Lagrange 1 Point
Lagrange point L1, site of the final battle between Celestial Being and the Innovators in Gundam 00 Season 2.
The Lagrange 1 Point (ラグランジュ1ポイント, Raguranju Ichi Pointo) was one of the five Earth-Moon Lagrange points, located approximately 326,000 kilometres from Earth in the direction of the Moon. In the Anno Domini timeline, Lagrange 1 Point was the site of the climactic final battle of Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Second Season, where Celestial Being confronted the Innovators and destroyed the Memento Mori superweapon.
Overview
Lagrange points are positions in space where the gravitational forces of two large bodies (in this case, Earth and the Moon) create regions of relative stability. The L1 point is located between Earth and the Moon, making it a strategic location for space facilities and operations.
In the Anno Domini era, Lagrange 1 Point served as the location of the Innovators’ base and the Memento Mori superweapon facility. The point’s strategic position made it an ideal location for the Innovators’ operations, as it provided a stable orbital position for their facilities whilst remaining relatively close to Earth.
Memento Mori
The Innovators positioned their Memento Mori superweapon facility near Lagrange 1 Point, utilising the stable orbital position to maintain the facility’s position. Memento Mori was a massive superweapon designed to eliminate resistance to the Innovators’ plans, representing a significant threat to humanity’s free will.
The facility’s location at Lagrange 1 Point made it difficult to approach and attack, as the Innovators could utilise the point’s position to their advantage. However, Celestial Being’s forces were able to reach the facility and engage the Innovators in the climactic Battle of Lagrange 1.
Battle of Lagrange 1
The Battle of Lagrange 1 was the final battle of Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Second Season, occurring at Lagrange 1 Point in AD 2312. The battle pitted Celestial Being against the Innovators, with both sides understanding that the outcome would determine humanity’s future.
During the battle, Celestial Being forces, led by the Ptolemaios, engaged Innovator mobile suits and worked to destroy Memento Mori. The battle culminated in the defeat of the Innovators, the death of Ribbons Almark, and the destruction of Memento Mori.
The battle also marked a significant moment in Setsuna F. Seiei’s character development, as he awakened as an Innovator whilst maintaining his commitment to humanity’s free will. This evolution demonstrated that true advancement came from humanity’s own capacity for growth, not from external control.
Strategic importance
Lagrange 1 Point’s strategic importance in the Anno Domini era was significant, as it served as the location of the Innovators’ base and their superweapon facility. The point’s position between Earth and the Moon made it an ideal location for operations that required proximity to both Earth and space-based facilities.
The point’s stability also made it valuable for long-term facilities, as structures positioned at Lagrange 1 Point could maintain their position with minimal station-keeping requirements. This stability made it an attractive location for the Innovators’ base and Memento Mori facility.
Aftermath
Following the Battle of Lagrange 1, Lagrange 1 Point returned to its natural state as a stable orbital position. The destruction of Memento Mori and the defeat of the Innovators removed the immediate threat, though the point’s strategic value remained for future operations.
The battle’s outcome demonstrated that humanity’s future would be determined by humanity itself, not by external forces seeking to guide or control human evolution. Lagrange 1 Point served as the site of this crucial moment in human history.
Behind the scenes
The Lagrange 1 Point is a real astronomical location, one of the five Earth-Moon Lagrange points discovered by mathematician Joseph-Louis Lagrange. The L1 point is located between Earth and the Moon, making it a unique position in the Earth-Moon system.
The use of Lagrange 1 Point as the location of the final battle demonstrates the scientific accuracy of the Anno Domini setting, as the point’s real-world properties make it a logical location for space facilities and operations.
