Kio Asuno

Kio Asuno (キオ・アスノ, Kio Asuno) was the third and final generation protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam AGE. Born in A.G. 164, he was the grandson of Flit Asuno and the son of Asemu Asuno. Kio inherited the strongest X-Rounder abilities in the Asuno bloodline and piloted the AGE-3 Gundam and ultimately the AGE-FX.

Kio’s story represents the culmination of the Asuno family’s century-long struggle. Where his grandfather was driven by hatred and his father by the need to prove himself, Kio was driven by compassion and a genuine belief that peace was possible.

Biography

Early life

Kio grew up in a time of relative peace, though the shadow of Vagan still loomed over the Earth Federation. His father Asemu had been presumed dead in battle years earlier, leaving Kio to be raised by his grandfather Flit. Despite Flit’s hardened demeanour, Kio was raised with a strong sense of justice and compassion.

From a young age, Kio showed exceptional X-Rounder abilities — potentially the strongest in the Asuno family. His grandfather recognised this potential and prepared him for the role he would eventually play in the war.

The AGE-3 pilot

When Vagan launched a new offensive, Kio was entrusted with the AGE-3 Gundam, the third generation mobile suit developed through the AGE System. The AGE-3 was the most advanced Gundam of its time, featuring modular configurations including the Fortress for heavy artillery and the Orbital for space combat.

Kio took to piloting with remarkable natural ability, but what set him apart from previous Asuno pilots was his approach to combat. Unlike his grandfather, who fought with hatred, Kio fought with a desire to understand his enemies and find a path to peace. This philosophy often put him at odds with Flit’s more militant approach.

The AGE-FX

As the war reached its climax, the AGE System produced its ultimate creation: the AGE-FX Gundam AGE-FX. This mobile suit represented the culmination of all combat data collected across three generations of Asuno pilots. The AGE-FX was designed to harness Kio’s exceptional X-Rounder abilities to their fullest potential.

The AGE-FX’s transformation sequences and overwhelming firepower made it one of the most powerful mobile suits in the Gundam franchise. More importantly, it became a symbol of Kio’s philosophy — that even the most destructive weapon could be wielded by someone who believed in peace.

Relationships with Vagan

Kio’s interactions with Vagan were markedly different from his grandfather’s. He sought to understand FeZarl Ezelcant’s vision and believed that the conflict between Earth and Vagan could be resolved through dialogue rather than annihilation. His encounters with Vagan pilots like Zeheart Galette were characterised by empathy and a desire to find common ground.

Personality & traits

Kio was optimistic, compassionate, and driven by a genuine desire to end the cycle of violence that had consumed his family for three generations. Unlike Flit, who viewed Vagan as irredeemable, Kio believed that understanding and dialogue could bridge the divide.

His youth sometimes made him naive, and his idealism was tested repeatedly throughout the war. However, his unwavering belief in the possibility of peace ultimately proved to be the series’ most powerful message.

Skills & abilities

Kio possessed the strongest X-Rounder abilities in the Asuno family, surpassing both his father and grandfather. His spatial awareness and combat intuition were exceptional, allowing him to perform manoeuvres that exceeded the capabilities of even the most advanced mobile suits.

The AGE-FX was specifically designed to amplify Kio’s X-Rounder abilities, creating a feedback loop between pilot and machine that pushed the boundaries of what mobile suits could achieve.

AGE-3 Gundam AGE-3 Normal

Kio’s initial mobile suit, the AGE-3 Normal, was a third generation Gundam featuring advanced mobility and modular design. It could be configured into the AGE-3 Fortress for heavy artillery support or the AGE-3 Orbital for space combat.

AGE-FX Gundam AGE-FX

The ultimate evolution of the AGE System, the AGE-FX was designed specifically for Kio and his exceptional X-Rounder abilities. It featured the most powerful weaponry and defensive systems of any Gundam in the series, as well as the ability to interface directly with Kio’s enhanced senses.
