New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Battlefield of Pacifists
Manga side-story between TV series and Endless Waltz.
New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Battlefield of Pacifists (新機動戦記ガンダムW BATTLEFIELD OF PACIFIST, Shin Kidou Senki Gundam Wing: Battlefield of Pacifists) was a manga miniseries based on Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, featuring a side-story set between the TV series and Endless Waltz. Written by Katsuhiko Chiba and illustrated by Kōichi Tokita, the manga was published by Kodansha in 1997 and released in the United States by Tokyopop as Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Battlefield of Pacifists. The story followed the Gundam pilots as they searched for and destroyed Vulkanus, an OZ manufacturing plant full of mobile dolls lost somewhere in space, before it could be used to restart the war.
Overview
Set in summer After Colony 196, the manga took place during the early stages of the Earth Sphere Unified Nation’s disarmament process, with Relena Darlian leading the proceedings. However, rumours circulated about Vulkanus, an OZ manufacturing facility lost in space that contained numerous mobile dolls—autonomous combat units that could be used to reignite conflict.
The story introduced the Perfect Peace People, an organisation calling for even more extreme disarmament measures than Relena herself advocated. This group’s hidden agenda and connection to Vulkanus created the central conflict, as the Gundam pilots worked to prevent the manufacturing plant from falling into the wrong hands.
Unlike Blind Target, which featured the original TV Gundam designs, Battlefield of Pacifists utilized the upgraded versions: Wing Gundam Zero, Deathscythe Hell, Heavyarms Custom, Sandrock Custom, and Altron Gundam.
Story
The threat of Vulkanus
As the Earth Sphere Unified Nation began disarmament proceedings under Relena Darlian’s leadership, the Gundam pilots heard troubling rumours about Vulkanus—an OZ manufacturing plant lost in space, filled with mobile dolls. The facility represented a significant threat: whoever controlled Vulkanus could mass-produce autonomous combat units and restart the war that had just ended.
The Perfect Peace People emerged as a political force calling for more extreme disarmament than even Relena proposed. Led by Victor Gaintz and Klementz, this organisation’s true intentions remained unclear, but their connection to the search for Vulkanus raised suspicions among the pilots.
The hunt begins
The five Gundam pilots—Heero Yuy, Duo Maxwell, Trowa Barton, Quatre Raberba Winner, and Chang Wufei—set out to locate and destroy Vulkanus before anyone could seize control of it. They worked alongside allies including Mike Howard, Sally Po, Hilde Schbeiker, and Dorothy Catalonia.
The investigation revealed that the Perfect Peace People sought to control Vulkanus and its mobile doll production capabilities. The organisation had developed new mobile suit designs, including the OZ-16MSX-D Scorpio and OZ-04MD Virgo3, showing their preparedness for military action despite their pacifist rhetoric.
Resolution and destruction
The Gundam pilots successfully located Vulkanus and confronted the Perfect Peace People’s forces. Using their upgraded Gundams—most notably the Wing Gundam Zero which Heero piloted—they destroyed the manufacturing facility and the mobile dolls it contained, eliminating the threat of renewed mass-produced warfare.
The manga showed that even in peacetime, the pilots remained vigilant against those who would exploit military technology for their own purposes, whether political power or profit. The story demonstrated that true peace required active defence against those who merely used the rhetoric of pacifism to mask their ambitions.
Development
Battlefield of Pacifists was one of several manga side-stories exploring the period between the TV series and Endless Waltz. Published in Comic BomBom, a magazine targeted at younger audiences, the manga was shorter than Blind Target at only 2 chapters compiled into a single volume.
Writer Katsuhiko Chiba and illustrator Kōichi Tokita created a story that explored the challenges of transitioning from war to peace, showing that the Gundam pilots couldn’t simply retire whilst threats to the new peace remained. The English release by Tokyopop made the manga accessible to Western audiences who sought more Gundam Wing content between the series and its sequel.
Reception
Battlefield of Pacifists provided fans with additional adventures of the Gundam pilots during the post-war period. Whilst shorter than other side-stories, it explored an interesting concept—that pacifist organisations could themselves become threats if they sought to impose their vision through force. The manga’s focus on Vulkanus and mobile doll production also connected thematically to the TV series’ exploration of automated warfare.
