Gundam Reconguista in G III: Legacy of Space
Third film compilation of Gundam Reconguista in G, covering the journey into space and the truth behind the Universal Century Taboo.
Gundam Reconguista in G III: Legacy of Space (Gのレコンギスタ III 宇宙からの遺産, G no Rekonigisuta III: Uchū kara no Isan) was the third of five film compilations of Mobile Suit Gundam: Reconguista in G, directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino and produced by Sunrise. Released in Japanese theatres on 22 July 2021, the film covered the pivotal arc in which the Megafauna and its crew journey into space, confronting the suppressed history of the Universal Century Taboo.
Production
Released after a pandemic-delayed schedule, Legacy of Space continued Tomino’s film compilation project with significant new animation and revised storyboarding. The film’s title — “Legacy of Space” — referenced the central theme of the arc: the revelation that the civilisation of the Regild Century was built on the ruins of a far more advanced space-faring civilisation whose history had been deliberately suppressed.
The film included newly animated sequences depicting the Megafauna’s transit to the Moon and the encounters with Towasanga forces. These scenes benefited from the improved production values of the film format, allowing for more detailed space backgrounds and more dynamic mobile suit action than had been possible in the original television broadcast.
Story
The third film covered the Megafauna’s journey from Earth into space, where the crew encountered the lunar settlement of Towasanga and learned the truth about the history that had been hidden by the Universal Century Taboo. The revelation that the Capital Tower and its photon battery technology were remnants of a far more advanced civilisation challenged everything that Bellri Zenam and his companions had been taught.
The film depicted the complex political manoeuvring between Towasanga, led by Gusion Surugan, and the various Earth-based factions. The Amerian Army, represented by pilots like Luin Lee in his VGMM-Gb10 Gundam G-Lucifer, had its own objectives in space, creating a multi-layered conflict that tested the Megafauna’s independence and Bellri’s resolve.
