MRX-010 Psycho Gundam Mk-II

The MRX-010 Psycho Gundam Mk-II was a prototype Newtype-use transformable mobile armor developed by the Murasame Research Institute for the Titans and later operated by Neo Zeon.

The “M” in the model code stood for Murasame, the “R” indicated it was a Federation model1 and the “X” designated it as an experimental mobile suit. The “010” in the model code denoted that it was the tenth design in the MRX series. The “Mk-II” suffix indicated it was the second iteration of the Psycho Gundam design.

An improved development over the original MRX-009 Psycho Gundam, the Mk-II was equipped with a psycommu and psycho-control chair to allow its Newtype or genetically engineered Cyber Newtype pilot to control this massive mobile weapon system with mere thoughts. Like the original, the Mk-II could also transform into a mobile fortress mode equipped with a Minovsky craft system for atmospheric flight, although its firepower was much more deadly than the MRX-009’s.

History

Despite the destruction of the MRX-009 Psycho Gundam, the Murasame Newtype Lab continued its research and created the even more powerful MRX-010 Psycho Gundam Mk-II. The mobile armor was first deployed during the late stages of the Gryps Conflict in UC 0088.

Piloted by the powerful yet unstable Cyber Newtype Rosamia Badam, the Psycho Gundam Mk-II was a much deadlier foe for MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam and its pilot Kamille Bidan than the original Psycho Gundam. Kamille managed to critically damage the Psycho Gundam Mk-II during a mission to stop Axis in the late stage of Gryps Conflict, killing its pilot in the process.

Almost a year later, in U.C. 0088, Neo Zeon forces retrieved the wreckage of the Psycho Gundam Mk-II and rebuilt it. During its transportation, it was briefly activated by the nearby presence of Newtype Elpeo Ple. It was then piloted by their own Cyber Newtype pilot, Ple Two, in their war against the AEUG.

Following a colony drop on the city of Dublin, the Mk-II was heavily damaged in a battle against Judau Ashta’s MSZ-010 ZZ Gundam. However, after a lengthy battle in the aftermath of the Dublin Colony Drop, it was finally destroyed by Judau Ashta in the MSZ-010 ΖΖ Gundam, but Ple Two survived by escaping in the detachable head unit. After abandoning the Mk-II, Ple Two switched to the equally massive NZ-000 Queen Mansa.

Design

An improvement over the original MRX-009 Psycho Gundam, the MRX-010 Psycho Gundam Mk-II was also equipped with a Psycommu and Psycho Control system to allow its Newtype or Cyber Newtype pilot to control this massive mobile weapon with mere thoughts. It also inherited its predecessor’s ability to transform into a “Mobile Fortress” mode as well as the Minovsky Craft system for atmospheric flight.

However the Psycho Gundam Mk-II was more energy efficiency and more deadly, it has a greater amount of weapons that have higher power ratings, despite having a fusion reactor that only produces little over half of what the Psycho Gundam was capable. The Mk-II’s power plant generated 19,760 kW compared to the original’s 33,600 kW, yet delivered superior performance through improved efficiency.

At 40.74 metres in overall height (39.98 metres to the head), the Psycho Gundam Mk-II maintained the massive scale of its predecessor whilst incorporating numerous improvements. The mobile armor featured a panoramic monitor and linear seat cockpit located in the head section, along with a psycho control chair for enhanced pilot interface.

One of the most significant design features was the detachable head unit, which could operate independently if the main body was destroyed. This provided an escape mechanism for the pilot and allowed for continued limited combat capability even after sustaining major damage.

The Mk-II was constructed from Gundarium alloy and featured improved sensors with a range of 16,230 metres, significantly superior to the original’s 10,200-metre range. Like its predecessor, the Psycho Gundam Mk-II was fitted with an I-Field barrier for protection against enemy beam attacks.

Armaments

Though armed with the same 3-barreled diffuse mega particle cannon in its chest and beam gun fingers, the Mk-II also mounted 20 smaller beam guns all over its body, giving it firepower capable of attacking targets in all directions. The Psycho Gundam Mk-II also featured several unique weapon systems not found on the original.

Mega beam cannons

One of its notable feature that made it stronger than the first variant was the 20 Mega Beam Cannons that located all around its body, with 6.3 Megawatts if power each, 3 of them on each of its shoulders and 4 on each of its legs with 2 pairs on its skirt armors and 1 on the front skirt armor. These weapons provided the Mk-II with omnidirectional firepower, capable of engaging multiple targets simultaneously from any angle.

Scattering mega particle cannons

Like the Psycho Gundam, the Psycho Gundam Mk-II was armed with three Scattering Mega Beam Cannons in its body. These weapons emit multiple energy beams that can easily destroy an enemy unit in one shot, providing devastating area-effect firepower.

Finger beam cannons

The fingers of the Psycho Gundam Mk-II each contain a beam cannon, for a total of ten beam cannons. This armament system, inherited from the original design, allowed for precision targeting whilst maintaining redundancy in case of damage.

Small mega beam cannons

Two small mega beam cannons are mounted in the center of the V-fin on the unit’s head. These weapons remained functional even when the head unit detached from the main body, providing defensive capability for the escape pod.

Wired psycommu beam swords

Its forearms also mounted large-bladed beam swords, and could be detached and directed at targets via a cable connection and through the control of the Mk-II’s psycommu system, giving the unit an all-range attack capability. Not only the ranged weapons but this time it also comes with a pair of wire-guided beam swords which uses the Psycommu System to control it via pilot’s mere thoughts and with the forearms still detachable like the older one, the swords had 1.7 Megawatts of power each.

Reflector bits

The Psycho Gundam Mk-II also carried a set of Reflector Bits, which were unarmed but were used to redirect its own beam weapons fire to targets that are out-of-sight, or to deflect and redirect incoming enemy beam weapons fire. The Psycho GUndam Mk-II also comes equipped with reflector bits, they act similar to the funnel weapon but instead of emitting beam attacks, it can reflect or redirect its own beam weapons to attack in another direction, creating an all-directional attack in both offensive and defensive way.

Shield

The shield is also still carried on to this variant and can be mounted on the lower sides and transformed into Mobile Fortress Mode. The shield provided protection against both ballistic and beam weapons whilst serving structural functions during transformation.

Behind the scenes

Katsuji Murakami was the original mechanical designer for the MRX-010 Psycho Gundam Mk-II. The design built upon the foundation established by the original Psycho Gundam whilst incorporating numerous improvements based on combat experience and technological advancement.

Gunpla

Bandai released the 1/300 scale Original MRX-010 Psycho Gundam Mk-II in 1986. In 2025, Bandai released the long-awaited 1/144 HGUC kit (kit #261), standing approximately 270mm tall and featuring full transformation capabilities between mobile suit and mobile fortress modes. The kit includes an Action Base 4, weapon display base, and an interchangeable half-destroyed head part to recreate key battle scenes.
