Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Second Season (機動戦士ガンダム00 セカンドシーズン, Kidō Senshi Gandamu Daburu Ō Sekando Shīzun) is a 2008 television anime series produced by Sunrise and the direct sequel to Mobile Suit Gundam 00. Directed by Seiji Mizushima, the series continued the Anno Domini timeline, airing in Japan from 5 October 2008 to 29 March 2009, spanning 25 episodes.

Set in AD 2312, four years after the first season, the series follows Celestial Being’s return to active operations and their confrontation with A-LAWS and the Innovators. The season culminates in the Battle of Lagrange 1, where Celestial Being defeats the Innovators and their leader Ribbons Almark.

Plot

Synopsis

Following the events of the first season, the world had unified under the Earth Sphere Federation. However, the formation of A-LAWS as a special forces unit created new oppression, whilst the Innovators worked behind the scenes to control humanity’s evolution. Celestial Being, having survived their apparent defeat, returned in Operation Fallen Angels to resume their mission of armed intervention.

The series follows Setsuna F. Seiei and the returning Gundam Meisters in their new mobile suits—the GN-0000 Gundam 00, GN-006 Cherudim Gundam, GN-007 Arios Gundam, and GN-008 Seravee Gundam—as they confront A-LAWS and uncover the Innovators’ plot. The resistance organisation Katharon allies with Celestial Being against the oppressive forces.

Themes

The second season deepened themes of free will versus guided evolution, with the Innovators representing those who sought to impose their vision on humanity. Setsuna F. Seiei’s evolution into an Innovator who chose to protect human freedom rather than control it provided a counterpoint to Ribbons Almark’s ideology.
