Gendo Ikari
Commander of NERV and Shinji's estranged father.
Gendo Ikari is the commander of NERV and the estranged father of Shinji Ikari in the Evangelion franchise. Cold and manipulative, he uses NERV and the Evangelion units ostensibly to serve SEELE’s Human Instrumentality Project, but in truth he pursues a personal goal: reunion with his wife Yui Ikari, whose soul resides in Evangelion Unit-01.
Gendo reports to SEELE but is not a member of the council — he is their instrument, and they are his patrons, but his ultimate loyalty is to no one but Yui.
Gendo appears across Neon Genesis Evangelion, The End of Evangelion, and the Rebuild of Evangelion films.
Background
From Rokubungi to Ikari
Gendo was born Gendo Rokubungi. He was a difficult, solitary man with few connections and no apparent ambition beyond a vague interest in academia. Everything changed when he met Yui Ikari, a brilliant bioengineer working on the early stages of what would become the Evangelion project. Yui saw something in Gendo that no one else did — or perhaps she created it. He fell in love with her completely, took her surname, and built his entire identity around her.
When Yui was absorbed into Unit-01 during a contact experiment, Gendo’s world collapsed. From that moment forward, every decision he made — every manipulation, every betrayal, every life he sacrificed — was in service of one goal: reuniting with Yui.
Rise to power
Gendo’s rise through the ranks of GEHIRN and later NERV was driven by his willingness to do whatever was necessary. He cultivated relationships with SEELE, presenting himself as a useful instrument for their Instrumentality plans. He recruited brilliant but damaged people — Naoko Akagi, Ritsuko Akagi, Kozo Fuyutsuki — and used their weaknesses to bind them to him.
His relationship with his son Shinji was a calculated casualty of this ambition. After Yui’s death, Gendo sent the boy away and had no contact with him for years. When he summoned Shinji back to Tokyo-3, it was not out of paternal concern but because he needed a pilot for Unit-01.
Personality
Gendo Ikari is one of anime’s most chilling villains precisely because he is not a monster — he is a man who has allowed his grief to consume his humanity. He is not sadistic; he is indifferent. People are tools, and tools are used until they break.
His signature pose — hands folded beneath his chin, glasses obscuring his eyes — is a perfect visual encapsulation of his character: guarded, calculating, and emotionally unreachable. He speaks in curt, functional sentences and rarely raises his voice. His cruelty is bureaucratic rather than theatrical.
Yet there are cracks in the armour. In moments of genuine stress, Gendo’s composure breaks. His desperate final plea to Rei during the Instrumentality sequence — “Take me to Yui” — reveals the terrified man beneath the commander’s uniform. He is not a mastermind; he is a widower who cannot let go.
Role in the story
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Gendo orchestrates NERV’s war against the Angels whilst secretly pursuing his own version of Instrumentality — one that would reunite him with Yui rather than merge all humanity into a single consciousness as SEELE intends. He uses Rei as a vessel, Ritsuko as a tool, and Shinji as a pilot, discarding each when they no longer serve his purpose.
His confrontation with SEELE in the final episodes reveals the full extent of his duplicity. He has been playing both sides from the beginning, and when SEELE moves against him, he is ready.
The End of Evangelion
In the film, Gendo attempts to initiate his own version of Instrumentality by merging with Rei — who has merged with Lilith — but Rei rejects him. She turns instead to Shinji, giving control of Instrumentality to the son Gendo abandoned. His final vision is of Yui, who tells him he was afraid of Shinji all along — afraid of being hurt, afraid of failing as a father. He is consumed by Unit-01, his life’s work devouring him at last.
Rebuild of Evangelion
In the Rebuild films, Gendo’s backstory is expanded. We see him as a young man meeting Yui, and we understand more clearly how her loss shattered him. His role in 3.0+1.0 is the culmination of decades of storytelling: he finally confronts Shinji directly, and in doing so, confronts himself. His resolution — allowing himself to be replaced, letting go of Yui — is the most human moment the character ever receives.
Relationships
- Yui Ikari — The centre of Gendo’s universe. Every action he takes is motivated by his desire to be with her again. Whether this is love or obsession is one of the series’ open questions.
- Shinji Ikari — Gendo abandoned Shinji after Yui’s death and has never been a father to him. He is afraid of Shinji — afraid of failing him, afraid of being hurt by him, afraid of the mirror Shinji holds up to his own inadequacy. Their inability to communicate is the tragedy at the heart of the series.
- Rei Ayanami — Rei is Gendo’s creation and his instrument. He treats her with a tenderness he shows no one else, but it is the tenderness of a craftsman for his tool. She is a vessel for Yui’s return, and he values her accordingly.
- Ritsuko Akagi — Gendo uses Ritsuko as he used her mother: as a lover and a scientist, offering just enough affection to keep her loyal. He discards her without hesitation when she becomes a liability.
- SEELE — Gendo works for SEELE but pursues his own agenda behind their backs. Their relationship is one of mutual exploitation that collapses into open conflict by the series’ end.
