Rei Ayanami

Rei Ayanami is the enigmatic pilot of Evangelion Unit-00 in the Evangelion franchise. Emotionally detached and devoted to Gendo Ikari, Rei is later revealed to be central to both NERV’s operations and SEELE’s Human Instrumentality Project. Her identity and connection to Lilith are key to the story’s climax.

Rei appears across Neon Genesis Evangelion, The End of Evangelion, and the Rebuild of Evangelion films.

Background

Origins

Rei Ayanami is not a single person but a series of clones created by Gendo Ikari and Naoko Akagi using the genetic material of Yui Ikari and the soul of the Second Angel, Lilith. Her body is human in form but Angelic in essence — a vessel designed to serve as a key component of the Human Instrumentality Project.

At least three distinct “Rei” units are activated over the course of the series:

• Rei I — The first clone, killed by Naoko Akagi in a fit of jealous rage after Rei revealed Gendo’s true feelings about her.
• Rei II — The primary Rei of the series. She develops a sense of self and an emotional bond with Shinji before sacrificing herself to destroy Armisael alongside Unit-00.
• Rei III — Activated after Rei II’s death. She retains some memories of her predecessor but is more distant and less emotionally developed.

The Dummy Plug plant

Beneath NERV headquarters, a vast tank holds dozens of soulless Rei clones suspended in LCL. These clones serve as spare bodies for Rei’s soul transfer and as the source data for the Dummy System, which uses Rei’s neural patterns to operate Evangelion units autonomously.

Personality

Rei’s most striking characteristic is her emotional flatness. She speaks in a quiet monotone, rarely initiates conversation, and seems indifferent to her own survival. She lives alone in a sparsely furnished apartment and subsists on a diet of pills and prepackaged food.

Beneath this exterior, however, Rei is not emotionless — she is a person who has never been taught how to feel. Her devotion to Gendo is the one emotional anchor she has, and she clings to it because it gives her existence meaning. Her gradual discovery of other connections — particularly with Shinji — is one of the series’ most affecting character arcs.

In the Rebuild films, Rei’s personality diverges. She is initially warmer and more inquisitive, actively seeking to understand human relationships. Her development in 2.0 — cooking for Shinji, befriending his classmates, trying to bridge the gap between Shinji and Gendo — represents a version of Rei who might have been, had circumstances allowed.

Role in the story

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Rei serves as the pilot of Unit-00 and as Gendo’s most trusted operative. Her emotional journey is subtle but profound: she begins as a tool, content to follow orders without question, but gradually develops self-awareness and a will of her own. Her decision to sacrifice herself to save Shinji rather than follow Gendo’s orders is the culmination of this arc.

The End of Evangelion

During Instrumentality, Rei III merges with Lilith and becomes a godlike being capable of reshaping reality. She initially serves as Gendo’s instrument but ultimately chooses to hand control of Instrumentality to Shinji — an act of agency that defines her character’s final evolution.

Rebuild of Evangelion

In the Rebuild films, Rei’s role is expanded. 2.0 shows her developing a genuine desire for connection, culminating in her absorption by the Tenth Angel. 3.0 reveals that a Rei clone (“Rei Q”) has been activated, lacking the memories and emotional growth of her predecessor. Her journey in 3.0+1.0 mirrors the original series’ arc: a clone discovering her own humanity.

Relationships

• Gendo Ikari — Rei’s primary attachment. She obeys him without question and defends him against criticism. Gendo treats her as a tool, but there is a twisted tenderness to their interactions — she is simultaneously a replacement for Yui and a means to reunite with her.
• Shinji Ikari — Shinji is the first person to treat Rei as a person rather than an instrument. His kindness confuses and moves her in equal measure. Their relationship is ambiguous — part sibling (they share Yui’s DNA), part romantic — and deliberately left unresolved.
• Asuka Langley Soryu — Asuka despises Rei for her passivity and for the attention she receives from Shinji and Gendo. Rei, for her part, seems largely indifferent to Asuka’s hostility.
• Ritsuko Akagi — Ritsuko’s hatred of Rei is personal and complex: Rei reminds her of her mother’s humiliation at Gendo’s hands, and Rei’s existence as a clone represents everything Ritsuko cannot control.
