Gulltoppr

The Gulltoppr was a heavily modified Chivvay-class cruiser operated by the Republic of Zeon in UC 0097 during the Phoenix Hunt incident. The vessel served as the flagship for a group of Republic of Zeon soldiers led by Zoltan Akkanen, who disguised themselves as remnants of the Sleeves.

History

The Gulltoppr was extensively modified from a standard Chivvay-class heavy cruiser to serve the Republic of Zeon’s covert operations in UC 0097. The modifications included new engines, an additional hangar module, a mobile suit launch catapult, and a large cage structure designed to transport the massive NZ-999 II Neo Zeong mobile armor.

Phoenix Hunt Incident

In UC 0097, the Gulltoppr was deployed under the command of Zoltan Akkanen as part of a covert operation to capture the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 03 Phenex. The crew posed as remnants of the disbanded Sleeves faction, though they were actually operating under the authority of the Republic of Zeon and Minister Monaghan Bakharo.

The vessel transported Zoltan’s MSN-06S-2 Sinanju Stein and several AMS-129 Geara Zulu units, including the AMS-129 Geara Zulu (Guards Type) and Ellic Yugo’s custom unit. The ship’s most significant cargo was the massive II Neo Zeong mobile armor, carried in a specially constructed external cage.

Battle at Helium-3 Storage Base

During the climactic battle at a Helium-3 storage facility, the Gulltoppr utilised the gas storage tanks as cover whilst supporting Zoltan’s assault. The vessel found itself engaged by the Earth Federation Forces flagship General Revil, a Dogosse Giar-class battleship.

When Zoltan launched in the II Neo Zeong and began his destructive rampage, Captain Maseki Danbaev of the General Revil made the tactical decision to fire upon the Helium-3 storage tanks. The resulting explosion created a massive chain reaction that engulfed the Gulltoppr, destroying the vessel and its crew.

Design

The Gulltoppr featured significant modifications from the standard Chivvay-class design to accommodate its specialised mission requirements. The most notable addition was an external cage structure mounted beneath the hull, specifically designed to transport the enormous II Neo Zeong mobile armor.

Modifications

The Republic of Zeon engineers equipped the vessel with new propulsion systems to handle the additional mass and structural stress of carrying the II Neo Zeong. An extra hangar module was added to increase the ship’s mobile suit complement, along with a dedicated mobile suit launch catapult to improve deployment efficiency.

Unlike the standard Chivvay-class configuration, which typically mounted eighteen twin-barrel anti-aircraft guns, the Gulltoppr was equipped with sixteen such weapons—eight on each side of the vessel, with two mounted forward and six positioned amidships.

Armaments

The Gulltoppr retained the basic armament layout of the Chivvay-class, featuring twin-barrel machine guns used primarily for anti-air and mobile suit defence. However, the vessel relied heavily on its mobile suit complement for combat effectiveness rather than ship-to-ship engagement.

Mobile suit complement

The vessel carried multiple mobile suits, including:

Known commanders

  • Zoltan Akkanen (commanding officer)
  • Ellic Yugo (mobile suit pilot and briefing officer)

Behind the scenes

The Gulltoppr was designed for Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative by Hajime Katoki and Seiichi Nakatani. The vessel’s design represents a practical modification of the classic Chivvay-class to accommodate the story’s requirements for transporting the massive II Neo Zeong.

The name “Gulltoppr” comes from Norse mythology, specifically referring to one of Odin’s horses mentioned in the Prose Edda. This naming convention follows the pattern established by other vessels in the Gundam Unicorn and Narrative productions, which often drew from mythological sources.
