New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Frozen Teardrop
Novel series set in Mars Century era after Endless Waltz.
New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Frozen Teardrop (新機動戦記ガンダムW Frozen Teardrop, Shin Kidō Senki Gandamu W Frozen Teardrop) was a novel series written by Katsuyuki Sumizawa that took place approximately 20-30 years after the events of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and Endless Waltz in the new Mars Century (MC) era. The novel began serialization in the August 2010 issue of Gundam Ace and concluded in 2015, with the first two collected tankobon volumes released in February 2011 alongside a drama CD featuring Midorikawa Hikaru and Seki Toshihiko.
Overview
Frozen Teardrop served as both a sequel to Endless Waltz and an expanded backstory for the original series. The novel filled in vital details regarding the early After Colony era, including the origins and backgrounds of OZ leader Treize Khushrenada and Gundam pilot Heero Yuy.
The story began with Preventer agent Kathy Po, daughter of Sally Po, who meets Father Maxwell (the original Duo Maxwell) and his son Duo. She hands a data chip from ESUN President Dorothy Catalonia containing three segments to her superior officer Master Chang (Chang Wufei), who uses the data to awaken the “Aurora Princess” (Heero Yuy) from cryogenic sleep and set forth Operation Mythos.
The novel explored the history of the young Mars Federation and its government, including the assassination of its President, Dix-Neuf Noinheim (who had been operating under the alias “Milliardo Peacecraft”). The assassin, Trowa Phobos (a boy with no name), was detained by Doktor T and Instructor W and trained as a pilot.
Story
The novel followed multiple timelines, weaving together events from the early After Colony era with the Mars Century era approximately two decades later:
Mars Century MC-0022:
- Heero Yuy awakened from cryosleep for Operation Mythos
- Relena Peacecraft serving as President of Mars Federation
- Zechs Merquise (as Cyrene Wind) piloting Tallgeese Heaven
- The original Gundam pilots now older: Father Maxwell (Duo), Master Chang (Wufei), Doktor T (Trowa), Instructor W (Quatre)
- Next generation including Duo Maxwell II, Trowa Phobos, Katherine Winner, Naina and Mille Peacecraft
After Colony backstory:
- Treize Khushrenada’s origins and childhood
- Heero Yuy’s training under Odin Lowe
- The Peacecraft princesses Katrina and Sabrina
- Early OZ operations and conflicts
The novel incorporated elements that would later appear in Glory of the Losers, creating an interconnected narrative across multiple Gundam Wing media.
Development
Frozen Teardrop was created by Katsuyuki Sumizawa, head writer of the original Gundam Wing TV series, ensuring continuity with the anime. Illustrator Sakura Asagi provided character art, whilst MORUGA contributed mechanical illustrations alongside Katoki Hajime’s mobile suit designs.
The novel ran concurrently with Glory of the Losers as part of the 15th anniversary celebration of Gundam Wing in Japan, allowing cross-referencing between the two works.
Reception
Frozen Teardrop received mixed reception from fans. Some appreciated the expanded backstory for beloved characters and the continuation of their stories into the Mars Century era. Others found the complex narrative structure and darker tone challenging. The novel remained officially Japan-only without English translation, limiting its accessibility to Western audiences.
The drama CD packaged with the February 2011 Gundam Ace featured original voice actors Midorikawa Hikaru (Heero) and Seki Toshihiko (Duo), adding authenticity to the audio adaptation.
