Dorothy Catalonia

Dorothy Catalonia (ドロシー・カタロニア, Doroshī Kataronia), nicknamed the “Neo-Titanium Girl,” was the granddaughter of Duke Dermail, head of the Romefeller Foundation, and distant cousin of Treize Khushrenada. Born in AC 180, she served as a Romefeller spy at the Sanc Kingdom, later becoming White Fang’s mobile doll operator using the ZERO System. In the Mars Century era (MC 0022), she became President of the Earth Sphere Unified Nation.

Personality

Dorothy represented the antithesis of Relena Peacecraft—where Relena advocated total pacifism, Dorothy spoke in praise of fighting. However, her true purpose was to make people understand they never wanted to fight another war by causing a tragic and terrible conflict. She believed that the more tragic the war, the more fear and loathing would arise in people’s hearts, ultimately creating lasting peace through understanding war’s horror.

Her words and actions longing for war were, in fact, a strong reversal of her true feelings. Dorothy harboured greater aversion to conflict and desire for peace than anyone else—her father, General Chilias Catalonia, had died in battle, and she deeply hated warfare for taking him from her. She put on a strong face to the world, masking her pain with provocative rhetoric about war’s necessity.

Dorothy was quick-witted and eloquent, with negotiating skills that could sway even the old men of the Romefeller Foundation. She excelled at fencing and could go toe-to-toe with Heero Yuy and Quatre Raberba Winner, though both pilots cut corners in their duels with her. Most significantly, Dorothy demonstrated exceptional mental capacity to master the ZERO System, commanding the Virgo II mobile dolls with great skill—one of the few individuals who could withstand the system’s psychological demands.

Biography

Background and family

Dorothy was the granddaughter of Dermail Catalonia, head of the Romefeller Foundation, and daughter of General Chilias Catalonia, former commander-in-chief of the United Earth Sphere Alliance and first General of OZ. Her uncle Hundelt Catalonia made her a distant cousin and niece of Treize Khushrenada, with whom she appeared enamoured as a child, once expressing desire to “marry” him.

Her father’s death in battle profoundly shaped Dorothy’s worldview. Though she spoke passionately about war’s necessity, this masked deep hatred for the conflicts that had robbed her of her father. This contradiction—advocating war whilst despising it—defined her complex character throughout the Eve Wars.

Romefeller spy at Sanc Kingdom (AC 195)

At age 15, Dorothy attended school in the Sanc Kingdom, where Relena Peacecraft taught women total pacifism in the name of her biological father King Peacecraft and adoptive father Vice-Minister Darlian. However, Dorothy was actually a spy for the Romefeller Foundation, reporting on Relena’s activities to her grandfather Dermail.

Though Relena’s aide-de-camp expressed doubts about Dorothy, Relena remained confident she would accept pacifist ideals in time. When OZ attacked the Sanc Kingdom a second time, Dorothy revealed to Relena that she was a Romefeller spy. Though Relena stood true to her ideals, Dorothy told her that peace through pacifism was merely a dream.

Dorothy, who wanted to end the war in her own way, tried to take advantage of Relena’s centripetal force. When the Sanc Kingdom collapsed due to OZ’s invasion, Dorothy manoeuvred to gain support of the anti-Dermail faction for Relena, who had been elevated to Romefeller Foundation representative by Dermail. She then sent the disgraced Dermail into space to die against White Fang, eliminating her grandfather whilst advancing her agenda.

White Fang and ZERO System operator (AC 195-196)

In the ensuing conflict between Earth and the colonies, Dorothy travelled to space to take residence with Milliardo Peacecraft (Zechs Merquise), leader of White Fang. Milliardo’s first thought was to destroy her shuttle, as she came from Romefeller, but he relented when she passionately detailed his history and motivations. She became his second-in-command, witnessing him use Libra’s main cannon to attack Earth and when Relena attempted to dissuade her brother from his goals.

Dorothy later offered Relena a gun to shoot her brother, but Relena clung to her pacifist ideals. Therefore, Dorothy locked her in her room, preventing interference with Milliardo’s plans.

Milliardo showed Dorothy the ZERO System, a complex programme that allowed humans to anticipate attacks, creating the ultimate tactical advantage. Dorothy used the ZERO System to command a mobile doll squadron to hunt down the G Team (Gundam pilots). However, she was defeated by a counterattack from the G Team, which had regrouped with coordination under Quatre Raberba Winner’s command—he had also activated the ZERO System in his Gundam.

Feeling humiliated by this defeat, Dorothy sensed Quatre’s presence through the resonance of the ZERO Systems. From then on, she viewed him as a personal enemy, setting up their final confrontation.

Final battle and duel with Quatre (AC 196)

When the World Nation’s military—mainly composed of piloted Leo Space Types—prepared to intercept Libra, led by Treize Khushrenada who challenged Milliardo to a duel, Dorothy wholeheartedly expected Milliardo to accept. Instead, he refused, stating he was no longer a soldier of OZ. Quinze then pulled a gun on Dorothy because of her insubordination, before firing Libra’s cannon and wiping out a portion of Treize’s forces (though Treize was pushed out of the way by Lady Une in the Wing Gundam).

In the final battle, Dorothy challenged Quatre to a one-on-one fencing match using the ZERO System inside Libra. As they fought, though Dorothy claimed to love warfare, she admitted she deeply hated it for taking her father’s life. She was able to wound Quatre before Trowa Barton intervened.

Dorothy then left Libra as it fell towards Earth, escaping before Heero Yuy in the Wing Zero destroyed the fortress. After the Earth Sphere Unified Nation was formed, Dorothy and Lucrezia Noin paid their respects at Milliardo’s grave—he had seemingly sacrificed himself to destroy Libra. However, Noin believed he had survived.

Battlefield of Pacifists (AC 196)

When Heero tracked down Vulkanus, a military arsenal resource satellite that was one of OZ’s top military secrets, Dorothy offered various advice and information from her position as granddaughter of Duke Dermail. She reunited Relena with Heero, who had come to Europe for inspection after receiving a message from Duo.

Endless Waltz and catalyst for change (AC 197)

During the Mariemaia Incident, when Relena called out to people to stand up against the Mariemaia Army, Dorothy appeared before the crowd watching the broadcast on large television screens. She taunted them as “dogs wagging their tails” going to their master, using provocative rhetoric to spur them to action.

The people realized that peace didn’t come easily for them and that they had to earn it. Dorothy decided to help them in their moment of courage by providing lorries for transportation to Brussels, the Earth Sphere Unified Nation capital, where the Preventers and Gundams were fighting the Mariemaia Army. There, the people, in a pacifist manner, stood up against those who sought to conquer them, eventually leading to complete peace in the Earth Sphere. Dorothy’s provocations had achieved their purpose—motivating people to take responsibility for their own peace.

Preventer 5 (AC 197)

Dorothy was involved in a hostage-taking incident with Relena and others, working to resolve the situation.

President of ESUN (MC 0022)

In Mars Century 0022, Dorothy became President of the Earth Sphere Unified Nation. In this role, she personally gave Preventer agent Kathy Po the orders and data necessary to enact Operation Mythos. When Kathy viewed Treize Khushrenada’s personal history to take part in the operation, she observed a five-year-old Dorothy with her father, OZ leader General Chilias Catalonia, confirming Dorothy’s childhood admiration for Treize.

Skills and abilities

Dorothy possessed exceptional talents across multiple domains:

Negotiation and rhetoric: Her eloquence and quick wit allowed her to manipulate even experienced politicians of the Romefeller Foundation. She could sway opinions through carefully crafted arguments and provocative statements.

Fencing: Dorothy excelled at swordplay, able to match Heero Yuy and Quatre Raberba Winner in combat, though both Gundam pilots reportedly didn’t fight at full capacity.

ZERO System mastery: Most significantly, Dorothy demonstrated exceptional mental capacity to master the ZERO System, one of the few individuals who could withstand its psychological demands. She commanded Virgo II mobile dolls using the system with great skill, nearly defeating the entire G Team through superior tactical coordination.

Strategic thinking: Dorothy’s ability to manipulate political situations—from removing her grandfather Dermail from power to motivating civilians during the Mariemaia Incident—demonstrated sophisticated strategic thinking. Her true agenda of creating lasting peace through understanding war’s horror required complex long-term planning.

Relationships

Relena Peacecraft

Dorothy’s relationship with Relena was built on philosophical opposition—pacifism versus war advocacy. Initially sent as a spy to monitor Relena’s activities, Dorothy challenged her ideals whilst secretly working towards similar goals through opposite means. Both sought lasting peace, but Dorothy believed people needed to understand war’s horror to truly reject it. Their relationship evolved from antagonism to mutual respect, with Dorothy ultimately helping civilians support Relena’s vision during the Mariemaia Incident.

Quatre Raberba Winner

Dorothy viewed Quatre as her primary rival after he defeated her mobile doll squadron using the ZERO System. Their ZERO System resonance created a unique connection between them, leading to their climactic fencing duel inside Libra. During their fight, Dorothy revealed her true feelings about war to Quatre, showing vulnerability she rarely displayed to others.

Treize Khushrenada

As a child, Dorothy admired Treize, expressing desire to marry him. This admiration persisted into adulthood, though it evolved into respect for his philosophy and approach to warfare. As his distant cousin, she understood his beliefs better than most, recognizing that his advocacy for meaningful combat stemmed from similar motivations to her own provocations about war.
