MSN-06S-2 Sinanju Stein
Prototype Newtype-use mobile suit developed by Anaheim Electronics.
The MSN-06S-2 Sinanju Stein was a prototype Newtype-use mobile suit developed by Anaheim Electronics as part of the Earth Federation’s UC Project. It was the second of two Sinanju Stein units and was piloted by Zoltan Akkanen during Operation Phoenix Hunt in UC 0097.
The “MSN” in the model code indicated it was a Mobile Suit Neo design, “06S” denoted it was derived from the original Sinanju Stein, and “2” designated it as the second unit. Like its predecessor, “Stein” means “stone” in German and Norwegian, referencing it being a foundation mobile suit.
History
The MSN-06S-2 Sinanju Stein was developed to test the durability and follow-up capabilities of the psychoframe. Two units of the mobile suit, referred to using the development code “Stein 01”, were created by Anaheim Electronics as testbeds for the full psychoframe implementation intended for the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam.
In UC 0094, two units of Sinanju Stein were transported in the Earth Federation’s Clop-class cruiser Unkai when they were seized by the Sleeves as part of a secret deal between Anaheim Electronics, high-ranking Earth Federation officials, and Neo Zeon remnants. One unit was remodelled as the MSN-06S Sinanju and used as the flagship mobile suit of the organisation, but was lost during the events of the Laplace Incident.
In UC 0097, the other unit, the MSN-06S-2 Sinanju Stein, was seen in the battlefield during the fight over the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 03 Phenex, which had flown into the Earth Sphere. The Republic of Zeon sought out the Phenex and gave the remaining Sinanju Stein to Cyber-Newtype Zoltan Akkanen as a means to intervene in Operation Phoenix Hunt.
Zoltan’s Sinanju Stein could dock with the NZ-999 II Neo Zeong, a mobile armour built from the spare parts of Full Frontal’s original Neo Zeong. The mobile suit used the fury of its pilot as a source of energy to face the Phenex and RX-9 Narrative Gundam.
Design
The MSN-06S-2 Sinanju Stein retained the basic design philosophy of the original Sinanju Stein, serving as a testbed for psychoframe technology. However, certain aspects of its design were updated for the Narrative version, including decorations on the chest and forearms and the addition of a pair of beam axes.
Despite having a silhouette reminiscent of Zeon mobile suits, its exterior armour consisted of straight lines, an iconic feature of Earth Federation mobile suits. The dark grey colour scheme distinguished it from other variants in the series.
The backpack had six thruster nozzles capable of generating explosive propulsion, and the propellant tanks were the same size as those used by Full Frontal’s red Sinanju. This provided the mobile suit with extended operational range and enhanced manoeuvrability.
The MSN-06S-2 had an ultracompact Minovsky power plant that generated an output of 3,240 kW. It had rocket thrusters that generated 128,600 kg of total thrust. The mobile suit had a standard cockpit in its torso with a panoramic monitor and linear seat.
The mobile suit was equipped with a psycommu system and the intention automatic system, which allowed the pilot’s thoughts to directly control the mobile suit through the psychoframe’s sensitivity to thought-waves.
Armaments
The MSN-06S-2 Sinanju Stein’s armaments included vulcan guns, beam sabers, a beam rifle and a shield that featured a beam cannon and missiles. Additionally, it was equipped with a beam naginata for extended melee combat.
60 mm vulcan guns
Mounted in the head, the pair of vulcan guns were primarily used against lightly armoured targets such as tanks and small aircraft. While not very powerful against mobile suit armour, they were effective for intercepting missiles and rockets, destroying sensors, and providing close-range defensive fire.
Beam sabers
The MSN-06S-2 carried two beam sabers stored in recharge racks in the forearms and hand-carried in use. The beam sabers used an I-field to contain Minovsky particles within the shape of a blade. Minovsky particles broke down matter at a molecular level, meaning the beam saber could cut through almost any material.
Beam rifle
The beam rifle served as the MSN-06S-2’s primary ranged weapon. It drew its rounds from energy packs (E-packs), clips of charged Minovsky particles. The rifle could be combined with the bazooka attachment for increased firepower when needed.
Shield
The shield was mounted on the left forearm and featured a beam cannon and four missiles. This multi-purpose defensive system provided both protection and offensive capabilities. The shield could also store additional equipment and serve as a weapon mounting point.
Bazooka
The bazooka was stored on the underside of the shield and could be mounted on the beam rifle in use. This provided the mobile suit with heavy assault capabilities against armoured targets and fortifications.
Beam naginata
A large melee weapon which had beam blade generators on both ends. It was a weapon designated specifically for the Sinanju Stein and could be used as an extended-reach melee weapon. The beam naginata was a combination of two modified beam axes from the original Sinanju, with their grips extended for longer reach. It could be disconnected into two separate weapons at the grip section when needed.
Propellant tanks
Mounted on the back, the pair of tanks increased the amount of fuel the suit could carry, thus increasing its operational flight time. When the fuel was depleted, the tanks could be ejected to decrease mass. The propellant tanks used by the MSN-06S-2 were longer than those of the original MSN-06S Sinanju Stein and were similar to those utilised by the MSN-06S Sinanju.

Behind the scenes
Hajime Katoki was the original mechanical designer. The design was updated to match the specifications for the Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative film, incorporating new decorations and equipment compared to the original Sinanju Stein.
The MSN-06S-2 first appeared bearing the Sleeves marking in Mobile Suit Gundam UC: A Phantom World. The unit bore the “10S” marking used by Full Frontal’s unit, implying that it was the same unit that would become the MSN-06S Sinanju.
Various sections of the Ver.Ka model kit edition were updated under Katoki’s supervision to match the specifications for the Narrative film, including the addition of the beam naginata and updated colour scheme.
