Flit Asuno

Flit Asuno (フリット・アスノ, Furitto Asuno) was the first generation protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam AGE. Born in A.G. 101, he survived a devastating Vagan attack on the space colony Ovan that killed his mother. Before she died, she entrusted him with the AGE Device — a data storage unit containing the blueprints for a powerful mobile suit that would become the AGE-1 Gundam.

Flit dedicated his life to completing the AGE System and fighting Vagan, driven by a promise to his mother and an unyielding desire to protect humanity. His journey from a traumatised boy to the commander of the Earth Federation’s forces forms the backbone of the series’ first generation arc.

Biography

Early life

Flit was born on the space colony Ovan in A.G. 101. When he was a young boy, Vagan forces attacked the colony, killing his mother and destroying his home. Before dying, she handed him the AGE Device and told him about the Gundam — a legendary mobile suit that could save humanity.

After the attack, Flit was taken in by the Earth Federation and raised at their engineering facility. Despite his young age, he displayed extraordinary engineering talent and worked tirelessly to decode and complete the AGE Device’s data. His determination was fuelled by a deep-seated hatred for Vagan and a burning need to avenge his mother’s death.

Building the AGE System

As Flit matured, he became one of the Earth Federation’s most talented engineers. He successfully decoded the AGE Device and used it to develop the AGE System — a revolutionary technology that could analyse combat data and evolve mobile suit designs in real time. This system became the foundation for all subsequent Gundam generations.

Flit built the first AGE-1 Gundam in the federation’s secret workshop, pouring all his knowledge and his mother’s legacy into the machine. When Vagan attacked again, Flit took to the cockpit himself, becoming both the creator and pilot of his creation.

Commander of the Diva

Flit served aboard the assault ship Diva, initially as chief engineer and mobile suit pilot. Over time, he took on a leadership role, commanding the ship’s operations and coordinating the Federation’s response to Vagan threats. His leadership was characterised by tactical brilliance but also by an increasingly rigid worldview shaped by decades of war.

Relationships

Flit developed a close relationship with Emily Amonde, who eventually became his wife and the mother of his son, Asemu. However, his obsession with defeating Vagan often strained his personal relationships, particularly with Asemu, who struggled to live up to his father’s legendary reputation.

Later years

By the third generation, Flit had become a hardened military commander, his youthful idealism replaced by a hardened determination to eradicate Vagan completely. He served as the supreme commander of the Federation forces, overseeing the deployment of the AGE-3 Gundam piloted by his grandson Kio Asuno.

Flit’s arc represents the tragedy of war — a boy who lost everything to violence grew into a man who could see no solution but more violence. His journey through three generations of the Asuno family illustrates the series’ central theme: that hatred, passed down through generations, can only be overcome by choosing a different path.

Personality & traits

Flit was driven, passionate, and deeply principled, but also stubborn and prone to obsession. His mother’s death shaped his entire worldview, and his hatred for Vagan was a constant force in his life. He was a brilliant engineer and a capable pilot, but his single-mindedness often made it difficult for him to see alternative solutions.

As he aged, Flit became increasingly rigid, viewing the world in black-and-white terms. This put him at odds with his grandson Kio, whose compassionate approach to conflict offered a contrast to Flit’s militant philosophy.

Skills & abilities

Flit possessed X-Rounder abilities, a heightened spatial awareness that enhanced his combat performance. Combined with his deep understanding of the AGE System and mobile suit engineering, this made him an exceptionally effective pilot and commander.

His engineering skills were arguably unmatched in the Earth Federation. He designed and built the AGE-1 Gundam from the AGE Device blueprints, a feat that required both technical genius and intimate understanding of the technology.

Mecha

AGE-1 Gundam AGE-1 Normal

Flit’s primary mobile suit, the AGE-1 Normal, was the first Gundam built using the AGE System. It featured a versatile design that could be adapted into different configurations, including the Titus for close combat and the Spallow for high mobility.
