Mirai Yashima

Mirai Yashima was an Earth Federation ensign who served as helmsman and second-in-command of the White Base during the One Year War. Born into the influential Yashima family, she became one of the most trusted members of the White Base crew and later married Captain Bright Noa, taking the name Mirai Noa.

Biography

Early life

Mirai was born in UC 0061 on Kyushu, Japan, Earth. She was the daughter of Shu Yashima, CEO of the Yashima Company and a prominent figure in the Earth Federation government. The Yashima family was well-established in Far East politics and had significant influence within the Federation hierarchy.

As a young woman, Mirai received training as a space glider pilot, skills that would prove invaluable during her military service. Her father had arranged for her to marry Cameron Bloom, a district attorney from Side 6, though Mirai had little enthusiasm for the engagement.

Tragedy struck the Yashima family when Shu died before the outbreak of the One Year War, leaving Mirai emotionally vulnerable and distrustful of others. Following her father’s death, she relocated to Side 7 for her safety.

One Year War

When Zeon forces attacked Side 7 in September UC 0079, Mirai found herself aboard the White Base along with other civilian refugees. Her prior experience as a space glider pilot made her the ideal choice to serve as the ship’s helmsman, a position she accepted under the command of Acting Captain Bright Noa.

Mirai quickly proved herself indispensable to the White Base’s operations. Her piloting skills and natural leadership abilities made her Bright’s most trusted advisor and de facto second-in-command. She also became a maternal figure to the young crew members, earning their respect and affection.

During the ship’s journey to Luna II, Mirai demonstrated exceptional tactical awareness, proposing a preemptive strike against Char Aznable’s pursuing forces whilst arranging for the safe transfer of civilian refugees. Her quick thinking and operational skills saved the ship on numerous occasions.

When the White Base reached Jaburo, Mirai was formally commissioned as an ensign in the Earth Federation Forces, officially recognising her contributions to the war effort. She participated in major operations including Operation Odessa, the defence of Jaburo, and the final assault on A Baoa Qu.

Relationships during the war

Mirai’s personal life became complicated during the White Base’s mission. When the ship docked at the neutral Side 6, she was reunited with her fiancé Cameron Bloom, who had fled there to avoid the war. Mirai was disgusted by what she perceived as Cameron’s cowardice and his failure to search for her personally after her father’s death. Though Cameron attempted to win her back by risking his life to escort the White Base to safety, Mirai ultimately rejected him.

Later, Mirai became romantically involved with Lieutenant Sleggar Law, a veteran pilot who joined the White Base crew at Jaburo. Sleggar initially pursued her aggressively but eventually came to respect her deeply. Before his final battle against Dozle Zabi’s Big Zam at the Battle of Solomon, Sleggar gave Mirai his mother’s ring, telling her she deserved better than someone like him. His death devastated both Mirai and Bright.

Throughout these trials, Mirai and Bright grew closer, forming both a professional partnership and a personal bond that would endure beyond the war.

Post-war life

After the One Year War ended, Mirai married Bright Noa and they had two children: Hathaway (their eldest son) and Cheimin (their daughter). The Noa family lived at the Federation’s Jaburo base, though their residence served as much to ensure Bright’s loyalty as to provide family quarters.

Gryps Conflict

During the Gryps Conflict in UC 0087, when Bright defected to the AEUG to fight against the authoritarian Titans, Mirai spirited their children away from Jaburo to prevent them being used as hostages. Whilst waiting for passage off Earth in Hong Kong, she encountered Amuro Ray and his companion Beltorchika Irma.

Mirai and her children were subsequently captured by Titans forces and used as leverage against Karaba, but were rescued through the combined efforts of Amuro and Kamille Bidan. During their captivity, Mirai shared with Kamille the story of Amuro’s relationship with Lalah Sune, explaining why Amuro hesitated to return to space combat.

She later recorded a video message for Bright with their children, which Hayato Kobayashi delivered to him aboard the Argama. The emotional reunion brought Bright to tears.

Second Neo Zeon War

During the Second Neo Zeon War in UC 0093, Mirai and Cheimin attempted to evacuate Earth and rejoin Bright, who was commanding Londo Bell. At a Hong Kong spaceport, unaware that Char’s asteroid drop was imminent, Mirai sacrificed her seat on the shuttle to ensure Hathaway’s escape. She promised him that she and Cheimin would follow on the next flight, but they were unable to leave and remained trapped on Earth.

At the war’s conclusion, Mirai and Cheimin witnessed the brilliant lights of the Axis Shock phenomenon from Hong Kong, marking the end of Char’s rebellion.

Personality and traits

Mirai was characterised by her strength, intelligence, and maternal instincts. Initially emotionally insecure following her father’s death, she gradually developed confidence through her service aboard the White Base. She possessed natural leadership abilities and tactical awareness that made her invaluable in combat situations.

Her relationships revealed a woman of strong principles who valued courage and integrity above social position. She rejected Cameron Bloom not merely for his avoidance of military service, but for his failure to take personal responsibility during the crisis. Conversely, she was attracted to both Sleggar Law and Bright Noa, men who demonstrated courage and dedication despite their different backgrounds.

Mirai served as a stabilising influence on the White Base crew, particularly the younger members who looked to her for guidance and emotional support. Her ability to remain calm under pressure and provide practical solutions made her indispensable to the ship’s operations.

Skills and abilities

Mirai possessed exceptional piloting skills, particularly in space navigation and helmsmanship. Her training as a space glider pilot translated perfectly to operating the White Base’s complex control systems. She demonstrated tactical awareness and strategic thinking that complemented Bright’s command decisions.

Like Amuro Ray and Sayla Mass, Mirai displayed Newtype abilities, including enhanced intuition and spatial awareness that contributed to her exceptional performance as helmsman. Her Newtype sensitivity allowed her to anticipate threats and navigate dangerous situations with uncanny accuracy.

Equipment

As helmsman of the White Base, Mirai operated the ship’s navigation and propulsion systems from the bridge. She occasionally piloted the Core Fighter during emergency situations and was qualified to operate various Federation vehicles and spacecraft.

Behind the scenes

Yasuhiko Yoshikazu designed Mirai’s character, with her name originally intended to be “Mirai A Land” during early development. The character underwent several name changes—from A Land to Eight Land to finally Yashima—before settling on her final designation.

Director Tomino Yoshiyuki initially envisioned Mirai as the White Base’s captain rather than helmsman, but this was changed during development to better suit the series’ focus on Bright’s growth as a leader.
