Eve Wars
Main conflict of After Colony 195 culminating in Libra's destruction.
The Eve Wars was the major conflict of After Colony 195, spanning from Operation Meteor’s initiation in April through the final battle on 24 December AC 195. The conflict saw the fall of the United Earth Sphere Alliance, the rise and transformation of OZ, the creation of the Earth Sphere Unified Nation, and the emergence of White Fang as a colonial rebellion. The war culminated in the destruction of the Libra battlestation and Peacemillion, the deaths of Treize Khushrenada, the Gundam Scientists, and Quinze Quarante, and the establishment of peace between Earth and the colonies.
Prelude
Colonial oppression
The United Earth Sphere Alliance maintained iron-fisted control over the space colonies through its military arm, OZ. Following the assassination of pacifist colonial leader Heero Yuy on 7 April AC 175 by OZ agent Odin Lowe, the Alliance tightened its grip on the colonies, cutting off communications to prevent rebellion.
The assassination provoked the very rebellion it sought to prevent. Five disgruntled scientists who had worked on OZ’s Tallgeese project fled to the colonies and developed five advanced Gundams constructed from rare Gundanium alloy. They formulated Operation Meteor, originally conceived by Dekim Barton and Quinze Quarante as a colony drop followed by Gundam deployment, but modified by the scientists to eliminate only OZ through surgical strikes.
Event
Operation Meteor (April AC 195)
On 7 April AC 195, Operation Meteor began with five teenage pilots descending to Earth in their Gundams: Heero Yuy (Wing Gundam), Duo Maxwell (Gundam Deathscythe), Trowa Barton (Gundam Heavyarms), Quatre Raberba Winner (Gundam Sandrock), and Chang Wufei (Shenlong Gundam).
The pilots initially operated independently, unaware of each others’ existence, conducting strikes against OZ bases and mobile suit facilities.
OZ coup (May AC 195)
On 19 May AC 195, OZ manipulated the Gundam pilots into attacking a peace conference at New Edwards base through false intelligence suggesting OZ leaders would be present. Instead, Field Marshal Noventa and other Alliance peace advocates were killed, providing OZ with justification to launch a simultaneous coup against the Alliance.
Within days, OZ seized control from the Alliance, effectively ending the organization and establishing OZ as the dominant military force in the Earth Sphere.
Romefeller Foundation ascendancy
The Romefeller Foundation, the aristocratic organization manipulating OZ, emerged from the shadows. Led by Duke Dermail, the foundation created the Earth Sphere Unified Nation in AC 195 with Relena Peacecraft as Queen, intending her as a figurehead.
However, conflict arose between Dermail and Treize Khushrenada over mobile doll technology. Treize opposed automated warfare, whilst Dermail saw it as key to absolute power. Dermail forced Treize’s resignation and exile.
Sanc Kingdom destruction
The Romefeller Foundation orchestrated Operation Nova, deploying mobile doll armies from the lunar base to crush the Treize faction and the peace-oriented Sanc Kingdom. The Sanc Kingdom fell, and Relena was forced to become the Romefeller Foundation’s chief representative.
White Fang emergence
White Fang, a colonial rebel group led by Quinze Quarante (later Zechs Merquise), emerged from the shadows. They captured the Romefeller Foundation’s lunar base and the under-construction Libra battlestation. Duke Dermail was killed by White Fang mobile dolls en route to the Bulge, accelerating the foundation’s collapse.
Treize Khushrenada returned, forcing Relena’s abdication and becoming leader of the ESUN. He assembled military forces to confront White Fang.
Final battle (24 December AC 195)
The war culminated on 24 December AC 195 (Christmas Eve) in a massive space battle between the ESUN forces led by Treize and White Fang commanded by Zechs Merquise.
Zechs and Quinze set Libra on a collision course with Earth to execute the original Operation Meteor. Peacemillion rammed Libra’s main cannon, but the damaged battlestation continued towards Earth.
Relena and Lady Une broadcast to the Earth Sphere, showing the futility of the conflict. The colonies renounced White Fang and called for peace.
Treize Khushrenada, piloting the Tallgeese II, was killed in combat with Chang Wufei in the Altron Gundam. Treize deliberately allowed Wufei to strike the killing blow, believing his death would end the war.
The Gundam Scientists activated Peacemillion’s engines, sacrificing themselves and Quinze to divert Libra. A separated section continued to fall, but Heero Yuy in the Wing Zero destroyed it with the twin buster rifle, preventing catastrophe.
Aftermath
Political transformation
The Earth Sphere Unified Nation transitioned from a monarchy to a democracy. Relena Peacecraft became Vice Foreign Minister, continuing her advocacy for pacifism through democratic means rather than as a figurehead monarch.
The ESUN adopted a policy of total pacifism, dismantling all mobile suits and dissolving military forces. However, they retained the secret Preventers organization to address threats to peace covertly.
Military outcome
White Fang dissolved following the deaths of Zechs (presumed) and Quinze, and the colonies’ renunciation of support. OZ effectively ended with Treize’s death, though remnant forces were integrated into the Preventers.
The Gundam pilots agreed to send their Gundams into the sun, believing the age of mobile suit warfare had ended.
Legacy
The Eve Wars established the framework for peace between Earth and the colonies, though this peace proved fragile. Within one year, the Mariemaia Incident would test whether the post-war order could survive without military power.
The war demonstrated the dangers of extremism on both sides—Romefeller’s aristocratic authoritarianism and White Fang’s vengeful colony drop both threatened the Earth Sphere. The conflict’s resolution through Relena’s advocacy and the Gundam pilots’ restraint suggested that peace required both idealism and the will to protect it.
Behind the scenes
The Eve Wars served as the primary conflict of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, named for its climax on Christmas Eve (24 December AC 195). The conflict’s multi-sided nature—with shifting alliances and ideological divisions cutting across the Earth-colonies divide—distinguished it from simpler Earth-vs-space narratives in other Gundam series.
