022)
  • Gundam Reconguista in G V: Shisen wo Koete (2022)

The films provided enhanced animation, additional scenes, and a more refined narrative structure compared to the original broadcast.

Reception

Reconguista in G received mixed reception during its initial broadcast. The series was praised for its ambitious world-building, political complexity, and Tomino’s return to the director’s chair. However, the dense narrative and fast pacing drew criticism from some viewers who found it difficult to follow. The compilation films were generally better received, as the re-editing allowed for a clearer presentation of the story.

The series has gained appreciation over time for its unique setting and thematic depth. The Regild Century has been recognised as one of the more creative alternate universe timelines in the Gundam franchise, offering a setting that simultaneously references and distances itself from the Universal Century.
