WF-02MD Virgo II

The WF-02MD Virgo II (also designated OZ-03MD) was the successor to the unmanned OZ-02MD Virgo, initially developed by OZ and later modified and completed by White Fang as a mobile suit designed specifically for space combat superiority in After Colony 195. The Virgo II corrected its predecessor’s deficiencies by adding shoulder-mounted thruster pods for better mobility, doubling defensive capability with eight planet defensors instead of four, and improving close-to-mid-range combat with a beam rifle and pair of beam sabres. The mobile dolls were later networked to a control room within Libra where a human influenced by a ZERO System relayed battle orders, significantly increasing combat effectiveness.

Overview

The Virgo II represented the culmination of OZ Chief Engineer Tubarov Bilmon’s mobile doll vision, though it was ultimately completed by White Fang after they captured the lunar mobile doll factory. The mobile doll addressed the original Virgo’s weaknesses whilst enhancing its strengths, creating a far more versatile and dangerous autonomous mobile weapon.

The addition of shoulder-mounted thruster pods granted the Virgo II superior mobility compared to its predecessor, allowing faster repositioning and more aggressive maneuvers. The doubling of planet defensors from four to eight expanded the defensive area significantly, making Virgo II formations even harder to penetrate. Multiple Virgo IIs could coordinate their planet defensors to generate enormous barriers protecting entire formations from most conventional weapons.

Most significantly, the Virgo II addressed the original’s deficiency in close-to-mid-range combat. Whilst retaining the option of a mega beam cannon for long-range bombardment, the Virgo II was primarily armed with an easy-to-wield beam rifle and a pair of beam sabres. This armament made it effective at all combat ranges, eliminating the tactical vulnerability that had made the original Virgo predictable.

The integration with a ZERO System-influenced command network was revolutionary. Individual mobile dolls lacked innovation, relying on pre-programmed responses. However, when connected to a human strategist using the ZERO System in Libra’s control room, the Virgo II forces gained adaptive tactical direction whilst retaining the performance advantages of computer-controlled units. This hybrid approach combined human creativity with machine precision and endurance.

Armament

Beam Rifle

The Virgo II’s main weapon was a cartridge-powered beam rifle. Although it had lower output than the mega beam cannon, the beam rifle was easier to wield and had a higher rate of fire, making it more practical for sustained combat. The beam rifle could be stored in storage racks on the shoulder thruster pods when not in use. When required, the Virgo II could use a second beam rifle for increased firepower, effectively doubling its sustained damage output.

Planet Defensors

Like its predecessor, the Virgo II was equipped with planet defensors—small disc-shaped objects capable of generating defensive electromagnetic barriers that blocked most incoming attacks. The Virgo II featured eight planet defensors, four stored on each shoulder, doubling the original Virgo’s defensive capability. When low on energy, they could return to the shoulder racks for recharging.

The increased number of planet defensors allowed Virgo II units to generate more extensive defensive barriers individually and coordinate even more formidable barriers when multiple units worked together. This made Virgo II formations exceptionally difficult to penetrate with conventional beam weapons or projectiles. However, the planet defensors remained vulnerable to laser weapons, which could penetrate the electromagnetic barriers.

Beam Sabres

Unlike the original Virgo, the Virgo II was outfitted with a pair of beam sabres, allowing it to perform melee attacks. The beam sabres were stored on the underside of the shoulder armor, below the shoulder joint. This addition addressed the original Virgo’s complete lack of close-range capability, making the Virgo II dangerous at all combat ranges.

Mega Beam Cannon

When required, the Virgo II could swap its beam rifle for the more destructive mega beam cannon. This weapon was linked to the shoulder-mounted thruster pod via a cable at the back, allowing it to draw energy from the mobile suit’s reactor. The mega beam cannon provided long-range bombardment capability for situations requiring overwhelming firepower.

Special equipment

Mobile Doll Operating System with ZERO System Network

Like its predecessor, the Virgo II was controlled by the mobile doll system, operating autonomously without human pilots. The AI-controlled units could perform maneuvers impossible for human pilots due to G-force limitations.

However, the Virgo II incorporated a revolutionary enhancement: connection to a network that linked each unit to a control room within Libra. In this control room, a human influenced by an Epyon-style ZERO System relayed battle orders to the mobile dolls. This hybrid approach combined the ZERO System’s predictive capabilities with mobile doll precision and endurance, significantly increasing combat effectiveness beyond what either system could achieve independently.

Despite this enhancement, the mobile dolls’ movements still relied fundamentally on pre-programmed data, making them vulnerable to entirely novel tactics that fell outside their programmed parameters.

Operational history

Development and White Fang completion

OZ Chief Engineer Tubarov Bilmon initiated development of the Virgo II as a successor to his previous creation, the OZ-02MD Virgo. The design aimed to address the original’s tactical deficiencies whilst maintaining its strengths. However, Tubarov died during the battle in which White Fang took control of OZ’s mobile doll lunar factory.

White Fang discovered Tubarov’s mobile suit plans, modified them to suit their needs, and began building the new mobile doll as the WF-02MD Virgo II (with OZ designation OZ-03MD). The modifications included enhanced defensive systems, improved mobility, and the addition of close-combat capability—transforming Tubarov’s design into an even more formidable weapon.

White Fang campaign

With the Virgo II, White Fang began a campaign against OZ and the Romefeller Foundation for space independence. The mobile dolls’ superior capabilities allowed White Fang to rapidly eliminate OZ and Romefeller presence in space, establishing colonial supremacy in orbital regions.

Once OZ’s and Romefeller’s space forces were nearly eliminated, White Fang’s army of Virgo IIs deployed against the Gundams in numerous battles. Despite having numerical superiority in each engagement, the abilities of the five Gundams and the skills of the Gundam pilots proved too great. The pilots exploited the mobile dolls’ predictable programming and used tactics that fell outside the Virgos’ parameters, dealing heavy losses to White Fang’s forces.

Final battles and Eve Wars

During White Fang’s final operation to drop Libra onto Earth, the Virgo II army was tasked with defending the massive battleship against combined forces including the five Gundams, an army of Leo Space Types led by Treize Khushrenada in the OZ-00MS2 Tallgeese II, and the Maganac Corps.

The Virgo IIs, coordinated through the ZERO System network, put up fierce resistance. However, the combination of the Gundam pilots’ exceptional skills, Treize’s tactical genius, and the overwhelming numbers of attacking forces eventually overwhelmed White Fang’s mobile doll army. Chang Wufei alone destroyed forty Virgo II units, demonstrating that whilst individual mobile dolls were formidable, they could not match truly exceptional human pilots.

In Endless Waltz, some Virgo II units retained the original Virgo’s colour scheme alongside units in White Fang colours, suggesting they were hastily refitted before the final battle without time for repainting.
