AMS-119 Geara Doga (Heavy Armed Type)
Heavy weapons mobile suit developed by Anaheim Electronics.
The AMS-119 Geara Doga (Heavy Armed Type) was a heavy weapons mobile suit developed by Anaheim Electronics as a variant of the standard AMS-119 Geara Doga.
The “AMS” model code indicated it was an Anaheim mass production model, with “119” denoting the model number in the development sequence. The “Heavy Armed Type” designation indicated its specialisation for heavy weapons support.
History
The AMS-119 Geara Doga was the main mobile suit used by Char Aznable’s Neo Zeon forces during the Second Neo Zeon War in UC 0093. One Geara Doga variation was the Heavy Armed Type, which replaced the standard backpack with a heavy armament backpack that featured two propellant tanks. The tanks allowed for longer operating time, and the backpack powered the long-range, shell-firing Lange Bruno gun.
The Heavy Armed Type’s concept was carried forward to the AMS-129 Geara Zulu, the primary mobile suit used by the Neo Zeon during the Laplace Incident of UC 0096. However, that version of the Lange Bruno was upgraded to a beam weapon. The original Geara Doga (Heavy Armed Type) was still fielded in combat alongside the newer Geara Zulu.
Despite having a new mass production mobile suit, the AMS-129 Geara Zulu, the Neo Zeon remnant group The Sleeves still operated several Geara Doga Heavy Weapons Types. These machines were painted in a new colour scheme and given the distinctive markings featured on many of the mobile suits used by the Sleeves.
Design
A heavy weapon variant of the AMS-119 Geara Doga, the AMS-119 Geara Doga Heavy Armed Type was outfitted with a heavy armament backpack in place of the normal backpack. This new backpack had two large propellant tanks for increased operational time, a Lange Bruno Gun for long-range support purposes, and enhanced propulsion system to compensate for the added weight.
Other than these changes, the Geara Doga Heavy Armed Type was the same as the standard Geara Doga. The enhanced backpack significantly increased the mobile suit’s operational endurance whilst providing it with formidable long-range firepower capabilities.
The Heavy Armed Type had an ultracompact Minovsky power plant that generated an output of 1,870 kW. The enhanced propulsion system featured rocket thrusters with a total output of 75,200 kg, distributed across three 16,400 kg thrusters and two 13,000 kg thrusters, plus 15 vernier thrusters and apogee motors.
The mobile suit had a standard cockpit in its torso with a panoramic monitor and linear seat. Its standard sensors gave it a detection range of up to 16,400 metres. The heavy armament backpack featured hardpoints for mounting the two propellant tanks that extended operational time.
Armaments
The Geara Doga Heavy Armed Type’s standard weapons were focused on long-range engagement, with the Lange Bruno gun serving as its primary armament.
20cm Lange Bruno gun
A large gun mounted onto the Heavy Armed Type’s backpack, it was designed for long-range support purposes. The Lange Bruno gun fired solid projectiles rather than beam energy, making it effective against targets at extreme range where beam diffusion might reduce effectiveness.
The weapon required the additional power and propellant capacity provided by the heavy armament backpack to operate effectively. The Lange Bruno gun’s concept would later be refined into the beam-based Lange Bruno Gun Plus used by later Geara Zulu variants.
Option shield
Like the standard Geara Doga, the Geara Doga Heavy Armed Type could use a forearm-mounted shield for defence. This shield featured four grenade launchers, providing the mobile suit with additional tactical options beyond its primary long-range role.
The option shield also mounts a pair of small, two-tubed, multi-launchers that could fire grenades or act as smoke dischargers, enhancing the mobile suit’s defensive capabilities.
Mega beam cannon
The left arm of the Geara Doga Heavy Armed Type could be replaced with a powerful beam weapon known as mega beam cannon, providing the mobile suit with additional close-range firepower when the tactical situation required it.
Beam sword-axe
Like the standard Geara Doga, the Geara Doga Heavy Armed Type could carry a beam sword-axe for close combat. It had two beam emitters, allowing it to produce beam blades in the shape of a typical beam saber, pick, or axe. The beam sword-axe was mounted on the rear skirt armour when not in use.
Beam machine gun
Like the standard Geara Doga, the Geara Doga Heavy Armed Type could use one of two different beam machine guns. Each was powered by a replaceable e-pac, with two spare e-pacs stored in the suit’s side armour. One of the beam machine guns could be optionally equipped with a grenade launcher, carrying a single grenade, under the barrel.
Behind the scenes
Mika Akitaka was the original mechanical designer for the CCA-MSV version.
The Geara Doga Heavy Armed Type’s “Lange Bruno” gun appeared to be named after the 28 cm SK L/40 “Bruno”, a World War II German railroad gun, continuing the Zeon tradition of drawing inspiration from German military equipment.
A similar set-up was later used by the AMS-129 Geara Zulu (Angelo Sauper Use), though with significant technological improvements.
