Evangelion Units 03–13
The remaining Evangelion units, from the ill-fated Unit-03 to the enigmatic Unit-13.
Evangelion Units 03 through 13 were the remaining Evangelion units in the Evangelion franchise. Unlike the first three units, which were unique prototypes and test platforms, these units varied in design, purpose, and fate. Some were production models; others were something else entirely.
Unit-03
Overview
Evangelion Unit-03 was the fourth Evangelion unit, built in the United States and transported to Japan for activation testing. It was intended to be piloted by Toji Suzuhara, a classmate and friend of Shinji Ikari and Kensuke Aida.
The Bardiel incident
During its activation test, Unit-03 was possessed by the Angel Bardiel. The Angel took control of the unit and went on a rampage, attacking Tokyo-3. NERV was forced to make a terrible decision: destroy the unit, killing the pilot inside.
Gendo Ikari activated the Dummy System and ordered Unit-01 to destroy Unit-03. Shinji Ikari, unaware that his friend Toji was inside, fought the unit and ultimately tore it apart. Toji survived but was severely injured, losing his left leg. (In the manga adaptation by Sadamoto, Toji dies in this incident.)
The incident was one of the most traumatic events of the series, and it marked Shinji’s final break with his father.
Units 04 and beyond
Unit-04
Evangelion Unit-04 was built in the United States and was undergoing testing when an accident occurred during an S² Engine installation experiment. The unit, along with the entire facility, vanished. The incident was classified, and no further units were built in the US.
Units 05–13
The remaining units were built by NERV and deployed as needed. Their histories were varied:
- Unit-05 — Appeared in Evangelion 2.0, piloted by Mari Illustrious Makinami. It was a temporary unit, built for a specific mission and discarded after use.
- Units 06–12 — These units were either destroyed in battle or repurposed for the Human Instrumentality Project.
- Unit-13 — The final Evangelion unit, built by NERV for the Instrumentality project. It appeared in Evangelion 3.0 and was piloted by both Shinji and Kaworu in a dual-pilot configuration.
Mass Production Evangelions
Overview
The Mass Production Evangelions (MP Evangelions) were a series of nine identical units built by SEELE as part of the Human Instrumentality Project. Unlike the earlier units, they were not designed for piloting—they were controlled by the Dummy System and operated autonomously.
Design
The MP Evangelions were distinctive in their white, featureless design. They lacked the individuality of the earlier units and moved with an unsettling, mechanical precision. Each unit was equipped with a copy of the S² Engine, giving them unlimited operational time.
Role in Instrumentality
In The End of Evangelion, the nine MP Evangelions were deployed against Unit-02. Despite Asuka’s skill, the units overwhelmed and destroyed Unit-02. They then proceeded to crucify Unit-01, triggering the Third Impact.
The MP Evangelions were not truly defeated—they were consumed by Unit-01 during Instrumentality, their souls merged with the collective consciousness of humanity.
