Dummy System
Autonomous AI control system for Evangelion units, modelled on the data of Kaworu Nagisa and Rei Ayanami.
The Dummy System (ダミーシステム, Damī Shisutemu) was an autonomous artificial intelligence control system developed by NERV to operate Evangelion units without a human pilot. Modelled on the neural data of Kaworu Nagisa and Rei Ayanami, the Dummy System could control an EVA with superhuman efficiency — but at the cost of all human restraint.
Design
The Dummy System replicated the cognitive patterns of its source subjects, creating a pseudo-personality capable of making split-second combat decisions without the hesitation, fear, or moral qualms that afflicted human pilots. The system was not truly sentient — it was a sophisticated imitation of consciousness, designed to produce results whilst remaining completely subservient to its operators’ commands.
The system’s interface took the form of the Dummy Plug, a small device inserted into the Entry Plug in place of a human pilot. When activated, the Dummy Plug assumed full control of the Evangelion, overriding any manual inputs.
Source data
The Dummy System’s effectiveness derived from its unusual source material. Rei Ayanami’s data provided a template of quiet obedience and emotional detachment, whilst Kaworu Nagisa’s data contributed an intuitive understanding of Angel biology and EVA synchronisation. The combination produced an AI that could operate an Evangelion with a fluidity and aggression that human pilots struggled to match.
The ethical implications of using human neural data — particularly data from children — were never publicly acknowledged by NERV’s leadership.
The EVA-03 incident
The Dummy System’s most infamous deployment occurred during the EVA-03 incident. When the imported EVA-03 was revealed to be infected by an Angel, Shinji Ikari refused to fight, unwilling to destroy the unit with his friend Toji Suzuhara still inside. Gendo Ikari responded by switching EVA-01 to Dummy System control.
The Dummy System attacked EVA-03 with brutal, mechanical efficiency. It tore the infected unit apart with bare hands, crushing the Entry Plug and severely injuring Toji. The incident traumatised Shinji and demonstrated the system’s fundamental nature: it felt no compassion, no hesitation, and no remorse. It simply executed its objective with maximum efficiency.
Mass Production EVAs
The Dummy System found its ultimate expression in the Mass Production Evangelions — a series of nine identical EVA units built by SEELE and operated entirely by Dummy System control. These units required no human pilots and followed their programming without deviation. During the events of The End of Evangelion, the Mass Production EVAs attacked EVA-02 with terrifying coordination, ultimately playing a central role in the Human Instrumentality Project.
The Mass Production EVAs’ use of the Dummy System stripped combat of its last vestiges of humanity. The units moved with an unnatural, jerking fluidity — sometimes described as insect-like — and fought without any regard for self-preservation or mercy.
Significance
The Dummy System represented the dehumanisation of combat taken to its logical conclusion. By removing the human pilot — with all their fear, empathy, and moral uncertainty — the system created the perfect weapon: efficient, obedient, and utterly without conscience. It was the antithesis of the Evangelion’s original design, which relied on the bond between mother and child, on love and loss, on the messy unpredictability of human emotion.
The system also raised uncomfortable questions about the nature of consciousness itself. If a machine could replicate the cognitive patterns of a human being well enough to pilot an Evangelion, what did that say about the uniqueness of the human soul?
