White Fang
Militant colonial liberation fighting for space independence.
White Fang (ホワイト・ファング, Howaito Fangu) was a militant colonial liberation organisation dedicated to freeing the space colonies from control by Earth-based powers including the United Earth Sphere Alliance, OZ, and the Romefeller Foundation in the After Colony era. Led initially by Quinze and later by Zechs Merquise (operating under his birth name Milliardo Peacecraft), White Fang obtained its military force by seizing space-based resources and facilities established by Romefeller, including the lunar mobile doll factory and the massive space battleship Libra.
Overview
White Fang represented the violent extreme of the colonial independence movement. Whilst organisations like the Colony Liberation Organization advocated peaceful resistance and figures like Heero Yuy promoted total pacifism, White Fang embraced military action as the only viable path to colonial freedom. The organisation’s philosophy held that Earth would never voluntarily relinquish control over the colonies, making armed rebellion necessary.
The organisation’s sentiments traced back as far as AC 140, when the colonies first submitted to Alliance control. Violent terrorist acts were committed in the name of independence as early as AC 145, though this violence slowed when pacifist leader Heero Yuy rose to prominence. After Yuy’s assassination in AC 175, stepped-up security forced the rebels underground, where they continued planning for eventual armed uprising.
White Fang’s military strength came not from building new forces but from capturing existing OZ and Romefeller assets. The organisation seized the lunar mobile doll factory, giving it access to WF-02MD Virgo II mobile dolls and the ability to produce more. It also captured the space battleship Libra, Romefeller’s most powerful military asset, making it White Fang’s flagship. This strategy of asset seizure allowed White Fang to rapidly achieve military parity with Earth forces.
History
Origins and underground resistance
White Fang sentiments existed as early as AC 140, when the colonies first submitted to Alliance control. One might consider White Fang a militant offshoot of the Colony Autonomy Organization. Violent terrorist acts were being committed in the name of independence as early as AC 145, though the scale remained limited.
The violence slowed when pacifist leader Heero Yuy rose to prominence, offering a peaceful path to independence. However, after Yuy’s assassination in AC 175, orchestrated by the Romefeller Foundation, the new Alliance occupation created more hatred than ever. Stepped-up security forced the rebels underground, where they continued planning whilst waiting for the right opportunity.
Quinze and Operation Meteor
Quinze, a former follower of Heero Yuy, became a pivotal leader in the colonial independence movement. Originally advocating pacifism like his mentor, perhaps Yuy’s death twisted his spirit towards violence. Quinze orchestrated the original Operation Meteor, which involved crashing several colonies into Earth, decimating its population in a genocidal act of revenge.
The five Gundam Scientists changed the plan, sending the five Gundams to Earth to dismantle OZ and bring peace through less extreme measures. However, this modified Operation Meteor failed due to Treize Khushrenada’s manipulation, allowing OZ to take over the Earth Sphere instead of liberating it.
Formation and rise
In the chaos following the conflict between OZ and the Alliance, Quinze saw an opportunity to avenge Heero Yuy’s death. White Fang needed a charismatic leader to counter Romefeller’s Treize Khushrenada, so Quinze offered leadership to Milliardo Peacecraft (Zechs Merquise). According to Glory of the Losers, Quinze went so far as naming the entire organisation after the “White Fang”, the weapon of the prototype mobile suit “Satan” that Milliardo once piloted as a test pilot for the rebel army.
Together, Quinze and Milliardo took over the OZ mobile doll plant on the lunar surface and built a huge army of WF-02MD Virgo II mobile dolls. They also seized the space battleship Libra, making it their flagship. With its forces assembled, White Fang declared war on Earth.
Final battle and destruction
During the final battle against the Earth Sphere Unified Nation led by Treize Khushrenada in December AC 195, Quinze made a last-ditch attempt at revenge. He set Libra on a collision course with Earth, knowing the resulting crash would destroy all life on the planet—the ultimate expression of his genocidal philosophy.
The battleship Peacemillion collided with Libra, damaging it sufficiently to prevent the catastrophic impact. The combined forces of the five Gundams, OZ forces led by Treize, and the Maganac Corps destroyed White Fang’s mobile doll army. Heero Yuy in the Wing Gundam Zero and Zechs in the Gundam Epyon destroyed the remaining section of Libra before it could impact Earth, eliminating White Fang entirely.
Ironically, whilst White Fang’s forces were wiped out, they still achieved their ultimate goal of peace for the colonies. The war’s devastation convinced both Earth and the colonies that lasting peace required genuine cooperation rather than military occupation, leading to the formation of a more representative Earth Sphere Unified Nation.
Organisation
Command structure
White Fang operated through a military command structure with Quinze as founder and strategist and Zechs Merquise (Milliardo Peacecraft) as field commander. The organisation’s leadership was based aboard the space battleship Libra, which served as both headquarters and symbol of White Fang’s military power.
Notable members
- Quinze – Founder and strategist
- Zechs Merquise (Milliardo Peacecraft) – Commander

Military
White Fang’s military consisted primarily of captured and seized assets:
Mobile dolls:
- WF-02MD Virgo II – Primary mobile doll force
- WF-12SMS Taurus – Captured OZ Taurus units
- OZ-06MS Leo – Various captured Leo units
Capital ships:
- Libra – Massive space battleship flagship
The organisation’s strength came from its ability to operate captured OZ mobile dolls and production facilities, allowing it to build forces that rivalled Earth’s military capabilities despite starting with minimal resources.
Appearances
White Fang appeared in the following works:
- Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (anime series, episodes 38-49)
- Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Endless Waltz: Glory of the Losers (manga)
