Rosamia Badam
Cyber Newtype pilot and member of the Titans who infiltrated the Argama crew during the Gryps Conflict.
Rosamia Badam was a Cyber Newtype pilot and Lieutenant in the Titans who served during the Gryps Conflict. A survivor of a colony drop during the One Year War, she was subjected to artificial enhancement at the Augusta Research Institute and became one of the Earth Federation Forces’ first Cyber Newtypes.
Biography
Early life and trauma
As a child during the One Year War, Rosamia witnessed a falling space colony, an event that left severe psychological trauma and a lasting fear of “the sky falling”. The colony drop killed her family and left her orphaned. After the war ended in UC 0080, the traumatised child was taken to the Earth Federation’s Augusta Newtype Labs where she became a test subject for the Cyber Newtype enhancement programme.
Augusta Research Institute
At the Augusta Research Institute, Rosamia underwent extensive physical and mental modifications as part of the Federation’s efforts to artificially create Newtypes. The enhancement process strengthened her physical body and heightened her reflexes, but also subjected her to psychological conditioning and memory manipulation. The scientists took advantage of her pre-existing trauma to make her more susceptible to mental programming.
During her time at the facility, Rosamia was given false memories of having a family, including a father, mother, little brother, and older brother. She carried a forged photograph depicting herself with two boys, one bearing a strong resemblance to Kamille Bidan. These implanted memories were designed to maintain psychological balance, but they also made her vulnerable to manipulation by her handlers.
Service with the Titans
Following her enhancement, Rosamia was enlisted into the Titans as a test pilot. She received the rank of Lieutenant and was assigned to pilot experimental mobile suits. Her first combat deployment came during the Gryps Conflict in UC 0087, when she was summoned to assist Buran Blutarch in attacking the AEUG/Karaba transport Audhumla over the United States.
Piloting the ORX-005 Gaplant, Rosamia engaged Kamille Bidan in his RX-178 Gundam Mk-II, Quattro Bajeena, and Katz Kobayashi. Despite giving the AEUG forces considerable difficulty, her Gaplant was badly damaged and she was forced to retreat. During the battle, she found herself unable to strike down Kamille, an inexplicable hesitation that would later prove significant.
Infiltration of the Argama
Following her first engagement, Rosamia was subjected to additional mental conditioning by Loren Nakamoto for a special infiltration mission. Her mind was reprogrammed to make her believe that Kamille Bidan was her older brother, and she was given the alias “Rosammy” to hide her true identity. This reprogramming resulted in her adopting a childlike and infantile personality.
Rosamia appeared on Side 3’s Colony 13, claiming to be Kamille’s sister. Although Kamille knew she was not truly his sister, he pitied her and brought her aboard the Argama. During her time on the ship, she was examined by Dr Hasan, whose tests revealed her status as a Cyber Newtype, prompting immediate concern from the crew.
Despite raising suspicions among the Argama’s crew, Rosamia managed to gain the affections of the war orphans Shinta and Qum due to her childlike demeanour. However, her original programming eventually reasserted itself, and with help from the children, she commandeered a RMS-108 Marasai and escaped from the ship, declaring Kamille her enemy.
Final encounters
Rosamia encountered Kamille once more while test piloting the NRX-055 Baund Doc. Despite recognising him as her brother again, her Titans conditioning proved too strong for Kamille to overcome. He convinced her to land on Colony 13 where they had a heart-to-heart conversation during which Kamille told her about Four Murasame and her fate. However, Gates Capa and Loren Nakamoto quickly used mind control waves to make Rosamia hostile again, nearly killing Kamille before Quattro Bajeena intervened.
For her final mission, Rosamia’s mind was reprogrammed once more to believe that Gates Capa was her brother, an attempt to provide her with a more stable psychological anchor. She was assigned to pilot the experimental MRX-010 Psycho Gundam Mk-II, but by this point her mental state had deteriorated significantly. The multiple conflicting implanted memories had caused her to experience a complete psychological breakdown.
During her final battle near the end of the Gryps Conflict, Rosamia engaged Kamille’s MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam while in an uncontrollable panic. Despite his efforts to save her, Kamille was forced to destroy the Psycho Gundam Mk-II to protect the Argama crew from her rampage. In her final moments, Rosamia reverted to a childlike state and said, “Brother, I found you!” before dying in the explosion.
Following her death, Rosamia’s spirit joined other deceased Newtypes in providing spiritual aid to Kamille during his final confrontation with Paptimus Scirocco.
Personality and traits
Having undergone Cyber Newtype modifications, Rosamia’s personality was deeply fractured, spiralling between innocent and kind to overconfident and brutal. Initially appearing to be a self-assured and capable pilot, she would occasionally break down and experience psychological delusions, particularly manifesting as terror at the thought of “the sky falling”—a direct result of her childhood trauma.
The repeated memory implantation and reprogramming by her Titans handlers severely damaged her psychological stability. When programmed to believe Kamille was her brother, she became childlike and infantile, seeking familial connection and comfort. However, these artificial personalities would conflict with her original conditioning, causing violent mood swings and unpredictable behaviour.
Rosamia’s fundamental nature was that of a lost child seeking the family she had lost during the One Year War. Her attachment to whoever she was programmed to believe was her “big brother” represented a desperate attempt to fill the emotional void left by her trauma. This made her both tragic and dangerous, as her controllers could manipulate these deep-seated needs for their own purposes.
Skills and abilities
As a Cyber Newtype, Rosamia possessed artificially enhanced physical abilities and heightened reflexes that made her an exceptional mobile suit pilot. Her body had been strengthened through biotechnological modifications, and she demonstrated considerable skill in operating complex experimental mobile suits including transformable units like the Gaplant and psycommu-equipped machines like the Psycho Gundam Mk-II.
However, unlike natural Newtypes, her enhanced abilities came at the cost of severe mental instability. The artificial conditioning process had left her vulnerable to psychological manipulation and prone to violent mood swings that could compromise her effectiveness in combat.
Relationships
Kamille Bidan
Rosamia’s relationship with Kamille Bidan was central to her story and the source of both her greatest happiness and deepest tragedy. When programmed to believe he was her older brother, she displayed genuine affection and sought the familial bond she had lost in childhood. Kamille, recognising her pain and artificial conditioning, showed her compassion despite knowing she was an enemy operative.
Their relationship represented the possibility of healing and redemption that was ultimately denied by the Titans’ manipulation and the demands of war. Even in her final moments, it was Kamille that Rosamia called out to, suggesting that beneath all the false memories and conditioning, she had formed a genuine emotional connection with him.
Gates Capa
Gates Capa served as both handler and surrogate brother figure to Rosamia during her later missions. Unlike the other Cyber Newtypes, Gates maintained relatively stable emotions, making him useful for controlling Rosamia’s erratic behaviour. When her conditioning began to fail, she was reprogrammed to believe Gates was her brother in an attempt to provide psychological stability.
However, this relationship was ultimately manipulative, with Gates functioning primarily as a tool for the Titans to maintain control over their unstable asset rather than providing genuine care or support.
Shinta and Qum
During her infiltration of the Argama, Rosamia formed a genuine bond with the war orphans Shinta and Qum. Her childlike personality when programmed as “Rosammy” resonated with the children, who accepted her without suspicion. Their innocent affection represented one of the few purely positive relationships in Rosamia’s tragic life, unmarred by military objectives or psychological manipulation.
Mobile suits
ORX-005 Gaplant
Rosamia’s first combat assignment was piloting the ORX-005 Gaplant, a transformable mobile suit developed at the Augusta Research Institute. The Gaplant’s transformation capability between mobile suit and sub-flight modes made it ideal for her enhanced reflexes and spatial awareness. During her engagement with AEUG forces over the United States, she demonstrated considerable skill with the unit despite being relatively inexperienced with its systems.
NRX-055 Baund Doc
Later in the Gryps Conflict, Rosamia was assigned to test pilot the NRX-055 Baund Doc, another transformable mobile suit with multiple configuration options. Her encounter with Kamille Bidan while piloting this unit marked a crucial moment where her artificial memories briefly overcame her Titans conditioning, allowing her to recognise him as her “brother” once more.
MRX-010 Psycho Gundam Mk-II
Rosamia’s final and most significant assignment was piloting the MRX-010 Psycho Gundam Mk-II, a massive psycommu-equipped mobile suit. By this point, her mental deterioration had reached critical levels, and she was barely able to control the powerful machine. The Psycho Gundam Mk-II amplified both her Newtype abilities and her psychological instability, making her incredibly dangerous but ultimately uncontrollable.
Behind the scenes
Rosamia Badam was voiced by Fujii Kayoko in the original Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam television series and by Asakawa Yuu in the compilation films A New Translation. In the English dub, she was voiced by Jennifer Bain.
The character was designed to explore the tragic consequences of artificial Newtype enhancement and the psychological toll of war on children. Her story parallels that of Four Murasame, another Cyber Newtype who suffered similar trauma and manipulation, highlighting the Earth Federation’s morally questionable research programmes.
In the original television series, Rosamia appears throughout the latter half of the conflict, with her story culminating in her death while piloting the Psycho Gundam Mk-II. However, in the compilation films A New Translation, her role is significantly reduced, with her story ending after the destruction of her Gaplant, though she still appears as a Newtype spirit in the final battle.
