Evangelion Unit-02 was the first true production-model Evangelion in the Evangelion franchise. Unlike the prototype Unit-00 and the test-type Unit-01, Unit-02 was designed from the outset for combat. It was piloted primarily by Asuka Langley Soryu, who took great pride in her role as its pilot.

Design

Unit-02 was the first Evangelion to be built with combat as its primary purpose. Its red armour and streamlined design reflected this focus. It was more agile than Unit-01 and better suited to close-quarters combat, though it lacked the raw power of its predecessor.

The unit was equipped with standard Evangelion armaments and was capable of operating underwater—a feature that proved critical during the battle against the Angel Gaghiel.

Operational history

Arrival and early battles

Unit-02 was introduced in episode 8 of Neon Genesis Evangelion, when Asuka arrived in Tokyo-3 to take up her post as its pilot. Her first battle was against the Angel Gaghiel, which she fought underwater alongside Shinji Ikari in Unit-01. She defeated the Angel with characteristic flair.

Peak performance

During the middle episodes of the series, Unit-02 was Asuka’s primary weapon and the source of her pride. She achieved a series of victories, establishing herself as NERV’s most skilled pilot. Her synchronisation ratio with the unit was high, and she fought with a combination of aggression and precision that set her apart from Shinji’s reluctant style.

Decline and destruction

Asuka’s mental deterioration following her discovery of her mother’s soul in Unit-02—and her subsequent loss of synchronisation—left the unit effectively unmanned. During the battle against the Angel Zeruel, Asuka was unable to pilot Unit-02 effectively, and the unit was critically damaged.

In The End of Evangelion, Unit-02 was deployed against the nine Mass Production Evangelions. Asuka, having regained her will to live, piloted the unit in a desperate battle. Despite her skill, Unit-02 was overwhelmed and destroyed. The Mass Production Evangelions then consumed the unit’s remains.

Rebuild of Evangelion

In the Rebuild films, Unit-02’s history was altered. In Evangelion 2.0, the unit fought alongside Unit-01 against the Tenth Angel and was critically damaged. In Evangelion 3.0, the unit was repaired and piloted by Kaworu Nagisa and later by Asuka (who had been preserved in an Entry Plug for fourteen years).

Legacy

Unit-02 was Asuka’s identity made manifest. When she could not pilot it, she was nothing. When it was destroyed, she was broken. The unit’s fate mirrored her own—a descent from pride to ruin, and ultimately, a choice between despair and survival.
