Vagan
Mars-based faction that waged a century-long war against the Earth Federation.
Vagan (ヴェイガン, Veigan), initially known as the UE (Unknown Enemy), was the primary antagonist faction in Mobile Suit Gundam AGE. Based on Mars, Vagan waged a century-long war against the Earth Federation with the stated goal of liberating space colonists from Earth’s perceived oppression.
Vagan was led by the charismatic FeZarl Ezelcant, who built the faction from a collection of disenfranchised colonists into a powerful military force capable of threatening Earth itself. The faction’s name “Vagan” became known only in the second generation of the war — prior to that, they were known simply as the UE, an unknown enemy whose identity and motives were a mystery.
Overview
Vagan was composed primarily of colonists from Mars and other distant space settlements who felt neglected and exploited by the Earth Federation. Their grievances were legitimate — the Federation’s focus on Earth had left many colonial settlements in poverty and disrepair. However, Vagan’s methods grew increasingly extreme, including terrorist attacks on civilian targets and the use of colony-destroying weapons.
The faction maintained a sophisticated military organisation with advanced mobile suits, warships, and strategic planning capabilities. Vagan’s military technology, whilst initially lagging behind the Earth Federation’s, improved significantly over the course of the war, eventually producing the Gundam Legilis — a mobile suit capable of competing with the Federation’s AGE series.
History
Origins
Vagan’s origins traced back to the Martian colonies, where colonists suffered under Earth Federation neglect. FeZarl Ezelcant emerged as a leader who promised liberation and built a movement around this vision. He used his charisma and political skill to unite disparate colonial groups under the Vagan banner.
The faction established its base on Mars, where it developed military capabilities in secret. Mars’s distance from Earth allowed Vagan to build its forces without the Federation’s knowledge.
The UE attacks (A.G. 101-115)
Vagan’s first attacks on Earth Federation colonies came as a complete surprise. The attack on Ovan in A.G. 101 was particularly devastating, killing many civilians including the mother of Flit Asuno. During this period, Vagan’s identity was unknown — they were referred to only as the UE (Unknown Enemy).
These early attacks demonstrated Vagan’s military capability and the Federation’s unpreparedness for the threat. The UE’s mobile suits were significantly more advanced than the Federation’s standard units, giving them a decisive advantage in early engagements.
Identity revealed
Vagan’s true identity was revealed in the second generation of the war. FeZarl Ezelcant emerged publicly as their leader, presenting himself as a champion of colonial liberation. His dual role — public politician and secret warlord — allowed him to negotiate with the Federation whilst simultaneously ordering military attacks.
Escalation
Under Ezelcant’s leadership, Vagan escalated its campaign against the Earth Federation. The faction developed increasingly advanced mobile suits, including the Gafran mass production unit and elite commander mobile suits like the Zedas and Zeydra.
Vagan’s military strategy evolved from hit-and-run attacks to sustained campaigns aimed at weakening the Federation’s defences and infrastructure. The faction also developed advanced technology, eventually producing the Gundam Legilis as a counter to the Federation’s AGE-series Gundams.
Final conflict
The war reached its climax in the third generation, when Kio Asuno piloted the AGE-FX against Vagan’s most powerful forces. The final battles between Kio and Vagan’s elite pilots determined the fate of both factions and the future of humanity.
