NRX-055 Baund-Doc

The NRX-055 Baund-Doc was a prototype Newtype-use transformable mobile armor developed by the Earth Federation Forces for the Titans.

The “NRX” in the model code indicated it was a Federation experimental Newtype-use mobile weapon, and the “055” denoted it was the fifty-fifth design in this experimental series. The name “Baund-Doc” is likely derived from the katakana for “Hound Dog”.

History

The NRX-055 Baund-Doc was developed at the Titans’ Augusta Newtype Laboratory as one of the strangest mobile weapons fielded during the Gryps War. The project aimed to create a transformable mobile armor that could leverage the abilities of Newtype and Cyber Newtype pilots through an integrated psycommu system.

Only three units were constructed, designated NRX-055-1 through NRX-055-3. Unit 1 was the prototype, and its cockpit was set up with two seats – one for the pilot, and another for an instructor/operator. The remaining units featured standard single-person cockpits and sported distinctive colour schemes.

The first unit was tested by Gates Capa, whilst Rosamia Badam piloted a pink and black unit. After Rosamia abandoned her unit, Jerid Messa took control of it despite his lack of Newtype abilities. All three units proved to be deadly foes for the AEUG, although none of the Baund-Docs survived the war.

Design

Despite its apparent size and bulk, the Baund-Doc’s half-egg-shaped mobile armor mode was fast and maneuverable, equally capable of offensive and defensive operations. The mobile armor could transform into a non-symmetrical mobile suit form, featuring an unusual asymmetrical design that set it apart from conventional mobile weapons.

The Baund-Doc was equipped with a sophisticated psycommu system that allowed Newtype pilots to interface directly with the machine’s operating systems. Although normal human pilots could operate this transformable mobile weapon, its true potential only came out in the hands of a genetically engineered Cyber Newtype or a natural Newtype.

The mobile armor’s unique movable frame allowed the mobile suit mode’s feet to become claws in mobile armor mode, providing additional melee capabilities and grappling attacks that were unusual for units of this size.

Armaments

The Baund-Doc’s standard weapons were a diffuse mega particle cannon for ranged attacks and various claw systems for melee combat.

Diffuse mega particle cannon

The diffuse mega particle cannon was mounted in the left arm in mobile suit mode and had a power rating of 16.4 MW. This weapon was capable of targeting multiple enemy units at once, making it highly effective against groups of mobile suits.

Beam rifle

The Baund-Doc carried a compact beam rifle that was smaller than standard beam rifles but maintained comparable firepower. The weapon could be used effectively in both mobile suit and mobile armor modes.

Beam saber

A melee combat armament that emits a beam blade from its grip. It is stored in the torso when not in use. The beam saber provided the Baund-Doc with close-range combat capabilities when engaging enemy mobile suits directly.

Arm claw

The Baund-Doc’s right arm has a large claw for use in melee combat. However, due to its structure, it cannot wield handheld weaponry. This design choice emphasised the unit’s unique combat approach.

Leg claws

The legs of the Baund-Doc can be used as claws in MA mode, and they are effective in restraining enemy units and hit-and-run attacks. This feature allowed the mobile armor to perform grappling manoeuvres that were unprecedented among mobile weapons of its era.

Behind the scenes

Makoto Kobayashi was the principal designer, with Kazumi Fujita handling cleanup duties. The Baund-Doc’s MA mode appears to be inspired by the MAM-07 Grublo, whilst the name is also loosely spelled similar to Bandock, the four-legged alien space fortress from Invincible Superman Zambot 3 which Yoshiyuki Tomino worked on seven years prior.
