Mobile Suit Gundam 00: Awakening of the Trailblazer

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 the Movie: A Wakening of the Trailblazer (劇場版 機動戦士ガンダム00 -A wakening of the Trailblazer-, Gekijōban Kidō Senshi Gandamu Daburu Ō) is a 2010 Japanese anime science fiction film directed by Seiji Mizushima and produced by Sunrise. The film premiered in Japan on 18 September 2010 and serves as the conclusion to the Mobile Suit Gundam 00 series. Set in Anno Domini 2314, two years after the events of Gundam 00 Second Season, the film is notable for being the first Gundam entry to feature extraterrestrial aliens as antagonists.

Synopsis

The film follows Celestial Being and Earth Sphere Federation forces as they confront the ELS (Extraterrestrial Living-metal Shape-shifters), an alien species that arrives at Earth following the reappearance of a Jupiter exploration vessel that had been lost decades earlier. The ELS are silicon-based lifeforms capable of assimilating technology and organic matter, posing an existential threat to humanity.

Setsuna F. Seiei, now a true Innovator, leads Celestial Being’s efforts to establish communication with the ELS and prevent mutual destruction. The Gundam Meisters—including Lockon Stratos, Allelujah Haptism, and Tieria Erde—confront the alien threat in their mobile suits, culminating in a resolution that alters humanity’s relationship with the ELS and Setsuna’s destiny.

Production and release

The film was written by Yōsuke Kuroda and features music by Kenji Kawai. It had a theatrical runtime of approximately 120 minutes and was released on Blu-ray and DVD in Japan on 25 December 2010. The film is available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
