XXXG-01SR Gundam Sandrock
Quatre's desert warrior armed with twin heat shotels.
The XXXG-01SR Gundam Sandrock was a close-quarters combat Gundam-type mobile suit deployed during Operation Meteor in After Colony 195. One of five Gundam units sent to Earth by the space colonies, it was piloted by Quatre Raberba Winner. Designed for desert operations and as a commander unit, it featured strong armor and advanced communication systems, excelling in melee combat with its distinctive curved heat shotels.
Overview
The Gundam Sandrock was constructed by Instructor H in the L4 Colony Cluster under financial support from the Winner family. Designed for operations on land, especially in desert environments, it possessed high combat capabilities and excelled in melee combat with armor more robust than the other Gundams’. Its distinctive feature was the use of heat-radiating curved blades rather than beam weapons, making it the only one of the original five Gundams to feature no beam weapons.
The mobile suit was designed as a commander unit, serving as the core of the command system for both the Maganac Corps and the five Gundams. It featured advanced communication and information analysis systems to coordinate allied forces. A sub-camera that functioned in sandstorms was installed on the forehead, enabling operations in the harsh desert conditions where the mobile suit excelled.
The Sandrock gained notoriety for an incident in which the mobile suit appeared to act autonomously, opening its cockpit to eject its pilot before self-destructing whilst walking toward enemy forces—behavior suggesting an advanced artificial intelligence system.
Design
Concept and development
When the five scientists who designed the XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero in AC 180 went their separate ways, each took copies of the plans for their original Gundam design. Instructor H, who went into hiding in the L4 Colony Cluster, designed and built the XXXG-01SR Gundam Sandrock based on their original plan. The Gundam Sandrock was specifically designed for Quatre Raberba Winner, who had no intention of aiding Operation Meteor’s colony drop operation.
Against his pacifist father’s wishes, Quatre took the Sandrock to Earth to meet up with the Maganac Corps in their fight against OZ and the oppressive United Earth Sphere Alliance. Unlike the other pilots, Quatre rejected the genocidal aspects of Operation Meteor and resolved to use the Sandrock only against military targets.
Like the other Operation Meteor Gundams, the Sandrock was constructed from Gundanium alloy, with particularly strong armor that exceeded the defensive capabilities of the other Gundams. This gave the Sandrock exceptional survivability in close-quarters combat.
Technical features
The Gundam Sandrock’s design emphasized close-quarters combat capability and commander functionality. As a commander unit, it featured advanced communication and information analysis systems superior to the other Operation Meteor Gundams, allowing it to coordinate the Maganac Corps and serve as a command hub for the five Gundams.
The mobile suit’s distinctive feature was its environmental adaptation for desert warfare. A sub-camera installed on the forehead functioned in sandstorms, allowing the Sandrock to maintain full operational capability in conditions that would blind standard mobile suits. This specialization made it particularly effective in desert regions.
The Sandrock’s armor was notably more robust than the other Gundams’, providing enhanced protection in melee combat. This defensive advantage complemented its close-range fighting style.
The cockpit was a spherical capsule located in the torso with shock mitigation functions. Unusually, technical specifications glimpsed during the series suggested the presence of an “alice system MK2”—an apparent reference to autonomous artificial intelligence systems. This was consistent with the mobile suit’s demonstrated ability to act independently during its self-destruct sequence.
Armament
Heat Shotels
These heat-radiating curved blades were the Gundam Sandrock’s main weapons. With one in each hand, the Sandrock could cut an enemy mobile suit in half simultaneously. The heat shotels could also be used as throwing weapons when required. When not in use, they were mounted on the backpack of the Sandrock. The distinctive curved shape maximized cutting power whilst the heat emission weakened enemy armor before physical contact.
Cross Crusher
This arm-mounted crushing weapon was formed by combining the Gundam Sandrock’s shield, backpack, and heat shotels. It could capture an enemy mobile suit between the shotels and then cut them in half. The Cross Crusher represented the mobile suit’s maximum close-range attack capability, combining multiple systems into a single devastating weapon.
Shield
Designed with a snakehead motif, the shield featured two claws as “fangs” and two shield flashers as “eyes”. The shield possessed anti-beam coating for defense against beam weapons. The shield flashers could release a blinding flash to confuse enemies, providing both offensive and defensive utility. The shield was a multi-purpose weapon that could also be incorporated into the Cross Crusher formation.
Vulcan Guns
A pair of shell-firing armaments built into the head. Whilst possessing low offensive power, they were used to restrict enemy movement and lay down suppressive fire due to their rapid-fire capability. They served as the mobile suit’s anti-personnel and light-armor weapons.
Homing Missiles
A small automatic tracking missile stored in both shoulders, representing the Sandrock’s sole long-range weaponry. These missiles provided limited ranged capability, though the mobile suit was primarily designed for close-quarters combat.
Diffuser Cloth
An anti-beam cloak equipped on the Gundam Sandrock during battles in the Sanc Kingdom in the Comic BonBon manga version of Gundam Wing. This optional equipment enhanced the mobile suit’s defensive capabilities against beam weapons.
Special equipment
Self-destruct system
The Gundam Sandrock was built with a self-destruct system that the pilot could activate via a remote detonator in the cockpit. The system was designed to overload the mobile suit’s power systems and had sufficient explosive power to destroy several city blocks. Unlike the other Gundams’ systems, the Sandrock’s self-destruct system opened the cockpit door after activation, and once the pilot had escaped, the Sandrock was programmed to move forward a certain distance to ensure the pilot was not caught in the explosion—a unique safety feature suggesting advanced autonomous capabilities.
Shield Flashers
Mounted on the shield as the “eyes” of the snakehead design, these devices could release a blinding flash to confuse and disorient enemy pilots. They provided both offensive capability and defensive distraction.
Sub-camera
A specialized camera installed on the forehead that functioned in sandstorms, enabling the Sandrock to maintain full visual capability in desert environments where standard sensors would be rendered useless.
Operational history
Operation Meteor
The Gundam Sandrock was sent to Earth with Quatre Raberba Winner to commence Operation Meteor in AC 195. However, Quatre rejected the operation’s colony drop plans and resolved to use the Sandrock only against OZ and United Earth Sphere Alliance military targets, sparing civilians.
On arrival at Earth on 7 April, the Sandrock reunited with the Maganac Corps, serving as their command unit. The mobile suit participated in numerous desert operations, where its specialized systems and heat shotels proved devastatingly effective against OZ forces. The Sandrock’s role as a commander unit enabled effective coordination of the Maganac Corps’ forty mobile suits.
Self-destruction and recovery
As OZ became more aggressive in space, the five Gundam pilots realized they would have to return to defend the colonies. Quatre Raberba Winner joined up with Duo Maxwell and Chang Wufei and attacked a military spaceport in Singapore. To create a diversion facilitating his allies’ escape, Quatre decided to sacrifice the Sandrock along with himself—a decision he did not take lightly, as he had come to see his mobile suit almost as a friend.
However, the Sandrock’s cockpit opened of its own accord, as if encouraging its pilot to continue without it. After Quatre exited the mobile suit, it walked off by itself into the enemy forces before self-destructing, decimating the enemy forces and allowing Duo and Wufei to escape with their Gundams. This incident suggested the presence of an autonomous artificial intelligence system, later supported by technical specification displays that referenced an “alice system MK2”.
OZ recovered the Sandrock’s remains but made no effort to repair the machine. Eventually, Sally Po conducted a solo mission to destroy what was left of the Gundam, infiltrating the hangar where the remains were stored and covering them with explosive charges. As fate would have it, Sally discovered the Sandrock at the same time as the Maganac Corps, briefly engaging them before detonating the charges. Surprisingly, even in its damaged state, the Sandrock survived the explosions—a testament to its superior armor. After escaping from OZ forces, Sally conceded the Sandrock’s remains to the Maganac Corps, hoping they would reunite the damaged Gundam with its pilot someday.
Restoration and space deployment
Quatre Raberba Winner eventually returned to Earth, where he later learned the Maganac Corps had found and restored the Sandrock. The young pilot journeyed alone through the desert hoping to retrieve his Gundam, only to discover the Maganac Corps’ headquarters under attack by OZ. Quatre located the Sandrock in the nick of time and led the Maganac Corps to victory.
Realizing the battle had moved into space and joined by former Sanc Kingdom soldier Lucrezia Noin, Quatre once again left Earth, this time bringing the Sandrock with him. As the Sandrock had been constructed for ground warfare, it was unsuitable for combat in outer space. Despite this, Quatre took the Sandrock into numerous battles, where despite its decreased effectiveness, it managed to hold out until they made contact with the spaceship Peacemillion. Howard ordered the Sandrock to be refitted for outer space combat, resulting in the XXXG-01SR2 Gundam Sandrock Custom.
Production
Design and development
The Gundam Sandrock was designed by Okawara Kunio for the 1995 anime series Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. Initially, the design followed the nationality trend from Mobile Fighter G Gundam, with the Gundam Sandrock’s design intended to be Arabian, using a large round shield similar to the one used by the XXXG-01S Shenlong Gundam.
The final design emphasized Middle Eastern aesthetics with the distinctive snakehead shield motif and curved shotel weapons, reflecting the mobile suit’s desert combat specialization and its pilot’s Arabian heritage.
Reception
The Gundam Sandrock became popular amongst fans for its distinctive design and the emotional bond between pilot and machine demonstrated during its autonomous self-destruct sequence. The mobile suit has been featured extensively in model kit releases, including multiple High Grade versions from Bandai, with a new HGAC version released in 2019.
A notable trivia is that the Sandrock is the only one of the original five to have two letters at the end of its model number (SR), likely to avoid confusion with the Shenlong Gundam’s “S” designation. Additionally, the original 1/144 scale model kit came packaged with a beam machine gun that the Sandrock was not armed with until its refit into the Sandrock Custom, though this weapon appeared as an attack in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Duel.
