NZ-999 Neo Zeong

The NZ-999 Neo Zeong was a massive attack use mobile armor developed by Neo Zeon for Full Frontal’s MSN-06S Sinanju.

The “NZ” in the model code stood for “Neo Zeon”, indicating it was developed by that faction, and the “999” denoted it was the 999th design in the NZ series. The Neo Zeong’s name is derived from Neo Zeon and the MSN-02 Zeong, paying homage to Char Aznable’s final mobile suit from the One Year War.

History

The NZ-999 Neo Zeong was developed as an exclusive machine for Full Frontal, the leader of the Sleeves faction of Neo Zeon. It consisted of the MSN-06S Sinanju being carried in a huge 116-metre tall hull unit. This massive base attack mobile armor represented the final machine created by Neo Zeon and the culmination of their mobile armor development.

At 116 metres tall, the Neo Zeong was so massive that when completed it was stored outside of Full Frontal’s flagship Rewloola. The mobile armor was designed to provide Full Frontal with overwhelming firepower and defensive capability for the final confrontation with the Earth Federation Forces.

The Neo Zeong was fielded during the last battle of the Laplace Incident in UC 0096. Its overwhelming power allowed Full Frontal to hold off both Banagher Links’ RX-0 Unicorn Gundam and Riddhe Marcenas’ RX-0[N] Gundam Unicorn 02 Banshee Norn.

After a prolonged fight, Full Frontal used a psycho field to take Banagher on a tour of historical events from the Universal Century to show Banagher the futility of his actions. The journey concluded with the end of time when the universe was an empty void. Full Frontal felt that any action was futile since the universe would eventually end, and a backlash of Psycho-Frame energy caused both the Neo Zeong and Sinanju to disintegrate, leaving only the cockpit pod. Full Frontal faded away when he saw the spirits of Lalah Sune and Amuro Ray.

Design

The NZ-999 Neo Zeong was a massive mobile armor that used the MSN-06S Sinanju as its control unit. Rather than traditional docking, it would be more appropriate to say that it carries the Sinanju, and its impressive presence turns the Red Comet’s machine from a humanoid type into a monster with overwhelming power.

The Neo Zeong was capable of very high speed movement despite its massive size thanks to the use of two large sturm boosters mounted at the bottom. These combination propellant tank and booster units granted better mobility and cruising range. Should the boosters be destroyed, the Neo Zeong could rely on the skirt armor’s own thrusters for mobility.

Four I-field generators mounted on the waist provided the Neo Zeong with a nearly impenetrable defense against beam weapons. The mobile armor also featured an enhanced Psycho-Frame cockpit frame, allowing Full Frontal to pilot the unit through his mask without being physically present in the cockpit.

The Neo Zeong incorporated advanced psycommu technology throughout its design, with the Psycho-Frame construction enabling direct mental interface with the massive armor’s systems. Many details about the Neo Zeong’s most advanced systems remain unclear, and it is rumoured that Full Frontal, possessed by Char Aznable’s spirit, designed key elements with knowledge from a higher plane of existence.

Armaments

The Neo Zeong’s standard weapons were multiple mega particle cannons for overwhelming ranged firepower, wired funnel bits for all-range attacks, and the revolutionary psycho-shard generators.

60 mm vulcan guns

Mounted in the head of the Sinanju, the core unit of the Neo Zeong, the pair of vulcan guns are not very powerful and typically unable to penetrate mobile suit armor, but they are useful in restricting enemy movements, intercepting missiles and the likes. These weapons retained their role from the Sinanju’s original armament.

Mega particle cannons

The Neo Zeong mounted six mega particle cannons on its shoulders, four in front and two in the back. These cannons could fire either scatter beams for area suppression or focused beams for precision strikes. The latter was capable of punching a hole through a colony’s wall, demonstrating the massive firepower at the Neo Zeong’s disposal.

Large-caliber high mega particle cannon

Mounted on the Neo Zeong’s waist, this cannon had a limited rate of fire but the highest output of all the unit’s ranged beam weaponry. This weapon provided the mobile armor with its most devastating single-shot capability, capable of destroying multiple mobile suits or severely damaging capital ships.

Psycho-shard generators

The Psycho Shard Generator was a new, large psycommu armament and also the Neo Zeong’s most powerful weapon. The generators were stored within the sides of the skirt armor and in the large shoulder thruster units. Once deployed, they created a massive ring of golden hexagonal crystals, the Psycho Shards, behind the machine’s back. The Psycho Shards then generated a massive psycho field, which was said to be capable of actualizing the pilot’s thoughts, and this resulted in the destruction of the Unicorn and Banshee’s weapons.

Wired funnel bits

The two primary arms of the Neo Zeong had five large wired funnel bits on the tip of each arm, and when they were destroyed, a spare set stored within the arms could be deployed as replacements. Each of the four secondary arms also mounted wired funnel bits. These psycommu-guided weapons could operate at long range and even hijack other enemy mobile suits, turning them against one another.

Sinanju armaments

As the control unit, the MSN-06S Sinanju retained access to all of its standard armaments when docked with the Neo Zeong. This included beam sabers for close combat, rocket bazookas stored in the Neo Zeong’s shoulder-mounted weapon containers, a shield with integrated beam axes that could combine to form a beam naginata, and various other weapons from the Sinanju’s arsenal.

Variants

NZ-999 II Neo Zeong

In UC 0097, a second unit built from spare parts was fielded in combat by Zoltan Akkanen of the Republic of Zeon. This variant featured a gray colour scheme to match the MSN-06S-2 Sinanju Stein and incorporated wire-guided functions in its arms.

Behind the scenes

Hajime Katoki was the original mechanical designer for the NZ-999 Neo Zeong.

The unit fires its rocket bazookas in a similar manner to the RX-78GP03 Gundam “Dendrobium”. While the Neo Zeong is the largest Zeon mobile armor seen in animation thus far, it is still dwarfed by the 218.30 metre long AMA-100 Z’od-iacok.

Full Frontal’s ability to control the Neo Zeong from outside the cockpit may be a reference to Four Murasame’s remote operation of the MRX-009 Psycho Gundam.

Although developed exclusively for Full Frontal, the Neo Zeong is compatible with mobile suits other than the Sinanju, as shown in the novel Mobile Suit Gundam UC: Phoenix Hunting, where a MSN-03 Jagd Doga is docked with the unit instead.
