Misato Katsuragi

Misato Katsuragi is NERV’s operations director and the guardian of the Evangelion pilots in the franchise. She oversees tactical operations against the Angels and provides a rare emotional anchor for Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami, and Asuka Langley Soryu, despite her own trauma from the Second Impact. Her relationship with Shinji blurs the line between guardian and confidante.

Misato appears across Neon Genesis Evangelion, The End of Evangelion, and the Rebuild of Evangelion films.

Background

Second Impact survivor

Misato was fourteen years old when the Second Impact occurred in Antarctica. She was present at the epicentre — her father, Dr Katsuragi, was the leader of the Katsuragi Expedition that triggered the catastrophe. As the world collapsed around her, her father placed her in a protective capsule, saving her life at the cost of his own. Misato survived, but she was left with a massive scar across her chest and a lifetime of trauma.

For years afterwards, Misato was unable to speak. She recovered physically but carried deep psychological wounds: a hatred for the Angels, a complicated grief over her father (whom she had resented before his sacrifice), and a desperate need to prove that her survival meant something.

Joining NERV

Misato channelled her trauma into action. She joined the military, rose through the ranks, and eventually became NERV’s operations director. Her tactical brilliance and willingness to take risks made her one of the organisation’s most effective commanders. She also became the legal guardian of the child pilots, taking Shinji, and later Asuka, into her home.

Personality

Misato presents two faces to the world. At work, she is a focused, decisive commander who can orchestrate complex military operations under extreme pressure. At home, she is a slob: her apartment is a mess of beer cans, instant food wrappers, and unwashed laundry. She drinks heavily, sleeps late, and seems constitutionally incapable of adult housekeeping.

This split is not hypocrisy but survival. The professional Misato is a construct — a role she plays to give her life purpose. The domestic Misato is closer to who she really is: a damaged woman in her late twenties who never fully processed the trauma of watching her father die.

Her relationship with Shinji is particularly complex. She takes him in because it is convenient for NERV, but she genuinely cares for him in ways that blur professional boundaries. She is part mother, part older sister, and — in some moments — something more troubling. Her inability to maintain clear boundaries with a fourteen-year-old boy reflects her own arrested emotional development.

Role in the story

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Misato is Shinji’s first human connection in Tokyo-3. She picks him up at the station, gives him a home, and becomes his primary source of adult support — however imperfect that support may be. Her tactical leadership guides NERV through each Angel battle, and her willingness to challenge Gendo’s more ruthless decisions makes her one of the few moral voices in the organisation.

Her relationship with Ryoji Kaji — her former lover and a triple agent working for NERV, SEELE, and the Japanese government — adds another layer of complexity. Their on-again, off-again relationship is one of the series’ few depictions of adult love, and it is just as dysfunctional as anything the teenagers experience.

The End of Evangelion

In the film, Misato is mortally wounded during the JSSDF’s assault on NERV. With her last strength, she drags Shinji to Unit-01’s cage and forces him to pilot. Before sending him off, she kisses him — an act that is part maternal reassurance, part romantic confession, and part desperate attempt to give him a reason to live. She dies moments later, killed in the explosion that destroys NERV’s command centre.

Rebuild of Evangelion

In the Rebuild films, Misato’s role evolves dramatically. After the Near Third Impact, she becomes the commander of WILLE — a resistance organisation dedicated to stopping Gendo and preventing the Fourth Impact. Her relationship with Shinji is strained by the fourteen-year gap and her bitterness over the destruction he inadvertently caused. By 3.0+1.0, she has become a harder, colder person — but her core motivation remains the same: protecting the children, even when they cannot protect themselves.

Relationships

Shinji Ikari — Misato is Shinji’s guardian, commander, and closest confidante. She loves him genuinely but struggles to express that love in healthy ways. Her final act in The End of Evangelion — kissing him and sending him to fight — encapsulates the contradictions of their relationship.
Ryoji Kaji — Kaji is Misato’s former lover and the only person who truly understands her. Their relationship is passionate, messy, and ultimately tragic. Kaji’s death (in the TV series) is one of the blows that pushes Misato towards her own end.
Gendo Ikari — Misato respects Gendo’s authority but distrusts his motives. She is one of the few people in NERV willing to challenge him directly.
Asuka Langley Soryu — Misato tries to be a maternal figure to Asuka but finds the girl’s walls impenetrable. Their failure to connect mirrors Asuka’s failure to connect with anyone.
