The ovv-f Gafran (ovv-f ガフラン, ovv-f Gafuran) was the standard mass production mobile suit of Vagan in Mobile Suit Gundam AGE. As the backbone of Vagan’s military forces, the Gafran was the mobile suit most commonly encountered by Earth Federation pilots throughout the century-long conflict.

The Gafran’s design reflected Vagan’s resource constraints — it was a practical, effective mobile suit that could be produced in large numbers without requiring the sophisticated manufacturing infrastructure available to the Earth Federation. Despite its relatively simple design, the Gafran was a capable combat unit that posed a significant threat to Federation forces.

History

Development

The Gafran was developed by Vagan’s engineering corps on Mars, where the faction had established its industrial base. Vagan’s mobile suit development was driven by necessity — the faction lacked the resources and manufacturing capacity of the Earth Federation, so their mobile suits needed to be effective, reliable, and producible with limited infrastructure.

The Gafran’s design prioritised practicality over sophistication. It utilised readily available materials and straightforward engineering, allowing Vagan to produce the mobile suit in large numbers at their Martian factories.

Deployment

The Gafran saw extensive deployment throughout the war, from the initial Vagan attacks on space colonies to the final battles near Earth. It was the standard mobile suit for Vagan’s rank-and-file pilots, with elite pilots receiving customised or upgraded units such as the Zedas and Zeydra.

Despite being a mass production unit, the Gafran was capable of holding its own against early Federation mobile suits. However, as the war progressed and the Earth Federation deployed increasingly advanced units — particularly the AGE series of Gundams — the Gafran became outmatched.

Combat performance

In combat, the Gafran was a versatile all-rounder. Its beam rifle provided effective ranged firepower, while its beam sabers allowed it to engage in close combat. The mobile suit’s armour was adequate against ballistic weapons but vulnerable to the Federation’s DODS Rifles.

The Gafran was most effective when deployed in large numbers, using numerical superiority to overwhelm individual Federation units. Vagan commanders frequently used Gafran squadrons to provide support for their elite pilots’ customised mobile suits.

Design

Specifications

The Gafran stood approximately 18.0 metres tall, similar in height to the Earth Federation’s standard mobile suits. Its mass production design meant it was relatively lightweight, with simplified internal systems that facilitated rapid production.

Armaments

Beam Rifle

The Gafran’s primary weapon was a standard beam rifle, providing effective ranged firepower. The weapon was less powerful than the Federation’s DODS Rifle but still capable of damaging mobile suit armour.

Beam Sabers

Two beam sabers were mounted for close combat, consistent with standard mobile suit armament conventions.
