Chilias Catalonia

General Chilias Catalonia was the original commander-in-chief of the United Earth Sphere Alliance military forces and the first General of the Organization of the Zodiac before AC 193. The son of Duke Dermail, head of the Romefeller Foundation, and father of Dorothy Catalonia, he died in battle in AC 193 and was succeeded as OZ commander by Treize Khushrenada. His death profoundly affected both his daughter Dorothy and his father Dermail, whose subsequent actions were partly motivated by grief and desire for vengeance.

Biography

Chilias’s career traces the rise of the Organization of the Zodiac inside the United Earth Sphere Alliance and the influence his death wielded over the Romefeller Foundation aristocracy.

Early career

Chilias Catalonia was born into the aristocratic Catalonia family, one of the most powerful families within the Romefeller Foundation. As the son of Duke Dermail, the foundation’s head, Chilias was groomed for leadership from an early age. He had at least one sibling, his brother Hundelt Catalonia, and through family connections was distantly related to the Khushrenada family.

Leadership of OZ

According to New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Episode Zero and New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Frozen Teardrop, the Organization of the Zodiac was established before AC 175 as the military wing of the Romefeller Foundation. Chilias Catalonia served as the original leader of OZ and held the position of commander-in-chief of the United Earth Sphere Alliance military forces.

As OZ’s first General, Chilias commanded the organisation during its formative years, overseeing its development from a Romefeller military arm into a powerful force within the Alliance structure. His leadership style and policies during this period established many of the institutional practices that would continue under his successor.

Chilias had a daughter, Dorothy, whom he raised within the aristocratic society of the Romefeller Foundation. As a young child, Dorothy admired Treize Khushrenada, a rising star within OZ and a distant relative through the Catalonia-Khushrenada family connections. She once expressed a childish desire to “marry” Treize, demonstrating the close relationship between the families.

Death in battle

In AC 193, General Chilias Catalonia died in battle. The specific circumstances of his death remain unclear, but the loss had immediate and far-reaching consequences for both OZ and the Romefeller Foundation. Following Chilias’s death, Treize Khushrenada was appointed as the new General of OZ, ascending to command of the organisation and beginning his transformation of it into a more sophisticated and philosophically driven military force.

Chilias’s death deeply affected his father, Duke Dermail. The strongest embodiment of the corrupt nature of the Romefeller Foundation, Dermail’s subsequent hardline policies and actions were partly motivated by the loss of his son. His grief and desire for vengeance influenced his political machinations and contributed to the increasingly militaristic stance the foundation would take in the years leading up to AC 195.

For his daughter Dorothy, Chilias’s death in combat created a profound trauma that shaped her entire personality. Though she would later present herself as an advocate for war and conflict, this was a strong reversal of her true feelings. Dorothy actually harboured greater aversion to conflict and desire for peace than anyone else—her father’s death in battle had taught her to deeply hate warfare for taking him from her. She put on a strong face to the world, masking her pain with provocative rhetoric about war’s necessity, a psychological defence mechanism that would define her interactions throughout the Eve Wars.

Legacy in Frozen Teardrop

In Mars Century 0022, decades after the events of AC 195, Preventer agent Kathy Po viewed Treize Khushrenada’s personal history as part of Operation Mythos. In these records, she observed a five-year-old Dorothy with her father, OZ leader General Chilias Catalonia, confirming Dorothy’s childhood admiration for Treize and providing a glimpse of the relationship between the Catalonia family and Treize before Chilias’s death.

Physical appearance

Contemporary OZ portraits depict Chilias in midnight-blue general’s regalia trimmed with gold braid, a tailored uniform that signalled his authority within the organisation. Flashback illustrations show neatly styled blonde hair and a composed expression that reflected the patrician bearing expected of Romefeller nobility.

Personality & traits

Accounts from within OZ and the Romefeller Foundation portray Chilias as a capable commander whose authority rested on both political acumen and military credibility. Based on the limited information available, he appears to have been a leader who commanded respect within both organisations. His position as commander-in-chief of the Alliance and first General of OZ indicates he possessed the political acumen and military skill necessary to navigate the complex relationship between the foundation and the Alliance military structure.

As a father, Chilias’s relationship with Dorothy seems to have been loving, as evidenced by the profound grief she experienced following his death. Her deep hatred of war stemming from his death suggests he was a significant presence in her early life, and his loss created a wound that never truly healed.

Skills & abilities

As the founding general of OZ, Chilias combined aristocratic diplomacy with battlefield command experience. He orchestrated OZ’s early organisational reforms, negotiated Romefeller political alliances, and was reputedly an accomplished strategian capable of directing large-scale operations. His mentorship of younger officers, including Treize Khushrenada, demonstrates a talent for cultivating leadership within the organisation.

Relationships

Chilias’s closest ties bound the Catalonia family to the Romefeller Foundation hierarchy and to the officers who inherited OZ after his death.

Dermail Catalonia

Duke Dermail was Chilias’s father and the head of the Romefeller Foundation. The loss of his son in battle hardened Dermail’s already authoritarian tendencies, contributing to his increasingly ruthless pursuit of power and control over the Earth Sphere.

Dorothy Catalonia

Dorothy was Chilias’s daughter. His death in battle when she was young profoundly traumatised her, creating a deep-seated hatred of warfare that she masked with provocative pro-war rhetoric. Her entire personality in AC 195 was shaped by the need to cope with the loss of her father.

Treize Khushrenada

Treize Khushrenada succeeded Chilias as General of OZ following his death in AC 193. As a distant relative through family connections and a figure admired by young Dorothy, Treize’s relationship with the Catalonia family was close. His succession to Chilias’s position marked a significant transition in OZ’s leadership and philosophy.

Military career

As OZ’s inaugural general, Chilias oversaw the transformation of Romefeller’s private army into a disciplined force embedded within the United Earth Sphere Alliance. He commanded during the First Lunar War, accepted responsibility for failed operations to shield promising officers, and established doctrines that Treize would later refine. His death in AC 193 removed the movement’s founding figure, creating the vacuum that allowed Treize’s more philosophical interpretation of OZ to emerge.

Equipment

No canonical sources depict Chilias piloting mobile suits; instead he wields authority through OZ command structures, political leverage, and strategic planning executed by elite units.

Legacy

Chilias’s death reverberated across the Catalonia dynasty and OZ itself. For Duke Dermail, the loss fuelled his embrace of hardline Romefeller policies, while Dorothy’s trauma manifested as the pro-war façade she adopted throughout the Eve Wars. Within OZ, the vacancy he left allowed Treize Khushrenada to reshape the organisation around a more philosophical doctrine that still rested on the institutional framework Chilias created.

Behind the scenes

Chilias Catalonia appears primarily in supplemental media such as New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Episode Zero and Frozen Teardrop; the televised series references him only in flashback dialogue. His name may draw from the Greek chilioi, meaning “thousand”, echoing the After Colony habit of numerical inspirations, though the derivation remains speculative. The exact details of his AC 193 death have never been depicted on screen.
