ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam

The ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam (ストライクフリーダムガンダム, Sutoraiku Furīdamu Gandamu) was a prototype mobile suit developed by ZAFT and piloted by Kira Yamato in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. It was the successor to the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam, supplied to Kira by Lacus Clyne’s faction (the network sometimes called Terminal) so he could oppose Gilbert Durandal’s Destiny Plan and support the Three Ships Alliance. The Strike Freedom used Variable Phase Shift Armor and an ultracompact hyper-deuterion nuclear reactor (with Neutron Jammer Canceller), and introduced the Super DRAGOON system—wireless remote weapon pods derived from the DRAGOON System—allowing Kira to engage multiple targets at long range. Its “full burst” mode combined the chest beam cannon with all DRAGOONs and twin beam rifle for maximum firepower.

History

Development and deployment

ZAFT developed the Strike Freedom as part of its Second Stage Series. The unit was acquired by Terminal and given to Kira when he rejoined the fight. Kira operated it from the Eternal and alongside the Archangel and Kusanagi, facing ZAFT’s Destiny Gundam and Impulse Gundam in the final phase of the Second Alliance-PLANT War.

Design

The Strike Freedom retained the Freedom’s emphasis on high mobility and multi-target engagement whilst adding DRAGOONs and improved beam armament. The wing-mounted Super DRAGOONs could operate independently for all-range attacks, and the twin beam rifle and belly cannon gave strong sustained fire.

Armaments

  • Super DRAGOON – Eight wireless beam weapon pods (wing-mounted)
  • MGX-2235 “Callidus” – Multi-phase beam cannon (torso)
  • MA-M21G – Twin beam rifle (combined or split)
  • MA-M02G “Super Lacerta” – Beam sabres
  • MX2200 – Beam shield generators (arms)
  • MMI-GAU26 – CIWS
