ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam

The ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam (インパルスガンダム, Inparusu Gandamu) was a prototype modular mobile suit developed by ZAFT for Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. First deployed on 2 October CE 73 at the Battle at Armory One, it was piloted by Shinn Asuka and later by Lunamaria Hawke. The Impulse was the flagship unit of ZAFT’s Second Stage Series and used a unique construction: the YFX-M56 Core Splendor fighter formed the cockpit and core block, which docked with the Chest Flyer and Leg Flyer to form the full mobile suit. Interchangeable Silhouette packs (Force, Sword, Blast) allowed the Impulse to change role in combat via the Silhouette Flyer support craft, and it was powered by a deuterion beam energy supply system for mid-battle recharging from the battleship Minerva.

History

Development and deployment

ZAFT developed the Impulse as part of its Second Stage Series, which emphasised modularity and Variable Phase Shift Armor (VPS). The Core Splendor allowed the pilot to eject and re-dock with the flyers, and the Silhouette Flyer delivered replacement packs so the unit could switch configuration without returning to base. Shinn Asuka was assigned the Impulse aboard the Minerva and used it through most of the Second Alliance-PLANT War until he was given the ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam.

Silhouette packs

  • Force Silhouette – General-purpose pack with beam rifle, shield, and balanced mobility; default configuration.
  • Sword Silhouette – Close-combat pack with large sword and extra thrusters.
  • Blast Silhouette – Long-range pack with heavy cannon and artillery focus.

Design

The Impulse stood 17.76 metres tall and used VPS armour that changed colour with the attached Silhouette. Its reliance on deuterion recharge from the Minerva limited long-range independence but allowed sustained operations when supported by the ship.
