The AMS-129 Geara Zulu (Ellic Yugo Use) was a custom mobile suit developed by Anaheim Electronics for Ellic Hugo of the Republic of Zeon.

The “AMS” model code indicated it was an Anaheim mass production model, with “129” denoting the model number in the development sequence. The “(Ellic Yugo Use)” designation indicated it was a personal custom machine, though it was also known as the “Ellic Custom”.

History

The AMS-129 Geara Zulu (Ellic Yugo Use) was a custom mobile suit piloted by Ellic Hugo of the Republic of Zeon during Operation Phoenix Hunt in UC 0097. Ellic Hugo was secretly working as an operative for Republic of Zeon Foreign Minister Monaghan Bakharov whilst monitoring Zoltan Akkanen during the operation to capture the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 03 Phenex.

The mobile suit was part of a disguised Republic of Zeon mobile suit team that posed as remnants of the Sleeves during the operation. The Republic of Zeon acquired several Geara Zulu (Guards Type) units and deployed them as part of this covert mission. Ellic’s Geara Zulu was sent to the Side 6 colony of Metis, together with other AMS-129 Geara Zulu (Guards Type) units and the MSN-06S-2 Sinanju Stein, to search for the Phenex.

In the colony, they engaged the Earth Federation Forces’ Shezarr Unit, who were there for the same purpose. The disguised Republic of Zeon mobile suit team later retreated following the sudden appearance of the Phenex.

After the incident at Metis, Ellic was contacted by Monaghan, who was angered by Zoltan’s incompetence during the colony battle. Monaghan decided to “close up shop” and blamed the incident on the remnants of the Sleeves. He also ordered her to leave the Gulltoppr. Unfortunately, the conversation was overheard by Zoltan, who was not pleased with such treachery. Unable to come up with an explanation, Ellic drew her pistol on Zoltan, but he outdrew her and shot her in the forehead, killing her.

After Ellic’s death, her Geara Zulu was subsequently piloted by Birgitte Knudsen.

Design

A modified version of the Geara Zulu (Guards Type), Ellic’s custom machine featured several distinctive modifications that set it apart from the standard Guards Type. The head was changed to one with a blade antenna, signifying its commander status. Some of its armour shape and design were altered, and the machine was painted in Ellic’s personal colours.

The backpack was replaced with one from the AMS-119 Geara Doga Heavy Armed Type, but the backpack’s propellant tanks, stabiliser, and Lange Bruno Gun were omitted. Instead, it was possible to store the compact beam machine gun and beam naginata in the surplus space created by removing these components.

Although it belonged to the Republic of Zeon, it was engraved with the marks of the Sleeves for disguise during the covert operation. The marking on the chest was a unique design of this machine, distinguishing it from other Sleeves mobile suits.

The mobile suit had a standard cockpit in its torso with a panoramic monitor and linear seat. The modifications to the backpack allowed for improved storage and deployment of the mobile suit’s specialised weaponry whilst maintaining the enhanced performance characteristics of the Guards Type base unit.

Armaments

Ellic’s Geara Zulu was equipped with a unique combination of weapons that reflected both its covert mission requirements and Ellic’s personal combat preferences.

Beam naginata

The beam naginata served as the mobile suit’s primary melee weapon. This polearm-type weapon provided Ellic with extended reach in close combat situations whilst maintaining the cutting power of beam technology. The weapon could be stored in the modified backpack when not in use.

The beam naginata was similar to weapons used by other mobile suits such as the AMX-009 Dreissen, providing Ellic with familiar handling characteristics whilst offering superior performance compared to traditional beam sabers.

Beam machine gun

The standard beam machine gun used by Geara Zulu variants was retained as one of Ellic’s primary ranged weapons. It rapid fired pellet-shaped beams and its firing and focusing rates were consistent with the standards at the time. By adjusting the irradiation time, the weapon could also function as a beam rifle.

The magazine (E-pac) doubled as a foregrip, and had a banana shape, increasing the number of ammunition. The beam machine gun resembled the WWII era StG 44 assault rifle, continuing the Geara Zulu line’s inspiration from German military equipment.

Compact beam machine gun

A unique weapon featured on Ellic’s custom machine, the compact beam machine gun provided additional firepower in a more manageable package. This weapon could be stored in the modified backpack alongside the beam naginata, allowing Ellic to carry multiple ranged options without compromising mobility.

The compact beam machine gun resembled the TEC-9 pistol, distinguishing it from the larger standard beam machine gun whilst providing effective close-range firepower during covert operations.

Behind the scenes

Katoki Hajime was among the mechanical designers for Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative. The design combined elements from both the Geara Zulu Guards Type and the AMS-119 Geara Doga Heavy Armed Type backpack, creating a unique hybrid configuration.

The character name “Ellic Hugo” was sometimes romanised as “Ellic Yugo” in different sources, though “Hugo” appears to be the more common romanisation used in official materials.
