The Evangelion franchise centres on a small cast of pilots and commanders whose psychological struggles drive the story. The three child pilots—Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami, and Asuka Langley Soryu—operate the Evangelion units under NERV, whilst Gendo Ikari and Misato Katsuragi lead and oversee operations.
