The Eternal (エターナル, Etānaru) was a PLANT mobile suit carrier that served as the flagship for Lacus Clyne and the Three Ships Alliance during the First Alliance-PLANT War in Cosmic Era 71. The vessel played a crucial role in supporting the Alliance’s operations and served as a base for the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam and ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam.

History

Development and deployment

The Eternal was developed by the PLANTs as a mobile suit carrier designed to support advanced mobile suit operations. The vessel was equipped with facilities for maintaining and deploying mobile suits, making it an essential support ship for high-performance units like the Freedom and Justice Gundams.

The Eternal became associated with Lacus Clyne, the PLANT pop idol and pacifist leader, who used the vessel as her flagship. Lacus’s connection to the Eternal reflected her role as a leader of the pacifist movement within the PLANTs and her commitment to ending the war.

Three Ships Alliance

The Eternal became part of the Three Ships Alliance, a neutral coalition comprising the Archangel, the Eternal, and the Kusanagi. This alliance sought to end the war through intervention rather than victory, working to protect civilians and de-escalate conflicts.

As part of the Three Ships Alliance, the Eternal served as a base of operations for the Freedom and Justice Gundams, supporting their intervention operations. The vessel’s role in the alliance demonstrated its importance as a support ship for advanced mobile suits and as a symbol of the pacifist movement.

Design

The Eternal featured a design optimised for mobile suit support operations. The vessel’s large hangar bays could accommodate multiple mobile suits, including the advanced Freedom and Justice Gundams. The ship’s facilities included maintenance and repair capabilities, making it essential for supporting high-performance mobile suits.

The Eternal’s design emphasised its role as a support vessel, with extensive hangar and maintenance facilities taking priority over heavy armament. The vessel’s appearance reflected its association with Lacus Clyne and the pacifist movement, serving as a symbol of hope and peace.

Armaments

The Eternal was equipped with defensive weapons to protect itself and its mobile suits:

Beam cannons

The Eternal featured multiple beam cannons for defensive purposes, providing protection against enemy attacks. These weapons were sufficient for self-defence but the vessel relied primarily on its mobile suits for offensive capabilities.
