Calamity War

The Calamity War (厄祭戦, Yakusai Sen) was a catastrophic interplanetary conflict in the Post Disaster backstory that caused enormous casualties and led to the creation of the 72 Gundam Frames and the founding of Gjallarhorn. It ended with the Vingolf Proclamation in PD 001, which established the Post Disaster calendar and Gjallarhorn’s role as peacekeeper.

Overview

The war was fought against autonomous mobile armors that threatened human civilisation. Humanity developed 72 Gundam Frames—mobile suits with dual Ahab Reactors and compatibility with the Alaya-Vijnana System—to combat them. Agna Garm, pilot of the ASW-G-01 Gundam Bael, was among the heroes who ended the conflict and later helped establish Gjallarhorn. The war’s legacy includes the Gundam Frames (such as the ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos), Dainsleif weapons that damaged the Moon, and the political order that dominates the Iron-Blooded Orphans era.

Legacy

The Calamity War is frequently referenced in Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans as the origin of Gjallarhorn’s authority, the rarity of Gundam Frames, and the taboo around weapons like the Dainsleif. Mars and other colonies were later colonised under treaties signed in the war’s aftermath, leading to the economic and political tensions of PD 323.
