Evangelion Unit-01
The most powerful Evangelion unit, containing the soul of Yui Ikari and piloted by Shinji.
Evangelion Unit-01 was the most powerful and most significant of the Evangelion units in the Evangelion franchise. Piloted by Shinji Ikari, it was unique among the Evangelions in that it contained the soul of Yui Ikari—Shinji’s mother and Gendo’s wife. This made Unit-01 not merely a weapon, but a vessel of maternal protection and, ultimately, a key instrument in the Human Instrumentality Project.
Design
Unit-01 was the first production-model Evangelion, built as a test platform for the technology that would be refined in later units. Its distinctive purple and green colour scheme set it apart from the orange of Unit-00 and the red of Unit-02.
The unit’s most remarkable feature was its capacity for autonomous action. When Shinji’s life was in mortal danger, Unit-01 would sometimes activate on its own, entering a berserk state in which it fought with terrifying ferocity. This behaviour was later revealed to be the influence of Yui’s soul, protecting her son from within the machine.

Armaments
Unit-01’s primary weapons were:
- Progressive Knife — A high-frequency vibration blade capable of cutting through Angel armour. It was Unit-01’s standard melee weapon and was stored in a holster on the unit’s shoulder pylon.
- Pallet Rifle — A standard-issue automatic firearm used in most early engagements. Effective for suppressing fire but often insufficient to penetrate Angel AT Fields without close-range application.
- Positron Rifle — A high-powered energy weapon used for long-range engagements. It required extended charging time and was most famously deployed during Operation Yashima against Ramiel.
- Berserker mode — When Unit-01 entered a berserk state, it fought with its bare hands, tearing Angels apart with its fingers and teeth. This was not a weapon in the conventional sense, but it was arguably Unit-01’s most effective combat mode.
Operational history
First activation
Unit-01’s first activation occurred in episode 1 of Neon Genesis Evangelion, when Shinji was forced to pilot the unit against the Angel Sachiel. Despite having no training, Shinji synchronised with the unit and defeated the Angel—though not before Unit-01 went berserk and continued fighting after Shinji lost consciousness.
Key battles
Unit-01 participated in every major battle of the series:
- Battle against Sachiel — Unit-01’s first combat, in which it demonstrated its capacity for berserker action.
- Battle against Shamshel — Unit-01 fought the Angel in close combat, nearly losing before going berserk.
- Battle against Ramiel — Unit-01 provided cover fire for Unit-00 during Operation Yashima.
- Battle against Zeruel — Unit-01 was critically damaged and lost an arm. It then went berserk, reactivated with an S² Engine harvested from Zeruel, and destroyed the Angel in a display of raw savagery.
- Battle against the Mass Production Evangelions — In The End of Evangelion, Unit-01 fought the nine MP Evangelions and was crucified by them. This triggered the Third Impact.
The Third Impact
In The End of Evangelion, Unit-01 became the catalyst for the Third Impact. After being crucified by the Mass Production Evangelions, the unit awakened and initiated Instrumentality. Yui’s soul, still within the unit, chose to preserve humanity’s individual existence—allowing Shinji and Asuka to survive in the new world.
Significance
Unit-01 was more than a weapon. It was a mother protecting her child, a key to the Human Instrumentality Project, and the means by which humanity’s future was decided. Its berserker episodes were not malfunctions—they were acts of love.
