Anew Returner (アニュー・リターナー, Anyū Ritānā) was an Innovade who infiltrated Celestial Being in Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Second Season. She served as the Ptolemaios’ helmsman, systems engineer, and medical staff whilst secretly spying for Ribbons Almark and the Innovators. She developed a genuine romantic relationship with Lyle Dylandy (the second Lockon Stratos), making her eventual exposure and death a tragic turning point for both him and the crew.
Biography
Infiltration
Anew was created by Ribbons Almark as a sleeper agent, designed with female anatomy and a distinct personality to blend into Celestial Being. She was recommended to the organisation by Wang Liu Mei and brought expertise in space engineering, mobile suit engineering, and regenerative medicine. Aboard the Ptolemaios she performed her duties reliably, earning the trust of the crew whilst passing information to the Innovators.
Relationship with Lyle Dylandy
Anew and Lyle Dylandy grew close and began a romantic relationship. Lyle was unaware of her true nature; Anew herself appeared to develop genuine feelings for him, which complicated her role as a spy and made her a tragic figure when her identity was revealed.
Exposure and death
When Regene Regetta revealed that Anew was an Innovade, she was ordered to eliminate Lyle. She attempted to carry out the order, and Lyle was forced to kill her in self-defence during the confrontation. Her death deeply affected Lyle and the rest of the Ptolemaios crew.
Personality and traits
Anew was portrayed as quiet and polite, which both served her cover and acted as an emotional barrier. Despite her role as a spy, she is often remembered as a tragic character whose loyalty to Ribbons conflicted with her feelings for Lyle and her life aboard the Ptolemaios.
