Master O (Wu Wanglong)

Wu Wanglong (呉 王龍, Wu Wanglong), better known by the alias Master O (老師O, Rōshi O), was the engineer and creator of the XXXG-01S Shenlong Gundam and Chang Wufei’s mentor. Of imposing stature and bald, the powerful and athletic Master O was an expert in martial arts—a skill he brought to the mobile suits he created. Specializing in mobile suit drive technology, Master O stood out among his fellow Gundam Scientists, being in much better physical shape and preferring action to words due to his martial arts ability. He died on 24 December AC 195 alongside the other scientists when they sacrificed themselves to prevent Libra from crashing into Earth.

Personality

Master O differed significantly from the other Gundam Scientists. His martial arts background made him prefer action to words, and his athletic build contrasted with the generally frail appearance of his colleagues. Despite this, he was no less committed to the cause than the others.

Controversially, Master O was the only one of the five scientists to support the original plan of Operation Meteor, showing less regard for civilian casualties than his colleagues. This put him at odds with the other scientists and created a rift between him and Chang Wufei, who refused to execute the genocidal plan despite Master O’s wishes—particularly because Wufei’s home colony was intended for the drop.

Biography

Tallgeese project and Gundam development

Master O was one of the scientists who designed the Tallgeese but abandoned completing it after becoming disillusioned with OZ actions. They separated to different colonies before the Alliance shut off travel and communications between individual colonies. They separately constructed the Gundams out of Gundanium alloy for retaliation against OZ.

Chang Wufei’s training (AC 194)

Master O trained Chang Wufei to be Shenlong’s pilot. During an assault on Colony A-0206 led by the Alliance, Wufei stole Master O’s incomplete Gundam to chase after his wife-to-be Meilan Long in the Tallgeese. Meilan sacrificed herself to protect Wufei from a self-destructing Leo. To avenge her death, Wufei decided to continue Meilan’s fight for justice by becoming a Gundam pilot, referring to the Gundam as “Nataku” in her honour.

Unlike the other Gundam engineers, Master O wanted his young ward to follow Operation Meteor as originally planned, disregarding Meilan’s death and the planned drop of Colony A-0206. This led to a rift between Wufei and Master O. Nonetheless, Wufei refused to execute the plan because his home colony was intended for the drop.

Capture and forced labour

Master O was eventually tracked down by OZ and captured along with his fellow scientists. Commissioned by Lady Une to create mobile suits more powerful than the Gundams, the scientists together created the Mercurius and Vayeate.

However, in secret, the scientists were also reconstructing Deathscythe and Shenlong. When Duo Maxwell infiltrated the lunar base, the scientists promised the Gundams would be complete in a month. To maintain their cover, Duo had to be captured—Master O beat him up for appearances.

When Chief Engineer Tubarov Bilmon cut off the air supply in both the pilots’ and scientists’ cells, intending to suffocate them, Lady Une returned just in time to free them.

Final sacrifice

The scientists were eventually captured by White Fang, who had them complete the captured OZ battleship Libra. However, the scientists ensured the main cannon could not fire consecutively and had to be repaired after each shot.

During the final battle, the scientists were found by Duo. They asked him to bring them to Peacemillion, which had crashed into Libra’s main cannon, where they would hot-wire its engines to push the battleship away from Earth. They did not care if they died if it meant atoning for their sins. Once aboard Peacemillion, they began their work, confronted by Quinze Quarante who berated them for changing Operation Meteor’s objective. The scientists set off the explosion, killing themselves and Quinze whilst starting Peacemillion’s engines.
