Fa Yuiry

Fa Yuiry was a civilian who became a mobile suit pilot for the Anti-Earth Union Group during the Gryps Conflict. She was the next-door neighbour and childhood friend of Kamille Bidan, serving as his emotional anchor throughout the conflict. Fa later devoted herself to caring for Kamille after he suffered psychological damage during his final battle with Paptimus Scirocco.

Biography

Early life

Fa was born in UC 0070 and lived as a civilian on the space colony Green Noa 1 (later renamed Gryps) with her parents. She lived next door to Kamille Bidan and served as an emotional caretaker for him due to his dysfunctional family situation, much as Fraw Bow had done for Amuro Ray during the One Year War. Fa harboured strong romantic feelings for Kamille, which were reciprocated, though Kamille was often oblivious to her emotions during their childhood years.

Gryps Conflict

When the Gryps Conflict began in UC 0087, Fa’s life was dramatically altered by Kamille’s involvement with the AEUG. After Kamille helped Quattro Bajeena steal the prototype RX-178 Gundam Mk-II units from the Titans, Bask Om arrested Fa’s parents due to their association with Kamille. Fa escaped with the help of Bright Noa aboard the civilian shuttle Temptation, which was later rescued by the AEUG assault cruiser Argama.

Reunited with Kamille aboard the Argama, Fa decided to join the AEUG cause. She underwent pilot training and was assigned to pilot the MSA-005 Methuss, often rotating duties with Reccoa Londe. Despite her limited piloting skills, Fa provided valuable support in combat situations, though her mobile suit was frequently damaged during battles. The Methuss proved easy to repair, allowing it to return to service quickly.

During her time aboard the Argama, Fa also became a surrogate mother to the war orphans Shinta and Qum, whom Quattro Bajeena brought to the ship after his mission to Dakar. This mirrored Fraw Bow’s adoption of Katz, Letz, and Kikka during the One Year War.

On one notable occasion, Fa and Katz Kobayashi worked together to save Kamille when he was cornered by Jerid Messa and Mouar Pharaoh, though her Methuss was damaged by Jerid in the process. She also witnessed Apolly Bay sacrifice his life taking a shot meant for her, an event that deeply affected the entire Argama crew.

Fa managed to survive the entire Gryps Conflict, becoming the Argama’s only remaining active combat pilot by the end of the war. During the final battle at Gryps 2, she recovered Kamille, the badly damaged MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam, and Emma Sheen’s Gundam Mk-II after Paptimus Scirocco’s defeat.

First Neo Zeon War

Following Kamille’s psychological breakdown after his final confrontation with Scirocco, Fa devoted herself to his care. During the early stages of the First Neo Zeon War, she initially continued her duties as an active member aboard the Argama. However, after her Methuss was disabled in combat while saving Judau Ashta from Mashymre Cello’s AMS-119S Geara Doga Kai, Fa chose to retire from active service to care for Kamille.

She left the Argama when it departed Shangri-La and remained there with Kamille. Her dedication to Kamille was so notable that even Mashymre Cello, under Haman Karn’s influence, described her as “Lady Angel.”

Fa later reappeared working as a nurse in Dublin while continuing to care for the mentally incapacitated Kamille. When the Argama crew visited Dublin seeking psychiatric assessment for Elpeo Ple, Fa helped rescue Judau and Bright from a burning basement during a Neo Zeon attack on the Federation building.

Post-war life

In the epilogue of the First Neo Zeon War, Kamille recovered his mental faculties, and he and Fa were last seen running together along a beach. By UC 0095, Fa had married Kamille and they were living together. During an encounter with Kikka Kobayashi at the lunar city Von Braun, Fa delivered a message from her husband regarding investigative leads.

Moon Crisis

In UC 0099, both Fa and Kamille made a brief appearance in the manga Mobile Suit Gundam in UC 0099: Moon Crisis. Kamille was working as a doctor at Von Braun with Fa serving as a nurse beside him. When Kamille sensed pressure from upcoming conflicts during the Moon Crisis events, Fa asked if he wanted to evacuate the city. When he declined, stating there would be many casualties needing medical care, Fa turned to prepare medical supplies.

Personality & traits

Fa was characterised by her nurturing nature and unwavering devotion to those she cared about. She served as an emotional anchor for Kamille throughout their relationship, often trying to keep him grounded despite his volatile temperament. Her protective instincts extended beyond Kamille to include the war orphans Shinta and Qum, whom she treated as her own children.

Throughout the series, Fa and Kamille quarrelled frequently, to the point where the Argama crew referred to their arguing as their “hobby.” However, Fa became notably jealous whenever Kamille showed interest in other women, particularly Four Murasame. Despite these tensions, her feelings for Kamille remained constant and strong.

Fa demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability, transitioning from civilian life to become a capable mobile suit pilot despite having no prior military experience. Her determination to contribute to the AEUG cause while simultaneously caring for others showcased her strength of character.

Skills & abilities

As a mobile suit pilot, Fa’s skills were admittedly limited compared to veteran pilots. However, she proved effective in support roles, providing covering fire and assistance to more experienced pilots. Her quick learning ability allowed her to master the MSA-005 Methuss sufficiently to survive the entire Gryps Conflict.

Her medical knowledge, demonstrated during her work as a nurse in Dublin and later at Von Braun, proved valuable both during wartime and in civilian life. Fa’s natural caregiving abilities made her an excellent surrogate mother to war orphans and an ideal companion for Kamille during his recovery.

Relationships

Kamille Bidan

Fa’s relationship with Kamille Bidan formed the central emotional core of her character. As childhood neighbours and friends, their relationship evolved from platonic companionship to romantic love, though Kamille often remained oblivious to Fa’s feelings during their youth. Throughout the Gryps Conflict, Fa served as Kamille’s emotional support system, helping to ground him during his most volatile moments.

Their relationship was tested when Kamille developed feelings for Four Murasame, causing Fa considerable emotional pain. However, her devotion never wavered, and she ultimately dedicated herself to Kamille’s care after his psychological breakdown. Their relationship culminated in marriage, representing one of the few happy endings in the often tragic Universal Century timeline.

Shinta and Qum

Fa served as a surrogate mother to the war orphans Shinta and Qum after they were brought aboard the Argama. Her natural maternal instincts and caring nature made her ideal for this role, providing stability and affection to the children during the chaos of war. This relationship paralleled Fraw Bow’s adoption of children during the One Year War.

Mecha

MSA-005 Methuss

Fa’s primary mobile suit was the MSA-005 Methuss, Anaheim Electronics’ first transformable mobile suit prototype. Despite being designed as a testbed for transformation systems that would later be used in the MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam, the Methuss proved capable in combat situations.

The mobile suit featured two operational modes: a mobile suit configuration for close combat and a mobile armor configuration optimised for speed and agility. However, the mobile suit mode suffered from structural weaknesses, particularly in the exposed cylinder frame connecting the pelvis to the upper body, making it vulnerable in close combat situations.

Fa’s Methuss was frequently damaged during combat operations due to her limited piloting experience and the mobile suit’s structural vulnerabilities. Fortunately, the Methuss was designed for easy repair, allowing it to return to service quickly. The mobile suit was equipped with beam guns mounted on the forearms and six beam sabers stored in the legs, providing adequate armament for its support role.

Behind the scenes

Fa Yuiry was designed as the Zeta Gundam equivalent of Fraw Bow from the original Mobile Suit Gundam, serving a similar role as the caring female character who supports the protagonist emotionally. Series creator Yoshiyuki Tomino intended for Fa to represent the civilian cost of war and the importance of human connections during times of conflict.

In the novelisation of Zeta Gundam and the initial series draft, Fa’s name was revealed to be written in Chinese as Hua Yuanli (花園麗), though this detail was not included in the final anime version.

For the Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation film trilogy, Tomino revised Fa and Kamille’s fate to be more optimistic. Instead of Kamille suffering psychological damage from Scirocco’s attack, the films end with Kamille and Fa embracing, suggesting a happier conclusion to their story. However, this alternate ending is considered separate from the main Universal Century timeline as it contradicts events in Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ.

Voice actors

Fa Yuiry was originally voiced by Miyuki Matsuoka in Japanese for both Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam and Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ. For the English dub of Zeta Gundam, she was voiced by Angie Beers.

In the A New Translation film trilogy, Satomi Arai took over the Japanese voice role, marking a notable change that sparked some controversy among fans. Arai continued to voice Fa in subsequent Gundam games and media appearances.
