The YG-111 Gundam G-Self (YG-111 ガンダムG-セルフ, Jī Wan Wan Ichī Gandamu Jī Serufu) was an ancient mobile suit from the era before the Universal Century Taboo that served as the protagonist machine of Mobile Suit Gundam: Reconguista in G. Discovered near the Capital Tower, the G-Self possessed unique security systems that prevented unauthorised use — only Bellri Zenam could pilot the machine, and it required Aida Surugan to activate it through the Rayhunton Code.

History

Origins

The G-Self was created in an era predating the Universal Century Taboo, making it significantly older than most known mobile suit technology. Its origins were tied to the same technological civilisation that developed the photon battery energy system and constructed the Capital Tower orbital elevator. The circumstances under which the G-Self was stored near the Capital Tower and how it survived the passage of millennia were key mysteries in Reconguista in G.

Discovery and activation

The G-Self was discovered during a conflict between the Capital Guard and the Pirate Corps operating from the vessel Megafauna. When Aida Surugan activated the Rayhunton Code, the G-Self powered up, but only Bellri Zenam was able to pilot it. This dual-key security system — one person to activate, another to pilot — was deliberately designed to prevent the G-Self from being used by a single individual without oversight.

The G-Self’s activation set in motion the central conflict of Reconguista in G, as every faction sought to control the ancient mobile suit and its capabilities. The Capital Guard, Capital Army, Amerian Army, and forces from Towasanga all had reasons to want the G-Self under their control.

Throughout the conflict

As the series progressed, the G-Self was equipped with various interchangeable packs that modified its capabilities for different environments and missions. Each pack configuration was designed for specific combat scenarios, making the G-Self one of the most versatile mobile suits in the Regild Century.

Design

Configuration

The G-Self was designed as a multi-role mobile suit capable of operating in space, atmospheric, and ground environments. Its modular pack system allowed it to be reconfigured for different mission profiles, a design philosophy that anticipated the striker pack systems that would appear in later Gundam timelines such as the Cosmic Era.

The G-Self’s design incorporated technology that was far ahead of contemporary mobile suits in the Regild Century. Its photon battery power system, advanced sensor suite, and sophisticated control systems gave it capabilities that no other mobile suit of the era could match without similar pack configurations.

Pack systems

The G-Self’s modular design centred around its interchangeable pack systems. Each pack provided different capabilities and was suited to specific operational environments:

Space Pack

The Space Pack optimised the G-Self for operations in the vacuum of space. It featured enhanced propulsion systems, additional thrusters, and equipment suited for zero-gravity combat. This configuration was essential when the conflict moved beyond Earth’s atmosphere and into the domain of the Capital Tower and Towasanga.

Atmospheric Pack

The Atmospheric Pack was designed for operations within Earth’s atmosphere, providing aerodynamic capabilities and enhanced ground mobility. This configuration allowed the G-Self to engage in atmospheric combat and support ground operations, making it effective against the Capital Army and Amerian Army forces.

Reflector Pack

The Reflector Pack equipped the G-Self with advanced defensive reflector technology. This configuration focused on protection, using reflector systems to deflect incoming beam weapons and other attacks. The Reflector Pack was particularly valuable in engagements against multiple opponents or in defensive scenarios.

Tricky Pack

The Tricky Pack provided electronic warfare and decoy capabilities. This configuration included systems for jamming enemy sensors, deploying decoys, and conducting electronic warfare operations. The Tricky Pack allowed the G-Self to operate in stealth and deception roles, complementing its direct combat capabilities.

Perfect Pack

The Perfect Pack was the ultimate configuration, combining the capabilities of all other packs into a single system. This configuration represented the G-Self at its full potential, providing the machine with space combat capability, atmospheric performance, defensive reflectors, and electronic warfare systems simultaneously. The Perfect Pack made the G-Self the most powerful mobile suit in the Regild Century.

Rayhunton Code system

The G-Self’s security system relied on the Rayhunton Code, a protocol that required specific individuals to serve as activation keys. Aida Surugan and Raraiya Monday were both connected to this system, though their specific roles differed. The Rayhunton Code ensured that the G-Self could not be activated by just anyone, providing a biological or trained safeguard against unauthorised use.

Armaments

The G-Self was equipped with a range of weapons suitable for various combat scenarios:

Beam rifle

The G-Self’s primary ranged weapon was a beam rifle, powered by photon batteries. Beam weapons were rare in the Regild Century, making the G-Self’s armament significant.

Beam sabers

For close combat, the G-Self carried beam sabers — melee weapons that used concentrated beam energy to cut through enemy armor. The G-Self typically carried two beam sabers, allowing for dual-wielding in melee engagements.

Shield

The G-Self was equipped with a shield for defensive purposes. The shield could be augmented by the Reflector Pack’s systems for enhanced protection.
