Saji Crossroad
Civilian caught in the conflict who eventually becomes a mobile suit pilot.
Saji Crossroad (沙慈・クロスロード, Saji Kurosurōdo) was a civilian character in Mobile Suit Gundam 00 who became caught in the conflict between Celestial Being and the world’s military forces. Initially a normal student living in the orbital elevator, Saji’s life was dramatically changed by the war, eventually leading him to become involved with Celestial Being and pilot mobile suits himself.
Biography
Early life
Saji was born in Japan and lived in one of the orbital elevators, leading a normal life as a student. He had a girlfriend, Louise Halevy, and worked part-time to support his studies. Saji’s peaceful life was interrupted when Celestial Being began its armed interventions, as the conflict directly affected his home and family.
Mobile Suit Gundam 00
Saji’s life was changed when the orbital elevator where he lived was attacked during Celestial Being’s armed interventions. His sister, Kinue Crossroad, was killed during the conflict, and Louise lost her family as well. These losses left Saji struggling to understand the conflict and his place in it.
Saji eventually found work aboard the Ptolemaios as an engineer, becoming involved with Celestial Being despite his initial reluctance. His experiences with the organisation and the loss of his loved ones forced him to confront the realities of war and his own role in the conflict.
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Second Season
In the second season, Saji became a mobile suit pilot, serving aboard the Ptolemaios II and piloting units like the GNX-603T GN-X. His transformation from civilian to pilot reflected his growing understanding of the conflict and his determination to make a difference.
Saji’s relationship with Louise became complicated as she became involved with the A-LAWS, an organisation that opposed Celestial Being. Their conflicting allegiances created tension between them, though they remained connected by their shared experiences and loss.
Personality
Saji was initially characterised by his reluctance to become involved in conflict, preferring to lead a peaceful civilian life. However, the loss of his sister and his experiences with war forced him to confront the realities of armed conflict and his own responsibility to act.
Saji’s personality evolved throughout the series as he became more involved with Celestial Being and eventually became a pilot himself. His growth reflected the series’ exploration of how ordinary people are affected by war and how they respond to conflict.
Skills & abilities
As a civilian, Saji initially had no combat skills or piloting experience. However, after joining Celestial Being and becoming involved with the organisation’s operations, he developed engineering skills that allowed him to work aboard the Ptolemaios.
Saji eventually became a mobile suit pilot, demonstrating competence in combat despite his lack of formal military training. His piloting abilities improved throughout the second season as he gained experience and confidence.
Relationships
Louise Halevy
Saji’s relationship with Louise was central to his character arc. The two were in a romantic relationship before the conflict began, but their lives were torn apart by war. Louise’s loss of her family and Saji’s loss of his sister created distance between them, and their eventual involvement with opposing sides further complicated their relationship.
Kinue Crossroad
Saji’s sister, Kinue, was killed during the conflict, and her death had a profound impact on Saji. Her loss motivated him to become involved with Celestial Being and to understand the conflict that had taken her life.
Celestial Being crew
Saji developed relationships with the members of the Ptolemaios crew, particularly Feldt Grace, with whom he formed a close bond. These relationships helped him integrate into the organisation and find purpose in the conflict.
