Girard Spriggan

Girard Spriggan (ジラード・スプリガン, Jirādo Supurigan), formerly known as Reina Spriggan, was a Vagan pilot in Mobile Suit Gundam AGE who served under Zeheart Galette. Her complex identity — torn between her true self and her Vagan conditioning — made her one of the most compelling characters in the series’ second generation.

Biography

Original identity

Before becoming Girard Spriggan, the character was known as Reina Spriggan, a civilian who was subjected to Vagan’s mind-altering processes. The transformation from Reina to Girard was part of Vagan’s broader strategy to infiltrate and undermine the Earth Federation from within.

This forced transformation — the erasure of one identity and the imposition of another — became a powerful metaphor for the dehumanising effects of war and the way in which ideology can overwrite individual identity.

Service under Zeheart

As Girard Spriggan, she served as a subordinate of Zeheart Galette, one of Vagan’s most capable commanders. Zeheart recognised her abilities as a pilot and used her skills in operations against the Earth Federation and the assault ship Diva.

Girard’s loyalty to Zeheart was complex. While she was nominally his subordinate, her underlying identity as Reina created an internal conflict that occasionally surfaced during critical moments. This tension between her imposed Vagan identity and her suppressed true self made her an unpredictable and intriguing character.

Interaction with Asemu

Girard’s interactions with Asemu Asuno, the second generation Gundam pilot, were pivotal to her character arc. Through her encounters with Asemu, fragments of her original identity as Reina began to resurface, forcing her to confront the question of who she truly was.

This internal struggle mirrored the broader theme of the series’ second generation — the search for identity and purpose in a world shaped by decades of inherited conflict. Asemu, who was himself struggling to find his own path separate from his father Flit Asuno’s legacy, provided a mirror for Girard’s own journey of self-discovery.

Personality & traits

Girard was a complex character whose personality was shaped by the tension between her imposed Vagan identity and her suppressed true self. As Girard, she was disciplined, capable, and loyal to Vagan’s cause. But beneath this facade, the remnants of Reina’s personality persisted, creating a volatile internal conflict.

Her relationship with Zeheart Galette was characterised by professional respect and underlying tension. Zeheart saw her as a valuable asset, but he was also aware of the instability created by her dual identity.
