NERV

NERV is the paramilitary organisation at the centre of the Evangelion franchise. Funded and nominally overseen by the United Nations, NERV is responsible for developing and deploying the Evangelion units to defend Tokyo-3—and ultimately humanity—against the Angels. Its headquarters are located beneath the city.

NERV is commanded by Gendo Ikari, with Misato Katsuragi overseeing operations. In practice, NERV is manipulated by the secret council SEELE, which uses it to advance the Human Instrumentality Project. The organisation employs the three child pilots Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami, and Asuka Langley Soryu.
