New Mobile Report Gundam Wing Dual Story: G-Unit

New Mobile Report Gundam Wing Dual Story: G-Unit (新機動戦記ガンダムW DUAL STORY G-UNIT, Shin Kidō Senki Gundam W: Dual Story G-Unit), released in the United States as Mobile Suit Gundam: The Last Outpost, is a side story that takes place concurrently with the Mobile Suit Gundam Wing television series. The twelve-chapter manga, drawn by Kōichi Tokita, was printed in Comic BomBom between May 1997 and March 1998, and later sold in three volumes by Kodansha. The English version is available from Tokyopop.

Unlike most other Gundam Wing manga, G-Unit does not feature any of the anime characters or Gundams, with the exception of a few brief cameos. Instead, the manga introduces an entirely new cast of characters and mobile suits. The colony’s test pilots battle to survive as the special forces group OZ Prize fights MO-V in a deadly war of attrition to acquire the colony’s advanced mobile suits. This conflict, which begins as OZ begins its subtle conquest of space, drags on for months and eventually concludes at the same time as the Eve Wars.

Synopsis

The events outlined in G-Unit begin following the collapse of the United Earth Sphere Alliance government. The Organization of the Zodiac (OZ), which subsequently rose to power, sought to quickly build a support base amongst the space colonies. One of the colonies which pledged its support was MO-V, a backwater asteroid colony with about 100,000 residents, known mainly for its outdated Leo production facilities. Because mobile dolls like the Taurus were replacing the ageing Leo model, MO-V was largely ignored by OZ. However, a few people, notably Romefeller Foundation head Duke Dermail, knew about the colony’s secret project to develop high-powered mobile suits.

MO-V test pilots Odin and Odel Bernett tested two prototype mobile suits developed at the colony: Geminass Unit 01 and Geminass Unit 02. When reconnaissance mobile suits were detected spying on the colony, the Bernett brothers engaged them, discovering that OZ Prize—a special forces unit led by the “Stardust Knights”—had been assigned to seize MO-V’s Gundams. As battles intensified, Odel was captured and forced to pilot the captured Geminass 02 (rebuilt as Aesculapius) under the alias “Silver Clown,” whilst secretly working as a double agent to save the colony.

The conflict escalated when “Dark General of Destruction” Valder Farkill arrived, an OZ Specials ace who had recorded more kills against the UESA than anyone else. Farkill’s brutal tactics and overwhelming skill in the Hydra Gundam pushed MO-V to the brink. Dr Berg, the colony’s chief designer, played both sides to develop the “perfect weapon,” ultimately constructing Grand Chariot—a massive flagship with a planet-destroying main cannon.

The manga concluded with the Bernett brothers combining their damaged Gundams into a single functional unit to destroy Grand Chariot, preventing its automated rampage towards Earth. The timeline paralleled the main series, ending as news arrived of Treize Khushrenada’s death and Earth’s surrender to White Fang.

Story overview

Chapters 0-2: The Stardust Knights

The manga began with Odin and Odel Bernett testing the Geminass prototypes. When a reconnaissance Leo was detected, Odin disabled it, but the pilot self-detonated. Lady Une delivered a speech promising colonial cooperation, though OZ Prize—led by Captain Cage—had secret orders to seize MO-V’s Gundams.

The “Stardust Knights” (Roche Nattono, Kratz Silvy, and Broom Brooks) attacked in custom Leos. Odin and Odel defended the colony in their Geminass units. When Odel was hit by a hyper-mega launcher, he threw Odin to safety and was captured. His Geminass 02 was rebuilt as Gundam Aesculapius.

Chapters 3-4: Silver Clown

Odel, wearing a silver mask and adopting the alias “Silver Clown,” piloted Aesculapius under Dr Berg’s orders whilst secretly working to protect MO-V. Odin received upgrades to Geminass (now designated L.O. Booster), but recognised his brother’s fighting style when they engaged in combat. Roche, angered by being denied his “prey,” demanded the right to fight Odin personally.

Chapters 5-7: Valder Farkill

“Dark General of Destruction” Valder Farkill arrived, an OZ Specials ace whose kill count exceeded everyone else’s. Farkill massacred civilian shuttles evacuating MO-V, demonstrating the Hydra Gundam’s overwhelming power. Kratz Silvy defected to Farkill’s command, killing Roche and angering Broom Brooks, who was subsequently executed by Farkill.

Odel revealed “Operation Pandora”—accelerating a resource satellite towards MO-V. Farkill saw through the ruse and attacked, but Odin emerged in the new Griepe Gundam, a transformable mobile suit with a reflect shield that blocked Hydra’s beam cannons. The brothers returned to MO-V triumphantly, though 48 mobile dolls were en route as reinforcements.

Chapters 8-9: Luna and Soris Armonia

Luna Armonia infiltrated MO-V posing as a distressed pilot. She planted bombs and stole the Griepe, engaging Odin with her sister Soris in improved Mercurius and Vayeate mobile suits. Roche borrowed the L.O. Booster and rescued Odin. Dr Berg freed Odin and challenged him to test Griepe’s limits. Odin and Roche executed a tandem attack, defeating the sisters, but Farkill fired Grand Chariot’s main cannon in a test run, apparently sacrificing Luna and Soris.

Chapters 10-11: Final battle

Odin, Odel, and Roche launched an offensive against OZ Prize. Kratz piloted Gundam Burnlapius but pushed his PX System beyond its limits, causing his mind to crack and his mobile suit to explode. Valder Farkill arrived in Hydra Gundam for a final duel with Odin.

Dr Berg moved Grand Chariot closer to the colony but was stopped by Odel. Berg revealed he had arranged the shuttle crash that killed the Bernett brothers’ father to divert funding to his own research. Enraged, Odel crashed into Berg’s quarters in overdrive mode. Before dying, Berg activated his self-destruction program, which took complete control of Grand Chariot and set it on a collision course with Earth, programmed to fire its main cannon on all colonies it encountered.

Odin sent his PX System into overdrive to defeat Farkill, striking the death blow when Farkill was distracted by news of Treize Khushrenada’s death. With time running out, Odin, Odel, and Roche constructed a single working Gundam from three damaged units and destroyed Grand Chariot with their last shot.

Development

Conception

G-Unit was conceived as a side story running parallel to the main Gundam Wing television series, exploring what happened at a backwater colony whilst the main Gundam pilots fought their battles. Unlike other Wing manga, G-Unit featured entirely original characters and mobile suits, with only brief cameos from the main series’ Gundams.

The manga introduced the concept of the PX System—a performance enhancement system that placed extreme strain on pilots. This served as a precursor concept related to the ZERO System seen in the main series.

Production

Kōichi Tokita created the twelve-chapter manga for Comic BomBom, a monthly manga magazine published by Kodansha. The series ran from May 1997 to March 1998, collected into three volumes. Tokyopop licensed the manga for English publication under the title Mobile Suit Gundam: The Last Outpost.

Tokyopop’s English translation contained an erroneous claim that the story took place in the asteroid belt, when the colony was actually located in the Lagrange points like other space colonies. The translation also made naming changes, such as rendering “Silver Clown” as “Silver Crown” and “Aesculapius” as “Asklepios.”

Reception

G-Unit was notable for being one of the few Gundam Wing manga to feature an entirely original cast and storyline, diverging from the main series’ characters whilst maintaining continuity with the broader timeline. The manga explored themes of honour, sacrifice, and the morality of weapons development through Dr Berg’s character—a scientist who manipulated both sides to achieve his vision of the “perfect weapon.”

The PX System introduced in G-Unit became a recurring element in other After Colony works, representing an alternative to the ZERO System that enhanced performance through different means.
