Hilde Schbeiker

Hilde Schbeiker (ヒルデ・シュバイカー, *Hirude Shubaik

ā*) was a former OZ volunteer soldier who defected after meeting Gundam pilot Duo Maxwell during the Eve Wars. Born in AC 180 in Eastern Europe, she initially served as an OZ specialist at age 15 before leaving the organisation to operate a salvage yard on an L2 colony with Duo. In the Mars Century era, she married Duo and eventually became First Lady of the Mars Federation.

Biography

OZ volunteer and defection (AC 195)

In AC 195, at age 15, Hilde Schbeiker served as a volunteer soldier in OZ’s space army. She encountered Duo Maxwell when she heard the Gundam pilot criticizing the colonies for their involvement with OZ. Unaware of Duo’s true intentions to destroy OZ’s Lunar Base, Hilde encouraged him to become a volunteer as well.

Shortly afterwards, Hilde noticed Duo attempting to sneak aboard a shuttle transporting colony volunteers to the Lunar Base. Duo escaped the colony after stealing a Leo, but Hilde gave chase in a Leo of her own and eventually aided in his capture. Aboard a mobile suit shuttle, she interrogated Duo, but upon listening to him, she began to question OZ’s methods.

When Duo broke free and left the shuttle in his damaged Leo, Hilde pursued him again. However, this time she shot down a Taurus mobile doll that was attacking Duo and allowed him to enter the Lunar Base. This act marked her turning point—she could no longer support OZ’s methods after witnessing their use of autonomous weapons against humans.

Salvage yard operator (AC 195-196)

Hilde left OZ soon after her defection to live in an L2 colony. Duo eventually joined her, and the two lived together operating her salvage yard. This arrangement allowed Duo to gather supplies for his incomplete Deathscythe Hell whilst maintaining a civilian cover.

During this period, Hilde brought Duo’s Deathscythe Hell to him outside their colony to fight Trant Clark after the OZ officer had tracked Duo down and forced him to test the Wing Gundam Zero’s ZERO System. Her support proved crucial in allowing Duo to continue his activities whilst maintaining their cover as salvage operators.

Hilde and Duo continued living together until the colony rebel organisation White Fang began their takeover and attempted to recruit Duo. He refused and left the colony, concerned for Hilde’s safety as the conflict escalated.

Mission to Libra (AC 196)

Exactly one month after Duo’s departure, Hilde undertook a self-appointed mission to help the Gundam pilots. She snuck aboard the White Fang-controlled space battleship Libra to steal schematic data that would aid the pilots in their final confrontation with the organisation.

During her infiltration, she met and spoke with Relena Peacecraft before escaping in a Taurus. However, White Fang sent out the rebuilt Vayeate and Mercurius mobile dolls—fitted with combat data from Gundam pilots Trowa Barton and Heero Yuy—to pursue her.

Duo arrived to save her, destroying both mobile dolls. However, Hilde suffered numerous injuries during the pursuit and was last seen being wheeled into a medical room aboard the space battleship Peacemillion. Her willingness to risk her life to support the Gundam pilots demonstrated her complete commitment to their cause for peace.

Peacetime and Endless Waltz (AC 197)

After the Mariemaia Incident, Hilde was shown spending time with Duo in their home colony. In the OVA version, they worked together in their scrapyard, continuing the salvage business they had established. In the theatrical movie version, they were shown eating lunch together in a Chinese restaurant, suggesting a more relaxed relationship in peacetime.

Mars Century era (MC 0012-0023)

In MC-0012, Hilde and Duo separated, with Duo travelling to Mars. Sometime afterwards, Hilde followed, becoming a librarian in the Lanigreen Republic. During her time at the Martian National Library, she became an expert on nanotechnology—knowledge that would prove significant in later events.

Hilde reunited with Duo on Mars, and he moved in with her. After he proposed, the two married in MC-0015. However, Duo soon left again on his bounty-hunting travels. When he returned in MC-0016, Hilde had begun caring for children at a local church orphanage.

When the church’s priest left the establishment to Hilde and Duo, his substantial debt was also passed to them. Hilde bore the burden of the debt, and the financial strain caused her to demand a divorce from Duo. He signed the divorce papers and vanished again, though not before promising to help Hilde recover from her debts.

Sometime before Duo returned in MC-0017, his son Duo Maxwell II came into her care. It remained unclear whether he was born to her whilst Duo travelled the planet or if he was adopted by the orphanage. Hilde suggested she believed him to be a lovechild of one of Duo’s women, though Duo mused the child would have been born whilst he and Hilde were still together. In MC-0017, Father Maxwell brought Naina Peacecraft to the orphanage, placing her in Hilde’s care at Zechs Merquise’s request.

Whilst serving as a nun, Hilde continued researching nanotechnology in search of a cure for the PPP nanotech on Duo’s behalf. She inadvertently discovered a nano-hologram of Zechs Merquise created by the Noinheim Group. This discovery led to an attack on the orphanage, during which Hilde was believed killed. However, she later proved to have survived.

As her divorce never went through legally, Hilde became First Lady of the Mars Federation when Duo Maxwell was elected the 3rd President sometime in MC-0023, marking a dramatic change from her humble beginnings as an orphanage nun.

Personality

Hilde demonstrated strong principles and a willingness to question authority. When she first encountered Duo, his words about OZ’s methods made her reconsider her allegiance—showing intellectual independence unusual for a young volunteer soldier. Her decision to help Duo escape the Taurus mobile doll marked her complete rejection of OZ’s autonomous warfare approach.

She showed remarkable courage in her self-appointed mission to infiltrate Libra, risking her life without direct orders or support. Her practical nature was evident in her salvage yard operations, providing both a livelihood and cover for Duo’s Gundam-related activities.

In the Mars Century era, Hilde demonstrated dedication to helping others through her work at the orphanage, even when it brought financial hardship. Her continued research into nanotechnology whilst serving as a nun showed her commitment to finding solutions to complex problems, maintaining the intellectual curiosity that had first led her to question OZ’s methods.

Relationships

Duo Maxwell

Hilde’s relationship with Duo evolved from captor-prisoner to partners to spouses across multiple decades. Her initial encounter with him as an OZ volunteer led to her complete reevaluation of her beliefs. Living together on L2 whilst operating the salvage yard, they developed a partnership built on mutual trust and shared goals.

Though they married in MC-0015, their relationship faced challenges due to Duo’s frequent absences and financial struggles. Despite demanding divorce in MC-0016, the paperwork never completed, and they ultimately remained married. When Duo was elected Mars Federation President in MC-0023, Hilde became First Lady, suggesting their relationship endured despite its complications.

Duo Maxwell II

Whether biological son or adopted child, Duo Maxwell II came into Hilde’s care at the orphanage. She raised him whilst uncertain of his exact origins, showing her willingness to care for children regardless of their background. Her relationship with the younger Duo reflected her nurturing nature developed through her orphanage work.
