Capital Army
Earth military force responsible for ground operations in the Reconguista conflict.
The Capital Army (首都軍, Shuto-gun) was the Earth military force responsible for ground operations and broader military activities in Mobile Suit Gundam: Reconguista in G. Distinct from the Capital Guard, which focused specifically on defending the Capital Tower, the Capital Army had a wider mandate that encompassed military operations across the territories controlled by the Capital Tower administration.
Overview
The Capital Army represented the military arm of the Capital Tower’s earthly authority. Whilst the Capital Guard protected the Tower itself, the Capital Army was responsible for maintaining order, conducting military operations, and defending the interests of the Capital Tower administration on the ground.
This division of responsibilities created a natural tension between the two organisations. The Capital Guard considered itself the elite defenders of the sacred Tower, whilst the Capital Army handled the messy business of actual warfare. During the Reconguista conflict, this tension became more pronounced as both organisations found themselves competing for influence over the Tower’s future.
History
Role in the Reconguista conflict
The Capital Army played a significant role in the conflict that forms the backdrop of Reconguista in G. As the Pirate Corps operating from the Megafauna and other factions became involved in the struggle over the Capital Tower, the Capital Army was deployed to counter these threats.
Key figures in the Capital Army included Cumpa Rusita, a Capital Army officer who played a significant role in the military operations surrounding the Tower, and Becker Shadam, another Capital Army officer involved in the conflict.
Competition with the Capital Guard
The relationship between the Capital Army and the Capital Guard was characterised by institutional rivalry. Both organisations claimed authority over military matters related to the Capital Tower, and their different perspectives sometimes led to conflicting strategies.
The Capital Guard’s elite status and direct connection to the Tower’s sacred purpose gave it a certain prestige, but the Capital Army’s broader mandate and larger force structure made it a more significant military power in practical terms.
Mobile suits
MSAM-YM03 Montero
The MSAM-YM03 Montero served as the Capital Army’s commander-grade mobile suit. Superior to the mass-produced CAMS-02 Catsith used by the Capital Guard, the Montero was assigned to senior Capital Army officers and provided enhanced combat capabilities for command-level operations.
Other units
The Capital Army operated a range of mobile suits in addition to the Montero, reflecting its larger force structure and broader operational requirements. These included mass production units and specialised machines for various combat scenarios.
Relationships with other factions
The Capital Army’s relationship with other factions was shaped by the complex political landscape of the Regild Century. In addition to its rivalry with the Capital Guard, the Capital Army came into conflict with:
- The Amerian Army, which controlled the American continent and had its own interests in the photon battery supply
- The G-IT Corps, special forces serving Towasanga on the Moon
- The Pirate Corps, operating from the Megafauna
The Capital Army’s position was further complicated by the involvement of Bellri Zenam, a former Capital Guard cadet who defected to the pirate side with the YG-111 Gundam G-Self.
