Gundam Reconguista in G I: Go! Core Fighter (Gのレコンギスタ I 行け!コア・ファイター, G no Rekonigisuta I: Ike! Koa Faitā) was the first of five film compilations of Mobile Suit Gundam: Reconguista in G, directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino and produced by Sunrise. Released in Japanese theatres on 25 October 2019, the film condensed and re-edited the early episodes of the television series with new animation, revised pacing, and updated audio.

Film compilation project

The Reconguista in G film compilation project was conceived by Yoshiyuki Tomino as a way to revisit and refine his 2014–2015 television series. Tomino had expressed dissatisfaction with aspects of the original broadcast, citing production constraints that had limited the quality of the television animation. The film compilation project allowed him to address these issues with new animation sequences, revised storyboarding, and improved audio mixing.

The five films were released between 2019 and 2022, each covering a portion of the 26-episode television series. The first film, Go! Core Fighter, focused on the opening arc of the story — the discovery of the YG-111 Gundam G-Self, Bellri Zenam’s emergence as its pilot, and the initial conflicts between the Capital Guard, the Pirate Corps, and the Amerian Army.

New content

Go! Core Fighter included newly animated sequences that were not present in the original television broadcast. These additions served to clarify plot points, enhance character development, and improve the visual quality of key scenes. The film also featured revised dialogue and updated sound mixing, reflecting Tomino’s desire to present the story in its best possible form.

Story

The film covered the early events of Reconguista in G, beginning with Bellri Zenam’s life as a Capital Guard cadet at the Capital Tower and his discovery of the YG-111 Gundam G-Self. It depicted the encounter between the Capital Guard and the Pirate Corps aboard the Megafauna, captained by Donyell Tos, and Bellri’s subsequent decision to join the pirates.

The film’s title, “Go! Core Fighter,” referenced the fighter craft that played a role in the G-Self’s configuration, echoing the naming tradition of earlier Gundam series while establishing its own identity within the Regild Century timeline.
