MSN-03 Jagd Doga

The MSN-03 Jagd Doga was a prototype Newtype-use mobile suit developed by Anaheim Electronics for Neo Zeon during the Second Neo Zeon War.

The “M” in the model code indicated it was developed by a manufacturer other than the Earth Federation, the “S” indicated it was for space use, and the “N” meant it was for Newtype use. The “03” denoted it was the third design in this particular line. The code name “Jagd” comes from the German word for “hunt”.

History

The MSN-03 Jagd Doga was developed by Anaheim Electronics as a special breed of mobile suit built by Neo Zeon for use by its Newtype soldiers, seeing limited deployment during the Second Neo Zeon War of UC 0093. Based on the frame of the mass-produced AMS-119 Geara Doga, the Jagd Doga was designed using data from the evaluation tests of the AMS-120X Geara Doga Psycommu System Test Type and the AMS-119N Röte Doga.

Only two units were confirmed built and deployed: one unit, painted in dark blue with a large antenna on the head, was piloted by Cyber Newtype Gyunei Guss, and was typically armed with a beam assault rifle for mid- and short-range combat; the second unit, painted red, was piloted by newly-discovered Newtype youth Quess Paraya, and was typically armed with a large, mega Gatling beam gun for heavy firepower.

During the war, both units saw action against Earth Federation forces. Gyunei fought three times against Amuro Ray, who piloted the RGZ-91 Re-GZ during the first fight and the RX-93 Nu Gundam in subsequent fights. During the third battle, Gyunei was killed as Amuro destroyed his Jagd Doga. Quess’ Jagd Doga was damaged during a battle, and she later switched to the NZ-333 Alpha Azieru.

In UC 0096, Quess’ Jagd Doga was repaired and modified by the Sleeves for their own use. A Geara Doga’s right arm served as a replacement for the original that was lost during the Second Neo Zeon War. However, the Jagd Doga also lost its right shoulder’s funnel pod shield due to this replacement. Other modifications include a Geara Doga’s backpack replacing its original one, two funnels for its remaining funnel pod shield, and it was repainted yellow and dark grey and given the personal markings of units used by the Sleeves.

Design

Based on the AMS-119 Geara Doga’s frame, the Jagd Doga was actually quite different in its armor’s outward appearance. The Jagd Doga’s sensors, thrusters, and nuclear reactor have also been significantly improved compared to those on Geara Doga. As a result, it has greater speed and mobility, and more power for its weapons and other systems. In terms of performance, the Jagd Doga was the second most powerful mobile suit in the Newborn Neo Zeon’s arsenal, second only to the MSN-04 Sazabi.

The mobile suit was equipped with Gundarium alloy armour and powered by a Minovsky type ultracompact fusion reactor rated at 3,340 kW. It featured a standard cockpit in its torso with panoramic monitor and linear seat. The Jagd Doga had an impressive sensor range of 20,500 metres.

It has a Psycho-Frame cockpit for controlling the six funnels stored on its shoulder-mounted funnel pod shields. Armed with six funnel weapons and equipped with a psycommu system to control them, the Jagd Doga was basically an improved Geara Doga outfitted for Newtype use.

Armaments

The Jagd Doga’s standard weapons varied depending on the pilot and mission requirements, typically featuring a beam assault rifle or mega Gatling gun for ranged combat, and a beam saber for melee engagement.

Beam assault rifle

A handheld weapon used by Gyunei Guss’s Jagd Doga, it is a beam rifle that can be fired in full-auto or semi-auto mode. Powered by a rechargeable energy cap, it is lighter and easier to wield than a standard beam rifle.

Mega Gatling gun

The mega Gatling beam gun was the primary weapon of Quess Paraya’s Jagd Doga, providing heavy firepower for sustained combat. This weapon was powered by rechargeable energy caps and offered devastating firepower against enemy mobile suits.

Beam saber with attached heat knife

The Jagd Doga was equipped with a beam saber with attached heat knife, stored in recharge rack in right hip armor, hand-carried in use. The beam saber used an I-field to contain Minovsky particles within the shape of a blade, capable of cutting through almost any material.

Missiles

The mobile suit carried 6 missiles, mounted inside shoulder armor shields. These provided additional firepower and could be used for both anti-mobile suit and anti-ship combat.

Funnels

One of the Jagd Doga’s more powerful features is its Newtype-use remote controlled weapons. The six funnels are stored on the two funnel pod shields, each funnel has a power rating of 10.6 MW, and can easily destroy mobile suits or nuclear missiles. They are the same as those used by the MSN-04 Sazabi, but cannot be reused due to a lack of recharge port on the mobile suit. Thus, once they ran out of power, they are discarded.

Behind the scenes

Yutaka Izubuchi was the original mechanical designer for Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack.

The name “Jagd Doga” combines the German word “Jagd” (meaning “hunt”) with “Doga”, referencing its relationship to the Geara Doga. This naming convention reflects the mobile suit’s role as a hunter-killer unit designed for Newtype pilots.
